Can we have more posts like these and less posts about the damn age thing? Seriously, China won the team gold, and we wooped them in the individual events.. let's move on.

Edit: In fact, there's a thread about it here: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2218900&enterthread=y

Actually, I posted (as well as others) evidence here in this thread evidence that would have seemed to be pretty definitive. This was long before that thread was created. But I guess some people missed it and refused to accept it so it go re-hashed here. Anway, I guess I've said what I had to say twice over. And ivan2 has unfortunately devolved this into personal attacks on me. Pretty sad but oh well.

Yeah I know American are getting their ass handed to them in Gold medal counts and your need to find every freaking excuse. But you need to get over the age thing already, like abaez said, Chinese women won one medal, US women dominated most the others.

I mean stop holding onto those couple of articles/news or so called government sources just because they have .gov extension. Even most prestigious newspapers recall stuff, make false claims. And keep in mind China with 1.2+ billions people and technology way behind modern countries, having good birth certificate isn't a given. So it doesn't matter how much evidence you think you have, there isn't any that's concrete.

There are lots of cool stories in this Olympics, Michael Phelps, USA Basketball, US women gymnastics. Why hold onto some rumor and be piss about something that didn't even mattered.

It isn't "QQ" it's stating the facts. Your initial refusal to admit the facts and backtracking now is what's really childish.

My issue was with your dismissing out of hand the evidence I presented to Stormrider due to his questions regarding the validity of the claims of the Chinese government's actions. This is where I characterized your contributions as nothing but "being obtuse and contrarian" and I don't see any change to this. Of course you ignored that and only responsed to it as an aside later to distance yourself from citing the evidence.

This isn't an "if" situation being discussed, it happend in 2000, 2004, and now again in 2008. Claiming that I'm childish for not posting about it before the Games is incredibly weak, even from you.

I might not be 100% on the enemy's side but I am nowhere near back tracking.

Nor is me asking whether any junior in the US could stand in to compete in this olympic a dismissal of an uneven playing field. And IMO, if the best can't compete then the competition can't be a serious one. (that was a genuine question btw, but instead accusations were given and insults nearly flew) As Nastia's case in 04 was given, I can say that I now understand more about your frustration, but because I don't cry alongside with you doesn't mean that I am in disagreement of your claims. I just feel that all the posts after the fact is like monday morning quarterbacks (of course even had we've known in sunday, we wouldn't have the power to change the game anyway), and we ought to be better than that.

Characterizing my opinion as contrarian is correct only in a personal level, but just because I don't believe your reaction to the lost is the most appropriate one it doesn't make me obtuse.

nothing is personal against you as I had a post before our exchange that meant for everyone who's red faced about the age issue after the uneven bar. The exchange with you were stem from my post questioning whether we can bring out more had age isn't a concern but that still weren't cleared.

See, this is exactly what I was talking about. Hashed out extensively twice already and here is another person who just refuses to get it. You can lead a horse to the water but you can't make them drink.

First of all, I never complained or made any excuses about medal counts. This is an ongoing issue about a level playing field so there is nothing to "get over." Are the Chinese going to just stop this? Not when the FIG just lets it go with a 😉

Second, you obviously didn't even look at the sources I and others gave. This isn't just a "couple of articles" it includes an official roster on a government site that has since been taken down (CYA)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...es-docum_b_118842.html

Third, the lack of birth certificate allows you to claim there is no "concrete" evidence because you know it doesn't exist, and even if it did, it would be supressed by the totalitarian government. I guess the admission from the gymnast that she was underage in 2000, the huge number of contradictory reported ages that go uninvestigated, and the pattern of repeated actions by the Chinese government isn't enough for you.

Of course I'm following everything else going on in the Olympics. But this is not just rumor, and it's an ongoing issue. If you bothered to look at all of the evidence with a shred of objectivity you would know this. This is what bothers me, people who just refuse to get it, not some win or loss.

I would still disagree with that assessment, I still think the artificial age restriction automatically creates an uneven playing field on a fundamental level, although I suppose it might be moot. I suppose that is something that could be discussed in that other thread.

And I reject your characterization of "cry[ing]" and "monday morning quarterback", I say this for the nth time, this is an ongoing issue of fairness that FIG refused to address before the Games and still refuses to address.

Finally, I was actually referring to your statement "our American government will never lie about little things like this" in response to the information I presented to another poster when I called you obtuse and contrarian due to annoyance at your dismissal of the facts. Obtuse because you seemed to not get it and contrarian because you seemed to be disagreeing just for the sake of being disagreeable.

Nothing personal on this side I just respond in kind. I suppose we could carry on that particular discussion in the other thread.

I'd bet 10-1 you're chinese and that's why you're defending them.

Simple fact is, yes, just about everyone who watched the olympics and the gymnastics competition can see how young the gymnast is. You can plausibly deny it all you like but I'd still bet the true age is <16 and that the chinese government knows it.
Deny deny deny, but it's too obvious to believe.

Also, I know the IOC won't do anything because they can't do anything. China has put themselves into an undeniable position. Sure. But don't fudge the truth because of petty nationalism.

The previous displays of china such as the child singer being switched pretty much show to what extent they will go to for the olympics.

Just another person *trying* to justify china's decisions.

meh

I've not been impressed with the Chinese during these Olympics. They still seem to be a totalitarian nation barely out of third world status.

Yup...and to make matters worse, the global economic problems are starting to hit China now....plus there are...(gasp!) labor laws dictating a minimum wage which has steeply increased recently. Its an interesting blend of Communism of capitalism that Deng Xiaoping started in the late 1970's. Next exploitation zone...Vietnam.

I don't know why you guys are so hung up on the age thing when it is obvious that the judging is the real problem. That tie break formula they used is beyond stupid, they drop the lowest and the highest, then essentially drop another? What if it was still tied, they keep dropping until there is only one judge left? I could think of a lot better ways of breaking a tie, why don't they just use the qualifying scores? Or, just keep the tie, and give two gold medals.

Liukin isn't the one that got robbed anyway, Yang was. Her routine was damn near perfect, but somehow she comes in 3rd.

Yep, pretty much. The age thing was probably the third worst offense during women's gymnastics.

I have no problem with medal counts or the Chinese doing well. There is a home field advantage in every Olympics. The crowds support their teams, there is a lot of pride, and judges (like refs in every American sport) tend to favor the home team. It's just the way it is.

However, it is obvious the Chinese have underage girls on their gym team. One in particular looks to be about 12. It's not just their face, it is their physical development and demeanor. That is against the rules, and it should be investigated.

I have an Asian wife and we have a little girl. I can pretty much tell how old Asians are now because I have been working/living/spending time with them for 18 years. So I have no problem judging age in that culture.

I don't know why 16 is the age, whether it is to prevent injuries or prevent overworking kids. But if China gets to bring younger athletes, then eveyr nation should have that choice.

All documents can be forged. But the rules committe can also insist on more documentation like birth certificates. They can also do background checks on each competitor, which would have easily discovered the ages of the athletes as they were corrected only a few years ago.

Cheating is cheating. If it's not a big deal, let everyone play by the new rules. But whatever the rules are, everyone should abide by them or be disqualified.

That american diving commentator needs to suck it and shut up.
Always nitpicking the chinese divers, while allowing for large spashes and other form breaks by the non-chinese.
Sorry bitch- we got our swimming medals, let the chinese have their diving ones.

Not chinese 😀, not that it matters.
But damn, I understand that she wants better non-chinese divers for a better competition.
Well, they gotta practice harder, 24-7, in a better funded program than what the americans, canadians or other non-chinese have.

We haven't had a good diver since Louganis retired.
