I read somewhere that one region's model (Japan maybe?) will play DVD so it's not a technical limit but a marketing one apparently. Doesn't make a difference to me personally, I have a DVD player and even if I didn't they can be found for $30 or less.

i am not buying the system (even on the xbox or PS3 (if i ever get it)) for movies. i am getting the system to play games on.

DVD. It will not play DVD-VIDEO discs, because that would have required additional licensing fees.
