Sounds like a video card problem - try with a PCI video card for starters.

Mine says FF if everything boots correctly. Are you using a clean harddrive or are you trying to use your old system still on your drive? Even though its not advised, I ran my old setup without reformating, and just replaced the needed drivers but if you did this It could be the cause of your problem. Where did you plug in your monitor (video card, or mobo)?

It sounds like its something to do with your video card or monitor. FF is a good thing though.

Thanks hchu and impeachbuch.

I tried with a new PCI video card (VisionTek Radeon 7K) as you recommended, but unfortunately I still don't get anything on the screen.
I am still trying to boot with the minimum components, as my goal is to get to the initial BIOS screen.

Is it possible that the MB simply did not detect the video card because it is not in the PCIe x 16 slot?
If the answer is no, the suspect is narrowed down to the MB, the PSU, and the CPU, from the most likely to the least.
I am confident I did not electrocute the CPU because I never touched its pins.

Does the CPU have to be functional to get to the BIOS screen?

BTW, I am not using a CPU fan (for that matter no fan at all in my case). My case, a Zalman TN500AF, acts as a big heatsink, and heat from the CPU, the video card, and the northbrige is transfered to the case by metal pipes. For more information, take a look at http://www.quietpcusa.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&DID=8&Product_ID=192&CATID=9

The MB manual does not say that a CPU fan must be attached to post, so I assume it's not an issue.

All the components except the case have been recently bought from newegg.com. Does yours show "FF" from the moment you power it on till you see the Windows logo on the screen?

Update: My PC boots up and runs WinXP with the PCI video card I bought for testing. It does not boot with my Power Color X800XL, though.

The cause of the problem was that the +12V 4 pin power connector was not connected to the MB. The manual says "Warning: both the main power connector and the +12V power connector should be connected to power supply; otherwise, the system may either not start or be damaged." I somehow misinterpreted this as a warning AGAINST connecting both connectors when I first read through the manual.

So far my PC has been running smoothly. I will run some stress tests (Prime 95, memtest86, etc) later to make sure the mistake did not cause serious damage.

As for my Power Color X800XL, I can think of four possibilities.

1. DOA
2. I damaged it
3. PSU not suppling enough power with the video card (it is connected to the auxilary connecter)
4. Compatibility issue (i.e. the video card does not work with the MB)

I don't think #4 is likely, but it cannot be completely eliminated unless somebody successfully builds a PC with them.

Thanks everyone for minding my PC issue.

epicwave,

I read on some other forum (can't remember where, though, sorry) about someone having a problem like yours . Turns out that the DVI to VGA adapter was borked. May be a long shot - but could be something else to consider.

I don't think it is the board he was refering to. I think he was talking about the dvi/vga adapter that comes with some video cards that might be borked.

The cause of the problem was that the +12V 4 pin power connector was not connected to the MB. The manual says "Warning: both the main power connector and the +12V power connector should be connected to power supply; otherwise, the system may either not start or be damaged." Yep. I almost did that as well until I read through the manual. You probably didn't harm anything, unless it damaged your video card somehow.

As far as the FF goes, mine counts up to about 99 right before it boots into windows, then if everything is running right, it'll read FF while booting windows and until I shutdown. It sounds like your board is booting up correctly.

Yeah. It seems to be the board with the least amount of problems. At least compared to the OTHER via PCI-e (ASUS A8V-E) - Hopefully an SLi version will come out. I wont be going for that anyways.

How's the overclocking going for you guys?

Yes, how is the overclocking going? Hear so little about this board, makes me think it is a fine choice. DFI, or Soltek, DFI or Soltek, hmmm... Soltek takes a 20 pin which is supplied in the Sonata, DFI wants a 24 with a 480W PSU, hmmm. Seems the easier choice on the wallet is right here in front of me....however with stores not having it in stock, I may break down and spend the extra $200+ for the DIF and different case/PSU (seems silly doenst it) :)

And the DFI hit 365, running prime95 for 48 HOURS. two days of prime. I think the DFI is stable!!!

280x9 is all I want out of my 3000 anyways. 2.4- 2.5 Gig and I will be extremely happy! I want to be able to do this on stock cooling too. Should this be possible, or will it run a tad too hot?

The chipset will not run hot (according the cluboc reviewers) even at 280MHz. The CPU temps depend on how it overclocks, and how much Vcore you'll need.

If you're aiming to overclock the processor with a moderate (+5-7%) Vcore increase the boxed cooler should be fine.

So basically luck of the draw on what vcore the CPU needs to run stable at the OC speed yoo want to run :) I gotta say, OC'ing sure has changed since the days of my C300A@450 and the C566@850 where it was change the FSB to 100 and the way you go.
I was looking at the BIOS settings online of the Soltek and DFI and was a tad overwhelmed! Yikes someone like me could certainly wreak havoc in there!! I by no means am a noob to building PC's, been doing it for 13 years, ,but tweaking things in the BIOS is another monster!

Yes and no.

Yes, because my PC works when it is coupled with another PCIe card, ATI Radeon X700Pro (in fact I am writing this from it).
This probably means my MB is not damaged.

No, because I haven't yet tried with another PowerColor X800XL. I shipped mine back today and will try again when a replacement arrives.

The other issue I had with the MB is its Gigabit ethernet. A network connection has been pretty shaky. A $10 U.S. Robotics PCI card solved it.

Hmm, I guess the next logical answer if the replacement does not work is the PSU not supplying the x800xl enough power. I do hope it was simply a bad card!
