It's based a lot on exit polls. And, as we've seen with Florida, they're not always that accuarte. :)

St Louis polls are NOT still open

that ruling to keep them open was overturned, they were closed at just after 8PM

nader isn't changing florida, bush is up by 140,000, nader has 75,000.

cali only has 21% reporting right now, which is why bush is up but gore still wins.

Help me, I am still curious how California can declare a winner when only a small percentage of votes are in and now Bush is leading in popular votes in that state. Can a state give the votes to Gore even when the opponent is leading in votes in that state?

Florida update:
83% counted, Bush only up by 100K. Gore has closed the lead by 50K in the last 3%.

BUSH (REP) 2374487 50%
GORE (DEM) 2270811 48%

It appears that the part of Florida that hasn't been counted yet is 2/3 democratic. Wow this is a nail-biter. :D
