I think they got one review car for free, the rest they pay for them. BBC gives massive subsidization for the show.
 
I thought this week's was a great episode overall, though my attention flagged a bit during the rugby bit. I have to tip my hat to them for holding my interest without any real supercar tests.
 
The part about the park assist sort of made me wish that I got it on my car. My sensibility made me ignore the $1000 feature, but the tech lover in me goes, "Oooo I want to do that too!"

It was interesting to hear how much clamor they've had over the Mustang from people that they've encountered, but it's too bad to hear that they get a Mustang that's reminiscent of the old fox body Mustangs... stuck with a low-powered I4. I'm guessing that it'll be the same engine that's in my Fusion (Ecoboost 2L I4).
 
If the new Mustang is light enough a 2.0L ecoboost might not be bad? They could tune it like the ST and it'll have 260+HP.
 
It would have to be cheaper than the ST as well, to make any sense.
And much cheaper than the GT86...
 
I thought it was excellent. Doing 800 miles in that car would definitely leave you feeling beat up. A worse car Clarkson could not have picked.

And why can't Ford put better plastics in the Mustang and the Fusion? Cheap shiny plastic just looks like shit.
 
Enjoyed the episode for the most part, though the second segment of the old-people-car bit started to drag. Particularly loved the easy-listening version of the A Team theme when they were building the car. That auto-piloted truck James raced against was fascinating - was glad to see the US military cooperate with showing that.
 
A lot of people on a certain Top Gear fan site were complaining that this episode was a re-hash of prior shows, but I enjoyed it.
The old people's car segment was quite funny and the Range Rover review was incredible - I knew it was a capable off roader, but didn't realize it was THAT good.
I've been looking forward to the special next week since they previewed it in the first episode, and I have high hopes for that.
 
I actually enjoyed the past two episodes. They weren't stellar, but they're solid like last season was.

I see their point and yeah a lot of the past two felt like old Top Gear, but eh that's more of what I want. Plus that's what the show is more often than not, rehash of the same stuff (the bit at the end of the first episode was just them trying to rehash the Geewiz bit). Some of it gets tired and old, and some doesn't, its more about the execution though.

Will be interesting to see how the special fares as a two parter. I wonder if they're end to end or if they break them up with the news and guest. Their best ones (the first Africa one, the Polar special, and Bolivia) I felt probably left quite a bit of good stuff out of the cut, but I'm worried they'll interject stupid shit to pad things out. We'll see.
 
Part one in Africa sure was fun.

James with that 850 R definitely chose the best vehicle - just not for this trip 😀

I'll be waiting during the next part, for Hammond to make one of these over-exuberant moves, he keeps doing with his AWD, and break something important on his Impreza. It's bound to happen - things just went too well for him so far 😀

I was hoping for a bit of a drag race, on that air field, or maybe even a vs. Stig lap, but I guess the lack of that fits better into the "adventure" aspect of this one, which is - so far - less of a competition, and more of a collaboration.

I think one of the more enjoyable aspects about this episode, was that the humor wasn't as brash as it was other times, but more subtle, and intermixed with some aspects of seriousness.
So far, the cars may have held up a bit too well....

Does anyone know what app they use for their speedometer on that European race episode?
 
I enjoyed it more than Middle East and India, about the same as the American one, but less than the first Africa, South America, Vietnam, and North Pole ones.

These are still my favorite episodes of the show ever since the first Africa one. To me they're the best combination of what I enjoy about the show.

Did they release the other specials on single disc? I know they did for the North Pole, but am curious about the others. I have a hunch the Botswana, Bolivia, and Vietnam specials would have made great 2 parters. If they released them with a lot of the cut footage I'd love to know.
 
Where can I buy those cars for under 1500 quids? The all three would be pushing towards $10K around here. Are the used cars much cheaper in UK? I usually like the episodes where they have "affordable" cars but in this particular case, it seems as if they went way over the budget without telling us.
 
I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything when Clarkson's hill-stop mechanism failed, because I would have spit it all out!

I read the answer to the same question somewhere else, probably the top gear subreddit. Basically it's because those cars are under 30mpg and high mileage, in the UK they are cheap as hell.
 
It was a nice conclusion to the first part, and while at times I did get a bit of a filler feeling, they're allowed to do that, when they have such nice landscape to show. I wonder if they planned to submerge that poor Scorpio 😀
I kind of expect that to be the case, as otherwise you'd have quite a nasty oil spill, if you don't prep the car..

I liked the special quite a bit overall. The improvised car ferry was actually really impressive (though I'm sure there was more engineering and help from the crew than we were shown in building it).
