Official: people running red lights should be dragged from their cars and flogged.

So I'm on my way to work this morning and waiting to hang a right at a light near Emory U. The light for the cross-traffic turns yellow, so I start looking to my left to make sure no one's coming and see a lone Volvo sedan. As it gets a bit closer, I can see the driver is jabbering away on a cell phone and apparently trying to make up his mind if he can make the light or not. He finally guns it and blows through the intersection.....and through a light that has been red for a solid 3 seconds. :|

WTF is wrong with people that they can't be bothered to wait for one light cycle? This was right across the street from a university so there are bikes and pedestrians all over the place. One jogger started to cross the street when he got a walk signal and had to immediately jump back on the curb when the f*ckwit in the Volvo ran the red. Are you really in such a hurry that you'd risk the lives of your fellow humans? Selfish asshole.

I'm willing to bet he's the same kind of fvck that speeds and then fights the ticket to get out of it saying that the cop that gave it to him is an a$$hole.

I actually had that happen to me two days ago. But the runner was a pickup with a big trailer, so maybe he didn't think he could stop in time.

I was really wishing I had a paintball gun with me so I could mark the guy as a complete idiot; thereby allowing others to give him a wide berth for their own safety.

heh...reminds me of that bit Gallagher had. Give everyone a dart gun and when you see someone do something stupid like that you shoot a dart at their car. After they get a few, they get pulled over and ticketed for being an a**hole!

We have red light cameras here in Wilmington NC. A lot of other citys in NC either have them or are getting them.

They are great for 2 reasons. One it reduces red light runners almost over night, and two even if you do get one if will not raise your insurance. It is like a parking ticket, just more.

All I could do was point at the light with one hand and give him the one-finger salute with the other. He actually jammed on his brakes like he was gonna get out of the car and kick my ass or something. Amusing, since he looked to be about 50 years old or so and quite overweight. I was almost hoping he'd get out so I could beat on him a bit for being such an idiot. :p

After seeing a dump truck loaded with rock run a red light at 60 mph, I always wait a couple of seconds after the light changes before I go through an intersection.

The daughter of a woman I used to work with was killed exactly from that. A dump truck ran a red light, in the rain, and plowed into her. He had been well over the speed limit, too. :|

This guy wasn't even speeding. He just decided not to wait for the light. :|

For my opinion on these types of drivers, please refer to the current "I'm a piece of crap that weaseled my way out of a ticket" thread...

Yesterday, I saw the aftermath of a dumptruck + small sedan accident. It looked like the dumptruck ran over the front end of the sedan and dragged it through the intersection. The dumptruck looked fine and the sedan was pinned under truck.

I almost got T-boned by some guy running a red light a few months ago. The guy even had the gall to look at me like I was in the wrong!

Depends on how you look at it, I suppose. There's the obvious potential for "Big Brother" abuse, but at the same time they are effective. There are a few around town at bad intersections and they do indeed keep people from running the damn lights.

Same here. I was on a six lane road - 3 lanes east bound, 3 lanes southbound and a median in between. I was in the furthest right lane with cars in both the lanes to my left. We were sitting at a red light. Opposite direction light goes yellow, cars in the intersection finish up their turns. Our light goes green, and I start to make my way through the intersection. Next thing I see is a big piece of construction equipment with a 15 foot tree log mounted on the front of it like a harpoon start plowing it's way through the intersection from the left. WTF?!?!?! The driver of the thing looks at me like I'm the one at fault here! :|

I agree. Whats even worse is when you see someone actually run an actual red light. I'm not talking about it just turned red, but it's been red for awhile and someone just doesn't stop at all despite cross traffic and such. I saw that happen twice. One was downtown here. The light had been green for us for quite awhile (I could see it from a distance) and as the guy in front of me just started going though, someone just blew through the red light. The guy in front of me slammed on his breaks and just barely avoided getting tboned. Speed limit was 25, but i'm sure that the retard that blew through the red was doing at least 40.

This is nothing more than another result of the general disregard for traffic laws and customs that began with the 55 MPH speed limit. In the days before 55 the vast majority of drivers stayed within 5 MPH of the posted speed limit which was generally set by the states for their specific road conditions. Most drivers drove right and passed left and truck drivers had the respect of the majority of the motoring public. Once 55 became the law of the land people continued to drive at their previous speeds and it became a cat and mouse game as some states used it as a revenue generation scheme while others came up with ways to meet the federal mandate with a "wink and nod" type tickets. Once you get used to ignoring the posted speed limits then it is not really a stretch to start pushing the limits on other traffic laws as well. All the red light cameras achieve is opening up another front on the tit for tat game between law enforcement and citizens. They install cameras and drivers add license plate covers. They outlaw license plate covers and someone develops a transparent spray that serves the same purpose.

Unless they changed the law, running a red light in NC is 3 points on your driving record. Maybe that only applies if a cop actually pulls you over and gives you a ticket.

We're getting a couple in Raleigh also. I think one is up and running already.

Question about the stoplight cameras - will you get a ticket if you are trying to make a left turn, take posession of the intersection, and can only complete your turn once the light has gone red?

Or do they have these cameras in interections with left turn signals only?
