Official Resistance 2 Thread

And it seems like critics freaking love the game. So stoked for this!

IGN: 9.5
OPM UK: 9 - scans available here.
NZGamer: 9.2
1UP: B+

I've had the game pre-ordered for awhile, and have been sold on it from the moment they announced it. All this hype is killing me, I just want the damn game in my hands now! One more week... one more week.

edit: Let's make this the official thread, one doesn't exist yet. 🙂

I hate FPS on consoles due to controls but this game is making me think twice.

I agree, they really need to give users the freedom to use input devices other than the controller for games. Allowing users to create mods / custom content (maps, etc.) for the games would be great as well, maybe a community PSN download area where users can view, download, and install them? Sony could load splash screens with dynamic advertisements to recoup the cost of the extra bandwidth / hassle when people release community made mods.

The first one felt like Halo, it was the first console game that I played through entirely since Halo 1. It was worth a rent, this one likely will be as well. But, I do not plan on buying it... $60 for a game that I will play through once is too rich for my blood (no plans for multi-player, at best COOP on the same device, like I did with the first one).

Update: Added more reviews and scans from OPM UK.

Dacalo, I'm with you on console FPS gaming. Not usually a huge fan, and any game that's available on the PC and consoles, I always choose PC. But since this is console-only, no choice here eh? And because of that, and because it looks to be so damn good, I'm sold. I'll deal, and I'm decent at the multiplayer from playing in the beta.

Dammit.... I beat the first Resistance like 6 times.... how much time will I f'ing waste on this next one?!?!

Then again, playing on a 96 inch HD projector is worth it....hehe

I'll probably pick it up eventually. I only recently bought the first Resistance, didn't care too much for controls, weapons or monster HP... Still, it was playable enough. I'm with others on the matter of FPS and console = suckery.

Enemy HP has been significantly altered. Now the grunts are just that - grunts. They die with ease. Other enemies, and specifically in order of their size (from maybe twice your size to the size of sky-scrapers), will require exponentially more damage dealt, which makes sense.

Personally I love the idea of Insomniac Games making FPS games. They've always excelled at platformers/action titles, and Resistance proved they could grasp FPS gaming, but had its flaws. Resistance 2, according to reviews, my beta feedback, and feedback from other testers, they have worked out the kinks and ultimately improved on Resistance in every way possible.
The idea of major boss fights at the conclusion of chapters will probably irk some people, and while I'm not entirely sold on the concept for an FPS game, I think it sounds like they have weaved them into the story perfectly and sounds like it'll be a wonderful change to the typical FPS formula. Insomniac Games is brewing instilling their own flavor into FPS gaming, and its a novel approach imho. Probably will turn off some people, but I personally like boss fights. While I hate the 'fight with one approach, die, and repeat until you figure it out' nature of boss fights, it's a throwback that could work well. Usually I pick up the necessary strategy in the first or second go, but usually very close to death by the end. So we'll see how friendly this game is when it comes to boss fighting strategy.

Does this game exist? How come noone is posting about it? It comes out today right? Got a 9.6 from IGN...I sure as hell would like to see some user opinions on this game as I'm about to go buy it after work.

I'm typically pro-IGN, but they posted their review last week with the header "IGN Exclusive Review". Anytime a review is exclusive, I immediately discard it.

I love it so far. So much better than the first. Looks beautiful, and is a blast to play! 🙂

I got the Collector's Edition: the bonus BD seems to have some nice content on it, the small art book is nice, and the action figure is well-made and very detailed, and you can place the rifle in its arms.
And the bonus disc has a recap of all the events that led up to Resistance 2, which is awesome for those that haven't played R1. I haven't watched it yet, but I think I should, as I never got around to beating R1.

Love the game! Looking forward to playing multiplayer with all the maps that weren't in the beta. A very well-rounded game that really has something to offer for everyone.

Yeah, but they are BIIIIIIIIIIIIG aliens. Possibly the biggest boss fights in the genre. You also have some cool multiplayer options, like 8-player TF2-like co-op and a 60-man vs. mode (which I'll pass on - I need a mouse for vs. competition).

But aren't they heavily scripted? I've always found big boss fights fairly lame when you can't kill them on your own terms.

Eh, kind of scripted, but that's boss fights in general - tend to have a specific weakness that requires a certain weapon.

But outside of the bosses, there are some big baddies in general, and these you can pretty much kill with whatever you fancy, some choices just require a lot more effort/time, and usually one of the better weapons to do so with will be somewhere nearby. I recently had this example before - stuck taking down 3 big baddies with only rifles, a major PITA and I died a few times in the process, and when I finally got through, I discovered what is essentially an explosive-round launcher. Would have been MUCH easier had I known that.

Oh, and those zombie-like things (can't remember the name they are given)? Creepy as fuck, reminds me a lot of the fast/jumping zombies from Half-Life 2. Ugh I hate them. Won't spoil entirely why other than that, because the game design is just perfect so far but is easily spoiled due to the linearity.
Game kind of draws a bit from the Call of Duty series - very specific and linear, but genuinely exhilarating experiences, as well as nerve-racking and anxiety-producing moments, at least for me. 😛 Great pace thus far (in Chapter 3 as of this post), pacing changes up a lot, and you get great breaks where the action changes up, and before you can get bored of that style, it switches, but in the context of the game it all feels perfect and flows great. Story thus far is amazing if you feel like paying attention to the various sources.

Can someone who has it confirm/deny that it allows 2 player co-op on the same console via split-screen?

You can play two player on the same screen, but the co-op mode is not like the first game...you can't play through the campaign in co-op mode. I was actually really disappointed that they took that out, and you only get to carry two weapons at a time...

Single player is pretty fun though, I'm two levels in.

You can't play Co-op in campaign mode?!! Seriously, what are these game developers thinking? Playing the campaign is SO much better when playing with friends. WTH? Why would they take something like this out?

Bigger than Serious Sam?
