People are just saying that that debate hurt Biden a fair bit and that Trump is going to take advantage of it.

I'm also slightly taken aback at how lost Biden looked at times and this guy is our hope to be the leader of the free world in 3 or 4 years still!

Well at least I think it hurt Biden somewhat, although people always vastly overestimate the importance of debates. They CAN matter, but they don’t very often.

Like when Clinton demolished Trump in all the debates what did it get her?

I agree they aren’t held to the same standard. I also think people vastly overestimate the importance of debates. Can you tell me the last US presidential election you think was significantly impacted by one? I genuinely can’t think of one in my lifetime.

Obviously it would have been better had Biden performed better and at the margin it could matter, which is unfortunate because US elections are always close these days, but people really need to gain some perspective.

But as I said this is demonstrably untrue - he lost in 2020 precisely because people who intended to vote for him (and did!) in 2016 changed their minds and either voted for Biden or didn’t vote.

This is precisely what I’m telling you, people have these weird brain worms about how Trump supporters never change their minds. There is a base that’s true for but it’s definitely not true for everyone. History has proven this beyond a doubt.

I don't think people have lost perspective.
There's two things going on.
1) Biden lost a debate that everyone was expecting him to win.
2) Lots of people (me included here) are shocked at how frail and befuddled he looked at times.

I think that there's a proportion of them that won't change their mind and a proportion of them that are vulnerable to the weaponised memes that are going to get splashed everywhere after that debate.
 
Most Americans are not political. Many Americans rely more on emotion or gestalt or peer pressure than facts and data.

Trump, of course, is a cognitive mess for all sorts of other reasons, but since the voting public seems to make decisions based on emotional reactions to superficialities, I think it’s worth the Dems spending a few months acknowledging reality but making it clear that Biden is nevertheless the way better choice.

Trump admitted that Putin told him about his ‘dream’ of invasion. If world leaders respect Trump like he claims , and the invasion should never have happened, then why didn’t Trump stop his good pal Putin? Because he can’t…or won't because he is full of shit. This needs to be an ad.

Trump is a pants-on-fire liar, pants-shitting convicted felon. And yet, he’s polling shockingly well. I’d have thought a pants-on-fire liar, pants-shitting convicted felon running for president would poll in the single digits, spotlight or no spotlight, yet here we are.

I had a comment to post on this thread before the debate happened, and decided not to bother. But it was just to the effect that expectations of Trump are so low that he can't really lose, but if Biden has a Mitch McConnel 'buffering' incident it might be disastrous for him.

Sounds as if it wasn't quite as bad as that, but it probably has damaged him, and helped Trump. As if things weren't close enough already.

Biden was already down in polls almost everywhere besides blue states. Let's see if he drops even further in the polls.

You're going into it knowing Trump is a deranged lunatic. You're expectations is that he is a deranged lunatic. For people who don't pay attention, they just believe that if Trump is the candidate for President than he must be competent to some extent.

If you're listening to a bunch of politically tuned-in people analyze Biden's performance in the debate while not discussing Trump, you're going to get a different reaction than to people who don't pay attention to politics. So of course all the reactions to politically-tuned people is to immediately close their eyes and just start shitting in place as hard as they can.

Meanwhile, there are presumably people who don't pay attention to politics who may have just listened to Trump rant and rave about nonsense and consider that a bigger downside to Biden not doing cartwheels or whatever.
 
I'm pretty confident an intelligent 8th grader who's into politics and maybe joined a super casual debate club for maybe 3 months could have easily trounced Trump. Instead we got Biden, what a fucking joke. The Democratic party should be fucking embarrassed. Four goddamn years to get ready for this election, what a fucking pathetic party.

I can't believe people are still defending this. I've seen a lot of people realize that those of us being concerned about Biden's age along with his capacities, probably had a good point. But there are definitely some cultists.

I think Pete has a very solid chance in 28, especially if he moved up the cabinet a bit in the next term. But I think he'd have a better shot at the general with a longer lead in, so people can get a bit more familiar with him. If he stepped in now I think you'd really anger the black voters pushing Kamala aside and replacing her with another white guy, and IIRC black tend to be the most anti-gay part of the democratic coalition.

BTW Biden could dump Kamala onto SCOTUS and go with a younger VP like Corey Booker or Raphael Warnock too.
