Nastia's mom is really pretty. It's easy to see where she got her good looks from. I like seeing the interaction between Nastia and her dad -- it seems like they have a good relationship.

This is what happens when someone is doing trash talking before an event, just like what Bernard of France did: Text

And the Russian girl rubbed it in deep...

Wow, that is some massive ownage right there.

If all she said was "?I hope we do some damage and, you know, kick some Russian butt,? I fail to see the trash talk. Of course she wants to kick some Russian butt. Isinbayeva's the world record holder and huge favorite. Was she supposed to say "and, you know, not get gold"? Of course, if she said more than that, then this argument is invalid.

It wasn't super inflammatory but why'd she refuse to talk about it in the press conference?

She singled her out and probably just gave the Russian more motivation.

Saying you want to beat the #1 in the world is now trash talking. ooook

Way to go Oz for giving the gold to a child. {sigh}

Nevertheless, congrats to Nastia for being the true uneven bars champion!

Congrats to USA Men taking Gold, Silver, & Bronze in hurdles!

Like I said it wasn't really that bad. It's good for the media of course because they care much more about drama than any actual athletics. The beginning of tonight's TV coverage covered so much old crap that had nothing to do with the actual events going on but provided good drama. How about show some more pole vaulting or long jump.

I love watching the Olympics and really enjoy watching the gymnastics but seriously there are some major issues.
Nastia has been unfairly judged a lot during these games, she consistently been scored lower then she should, especially when compared to other athletes that would make the same mistakes.
Consistency, there hasn't really been any. One athlete will do the same exact routine as another yet will make more and/or bigger errors yet still receive the same scores.
FIG needs to a swift kick in the ass and seriously needs to investigate issues that are brought up on age. They really portray a "We don't care" attitude.
Sports that require judges for the scoring really kill the games. All the judges really need to be trained throughly before hand.

The really bad and inconsistent judging really ruined the competition aspect of gymnastics for me.

Lotsa drama. It's infuriating. I mean, I know, it's just a piece of metal they hang around a little girl's neck, but it really does seem totally random this time around. These girls work hard their whole lives for these medals and the judging should be fair.

Thing is, in the past, I know there have always been judging controversies. Such is the case with any subjective sport. But this time around, it seems as though there have been many situations where the best performance didn't receive the gold medal. Worse, outright poor performances (the women's vault in this case) were rewarded with medals. I remember watching gymnastics at the Olympics in 1996, 2000, and 2004, and in almost every case, I felt that the three best performances got medals (I didn't catch the men's high bar in 2004 though, which of course had that major judging controversy associated with it).

I think the problem lies with the new scoring system. Looking past any possibly biased judges, the new scoring system gives too much reward to gymnasts who go for very difficult routines. They add more difficult techniques, knowing that they automatically get free points for doing them, and that any small slip-ups they make are only tiny deductions. Essentially, risk vs. reward has been replaced with just reward. I've seen swings of up to a full point separating the A scores of easy and hard routines. If a gymnast decides to add a 0.2-point extra to her dismount, for instance, she automatically gets those points. Then if she takes a big step on the landing because she bit off more than she could chew, she only loses 0.1-0.3 points. Sprinkle a few extra tricks into the routine and you've got a big cushion to balance out deductions.

What it does is it encourages overly risky routines, but worse, it de-emphasizes the classical focus on perfection in gymnastics. I think the best way to fix the new system would be to significantly increase deductions. Make all those little deductions really hurt to encourage a cleaner delivery over flashy tricks.

Whoah, I called the Men's triathlon wrong. Frodeno of Germany took the Gold, Whitfield of Canada took the Silver, and Docherty of Australia got the Bronze. But, I did call the women's race right. 😛

The pole vaulter said she wants to kick some Russian butt. Bernard said they were going to smash the Americans. That's the difference between trash talking and not trash talking.

Both are trash talking.

Great comeback for Whitfield! I thought he was out of it, then I thought he was gonna win it. Canada's proud of you Simon!
Yep, great performance. I'd have much rather seen him get the gold than Frodeno, I've never even heard of that guy. 😕

Is there anyone else here that feels like the US olympic triathletes need to be picked in a different manner than they currently are? I'm like 99% certain that Andy Potts would have done better than Kemper, Shoemaker, and Reed. Kemper did OK with 7th place, but Shoemaker and Reed were never even in the race IMO.

You don't know what trash talking is.
