Probably opening a can of worms here, but....

I wonder how many Korean-Americans (is there such a thing, probably) will root for Korea? And why?

When the US plays at home against Mexico you always see many more Mexican fans in the stands. Why do they keep their allegiance to their Soccer team and fly the Mexican flags when they now live in the US. (As an analogy, is this the same as living in Texas and being a Denver Broncos Fan?)

I'm Polish, by descent, but I definitely won't be rooting for Poland when they play the US on Friday.

We win nothing?

Seri Pak just won a major LPGA tournament. We got quite a lot of gold medals from Summer/Winter Olympics and all sorts of other major sports events. Korea is known to be a strong competitor in many sports. Soccer happened to be one of our weaker ones but it looks like that is about to gradually change.

So what are you talking about?

Soccer sux. I hope the USA gets it's ass kicked. i really don't want that sport being popular over here.

Its amazing how much people who hate football (soccer, whatever) go out of their way to bash it. You'd think they would just ignore it. But nope, they have to go all out and bash it like crazy.

They are similar to typical religion bashers and Intel/AMD zealots. Ignoring them is the best cure. Kinda annoying to scroll my mouse wheel though.

You sir, are an assbucket. If you don't like soccer, don't post in this thread.

But on topic, go USA. I say Obrien will score again tonight.

IMO, a lot of them will. Most Korean immigrants (anywhere) are first or second generations, and tend to be very nationalistic. Generally, they are more likely to value their ethnic roots than their current citizenship.

I was born in Korea but moved to Argentina when I was 8 and spent my elementary school years there. Now I live in Canada. I cheer Argentina because I love their soccer team and partly because of my childhood background. If Argentina plays against Korea, I'll likely cheer for Argentina because they are my futbol team of choice.

I guess that it comes down to how you interpret things. Some people associate soccer with politics or their national pride, and they have every right to do so. I prefer to treat this as a source of entertainment and enjoy watching my favourite teams play. Some people choose their favourite teams based on their ethnic background, or from combinations of many reasons.

Is this on ABC or ESPN? If it's on ABC, I might watch it, but I don't get ESPN 🙁

ESPN2 @ 2:25am Eastern Time (Live)
ESPN2 @ 2:00pm Eastern Time (Replay)
ESPN Classic @ 1:00pm Eastern Time on Tuesday

Oh well. Looks like I'll be getting some sleep after all. It's just too bad that ABC has to show their quality 2 AM shows instead of the US game.

Well I hope they know better, although I did hear that anti-Ohno sentiments are still quite strong.

It will be a good game but the U.S. will dominate the first half. Korea will be more controlling in the second half but it will be too late then. Look for the U.S. to win by two goals.

I don't know about USA winning, but I do agree that they will come out strong in the beginning. They have a lot of energy and really want to win.

I would bet my life that the U.S. will win...

changed that to bet and will.

BTW my cousin is cheering for the U.S. and he is Korean American.

I'm not a huge fan of soccer, but I do enjoy watching it somewhat. I'll probably be awake when the game starts, so I may watch some of it, but I'll probably get tired and fall asleep before it's over. About how long does it actually take to play the 90 minutes of soccer?

No more than 100 minutes of actual gameplay, usually. It's not like basketball where the last 5 minutes translate into 2 hours. 🙂

If you mean EDT, yeah. It should be over by then.

It'll be over by 4:20 EDT or so.

Halftime is another 15 minutes, so maybe 115 minutes max for the whole thing.

next scheduled game is 4:55 AM EST on ESPN... Tunisia vs. Belgium.. so the game will definitely be over by then.. but this is soccer.. so its easier to predict how long the game will last.. no timeouts, and breaks and all that bs....

Hey, hey...dukdukgoos reporting in from Seoul...I'm not going to the game, but I'm going to go watch it with a bunch of Koreans in a public square. If the U.S. wins, I might get killed...so GO REDS!!!! 😉

Anyway, it's fun here in Seoul. Haven't seen that many foreigners, but I've been hanging out in Shinchon, which maybe doesn't attract as many tourists. I'll be going to the France/Denmark match tomorrow and Spain/S. Africa next day.

Definitely a sweet vacation...

Nice. Keep us updated so that we know that you are alive. 🙂

Where are you posting from?

Maybe I should've gone to Korea in June, but my family got a sweet 3-week vacation planned for August. 😀

Agreed. The first two goals (thanks to Portugal's defense) changed the whole game. But hopefully the U.S. won't be hoping rely on that to happen again. Especially with S. Korea 'cause those guys are fast and relentless . . . South Korea may own the midfield. But then again, with the #@*^! refereing I have seen in the last few games, WHO KNOWS!?

I will be rooting for the U.S.
