Weighing in at 412 grams -- or roughly the weight of a can of green beans -- the gold medal is made up of only 1.34%, or about 6 grams of gold.

The rest is comprised of 93% silver and 6% copper.

Melted down and sold at today's market value, those raw materials would be worth about $650.

In comparison, the silver medal -- made up of 93% silver and 7% copper --- would be worth about $335. The bronze medal, mostly made of copper, would be worth less than $5.
 
waaah. i don't feel bad for them, they're competing on the highest of levels. they, if they win, get to claim to be the best in the world. pretty sure that has no dollar value even though we would like it to.

I hope we win every friggen event out there. I'm sick and tired of people trying to bring us down to the level of other countries. I want to stomp the crap out of everyone.
 
I got $100 that says China kicks our ass. Our amateurs v their professionals. We'll win basketball and such, but the bulk of events we use amateurs and they're gonna get their asses kicked because if they were great athletes they'd be playing basketball, football, baseball, etc. professionally. There is no big incentive for our athletes to go for the gold other than some fame and a few commercials, and that is only if they win gold.

Most Men's and Women's Track Events (though Men will be challenged by Jamaica)
Most Men's Swimming Events
Some Women's Swimming Events
Men's Gymnastics (pretty good chance)
Women's Gymnastics
Women's Tennis


Events China should win Gold:

Serena won Wimbledon only a few weeks ago, right?

I have a feelin' that the Men's tennis won't look too different from Wimbledon except that Djokovic ought to advance a bit further and hopefully, Federer will play better if he makes it to the finals. The finals were so sloppy!
 
I think we should start cheering for the states that people come from!


Hell texas is still larger than most other countries and could probably field a top 10 medal team.
