DF did a test of a bunch of PS4 games on PS5 and determined that there's pretty much no backwards compatibility issues for the vast majority of PS4 games!

It's very odd that they left out so many popular games including first party titles such as Last of Us 2 and Uncharted series. I'm very disappointed that some older games will still not have the ability to run at 60fps as it's going to be aggravating as hell going between games that run at 30 and games that run at 60. And I am more than aggravated at the fact that a game like Last of Us 2 is not even getting enhanced or any updates at all and will still run at a garbage 30fps while looking the same. I absolutely will not buy a PlayStation 5 until I see 60 FPS and some visual improvements for that game.

Have to say I am a little surprised the loading times on unpatched games aren't that much better than PS4 in some cases.

Many games load even faster on Xbox Series X. SSD speed is not the only factor in load times.

Also, you cannot offload PS5 games to external HDD for temp storage, seems they can only ever reside on the SSD. Very bizarre limitation.

Yep, but that was shown when the PS4 was pretty hit or miss in the loading time improvement when adding an SATA SSD. It's possible that BC games are running the CPU in some sort of Jaguar compatibility mode (running at 1.6 Ghz, etc) to maximize compatibility.

Seems ps5 has no VRR support among other features that are kind of lacking (1440p, auto HDR, external game storage). Disappointing in a way

This makes me very happy. I care alot about backwards compatibility. I love the fact i can play some of my fav games with far better performance. Going from 30 to 60fps totally changes the feel of games, so im very excited to revisit my favorites10
Did you not watch the video? Not every game is going to go to 60 fps. And many of the big games they did not even cover will still be at 30 fps too such as Last of Us 2.

The skeptic in me kind of thinks that's because Sony wants to release a TLOU 2 Remastered for PS5 so they're intentionally hindering performance of the PS4 version.

Last of us part 2 looks good as it is for a end of life ps4 title. Even if they remaster it, I'm not sure what they will do to make it even better looking. Possibly just ray tracing and allow it to run at 60 fps.

True. I'm more thinking about them trying to double dip however they can.

Not all games are 60fps though. Blood borne didn’t hit 60fps on ps5 for example

I see but Isn't the upcoming games for PS5 will run on 60 fps?.

Not at 4K or with certain graphics features depending on the title.

For example DMC5 is 4K 30fps with ray tracing, 60fps with ray tracing off and 60fps with ray tracing at 1080p, demons souls is 1440p at 60fps, assassins creed is up scaled to 4K on ps5(Xbox series x is native 4K), spider man is 30fps at 4K with ray tracing and you have to turn ray tracing off and the resolution drops a bit to get 60fps, watch dogs is 30fps at 4K with ray tracing(this is the case on Xbox too).

There is no word on whether any of these games has frame rate drops or if it’s a solid 60fps.

It is going to be a bit of a mess having to chose next gen visuals or 60 fps. And going back and forth between a 30fps and 60fps is quite jarring. I was playing through the Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection on the PS4 which is 60 fps and it was a bit painful trying to play Uncharted 4 at 30 fps after that.

The fact these conversations with all these stupid buzzwords are going on right now with consoles really saddens me. I liked it when all of this talk was for nerds only and they weren't mainstream, but I am not surprised at all that it's become mainstream now.

Just give me games that look fantastic. I don't care what buzzwords they have or what resolution they are or what 3 letter acronyms they have. Just give me awesome games that look fantastic.

We care about 60fps as much as people care about input lag in fighting games. It just plays better. There is sometimes a sacrifice to get there at 4K resolution though once you apply all the bells and whistles. The idea that every game would be 4K at 60fps is not happening. Mostly due to ray tracing hurting the frame rate.

In the future this probably won’t be as much of an issue because AMD is working on a type of super sampling that would allow developers to use a high quality scaling algorithm and render the game and apply ray tracing at say 1800p before the final output at 4K. If done right the quality will be nearly indistinguishable.

Personally I don’t need 4K and I think games can look really nice at a lower resolution with a bit of AA applied. However there is an industry push for resolution and the masses seem to want everything to be 4K or bust which I don’t really understand. I mean if it’s a choice between 1080p and full graphics options at 60fps or the same game at 4K and only 30fps it’s an easy choice to me

I'm not saying anything is wrong with the conversations or anything. But just gimmie good looking games that perform regardless of how you get there.

Any game (fighting or not) that has input lag is a bad game though. It's just unacceptable to have input lag that hinders gameplay regardless of the reason.

Oh believe me I hear you. But there is marketing involved with a lot of this. After a while you won’t hear much about it outside the Digital Foundry deep dive videos.

I do think people had certain expectations for everything to hit 60fps but of course it’s easier to sell a game based on how it looks in videos so they push the graphics over the edge and we are back to 30fps a lot of the time.

If you missed out on getting a PS5, and you're still looking to pick one up, you should be able to get another chance this Thursday (i.e launch day). It appears that retailers will have consoles available for purchase, but regardless of whether it's an online store or B&M, it looks like all stores are requiring you to purchase online. (I assume this is to avoid excessive crowds... like we've been seeing with the whole month-long Black Friday deals.) I haven't heard a lot about timing from all retailers, but Walmart will be releasing stock at four times on Thursday 12PM, 3PM, 6PM and 9PM (all EST). I saw some internal documentation from Target that states that while consoles will be in the store, they must be purchased online for in-store pick-up. (I assume they'll also have online-only stock too?) As for Best Buy and Gamestop, I haven't heard anything yet about when the consoles will be available.

Sony has a new FAQ about the PS5. Says the PS5 does fully support HDMI 2.1, but no specific mention of VRR. Also says they are looking into Cold Storage for PS5 games.

I'll check online on Thursday and see if I can get one. Kind of checked out on the system though since all the preorders were painful to get. Haven't even watched YouTube reviews of the console yet. But I see that ACG and other reviewers are putting out ps5 game reviews already.
