the rule is visible to the naked eye...so they actually have refs watching and ready to hand out warnings - get enough warnings and you're DQed

team is looking pretty good to reach the gold medal match

Hmm...many of their points are on service errors by the Cubans...lets see if they can hold their lead and go up 2-0

US did it! Up 2-0 over Cuba....just one more set to the Gold Medal round!

That interview with Laura Wilkinson was annoying as hell. She was talking like she was the diving equivalent of Spitz and Phelps rolled into one. Get over yourself, geezer.

What an amazing game!!! I loved how you could hear the chants of USA, USA, USA in the background! Only the second time the US has made it to the Gold medal round...the last time was in 1984 when they played against their current coach...ironic huh?

I'm watching the gymnastic gala, and something occurred to me. For all the people complaining that Phelps could only win as many golds as he did due to the different strokes and differences in swimming (whereas track and field doesn't have "running backwards" or whatever), what about gymnastics? 6 events, 1 all-around, and the team competition. BAM, 8 medals. The difference between the different apparatuses is comparable to the assorted strokes/distances, and the different gymnasts practice all of them throughout their career

I think it's entirely possible the next 8 gold winner will come from the gymnastics field.

I suspect on a per-capita basis the poms and the aussies are stomping china and the us 😉

I'm amused too see all you yanks getting so excited about the total medal tally, that's the perennial resort of those countries who are getting creamed by someone else in the gold medal tally 😉

If I were so inclined I could say we aussies are (or at least were) on par with the poms, but their gold medal tally pwns us in the face, albeit not quite as massively as the us/china gold medal chasm 😉

That would be much harder than what Phelps has done. In your scenario someone would have to win each and every single one of the events including the team event. 8 events to win (albeit only for the men) and you have to win them all.

To equal such a feet in swimming you'd have to at least win one event for every single individual stroke, an individual medley, and at least a team relay - probably the medley again to be more apples to apples...

Phelps has thus far only won individual events in the butterfly and freestyle (in the Olympics), and even if he decides to take on a new event (considering he's supposedly going to ramp down the number of events he's competing in, freeing up the opportunity to concentrate on something new) I seriously doubt he'll compete in all four strokes individually in the same Olympics, let alone actually take home gold in each.

To beat 8 golds it'll most likely be in swimming again or perhaps a multi sport athlete...

Kind of like bringing up the per-capita argument...oh wait...

Well I don't think China can catch us up in the overall medal count, as we might take some on the track and some on the team sports where China will not get any. But we won't be able to beat them in gold medals; we might end up in the neighborhood of high 30s in gold.

Never said it wasn't so.

Out of interest, does anwhere do a per-capita tally?

Of course, after a certain population size that should become statistically almost irrelevant compared to the amount of funding directed at atheltics programs in each country.

The poms have just done what we did after coming home without a single gold (they got one at least!), thrown boat-loads of cash at the problem

If a male gymnast can ever accomplish that feat, he will be greater than Michael Phelps as far as Olympians go and rightly so. That will be the single most amazing athletic accomplishment of all time.

yep. I would say that's impossible in gymnastics. for one, consider that your performance depends on the subjective whim of JUDGES.

While I give props to gymnasts and their sport, it is a crying shame that their sport is tied to the worthless events, like diving, in which minor deductions can mean the difference between 1st and 6th, and these deductions being determined by judges who may well not be qualified to judge their particular event (for anyone who watched the womens' gymnastics competitions, this is quite obvious).

...yeah, I'm sure this as been discussed at length in this thread, already.....but I only got my internet on today, and have been without the proper venue for venting after a recent move, and while watching this stuff unfold for the last few days :|

Can the announcers actually do their jobs with a straight face?

Beach volleyball is awesome.

BMX biking, softball, synchronized diving, and synchronized swimming are all not Olympic sports.

softball, yes. of course it's a sport. Hell, baseball and basketball are extremely popular international sports. softball is ladies' baseball, and as such, is a bonafied Olympic sport (well, it should be, after this year. grrr). American football would not be an Olympic sport b/c no one gives a damn outside of the US. (for comparison)

all the others though, you are correct.
