Vista will try to re-install the old drivers upon normal reboot. So I uninstall old drivers, then boot into Safe Mode to install the new driver set.

Is there a driver cleaning program for Vista that would remove them and prevent that?

I ran into that problem with WinXP and my SD card reader driver... I had to delete the .sys file manually from the system32 folder otherwise Windows never gave me a chance to pick another driver.

It did not happen in my case. I uninstalled the 169.25, and Vista installed the generic VGA drivers.

Installed the 175.16 after that with no issues at all.

Seems like the performance in Crysis and other games has improved. Even the "Dream Scenes" don't crash my desktop anymore. They did not work well before with 169.25.

I put in a email to Nvidias custom care regarding this issues. Here is the response that I received today.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused, and we thank you for reporting this issue.

We are aware of the issue and that it is indeed specific to XP since Vista handles Shader compilation differently. It is a complex issue and we are working diligently to alleviate the instances of stuttering in certain maps, but we do not yet have an ETA yet for a complete fix.

Again, our apologies for the issues you are experiencing.

Please feel free to contact us for further assistance.

Regards,
NVIDIA Customer Care

Since this issues has been around for years and they havent provided a fix for it yet. It seems like a slim chance that I will ever be addressed. ;-( I wish I would have know this before I bought my 8800gts.

Edited my name correctly :0

what? no! that was for ATI before AMD bought them (AMD fixed 5 major installer issues in the driver within 2 months)...

The best way for both companies today is to just install the new driver over the old one. Download, double click, click next and agree.. it is really that simple.

IF and ONLY IF it somehow does NOT install properly, then install over it AGAIN. only if the second "install over" fails would you go into driver cleanup mode. installing over twice works better then cleaning up the old drivers first.

I have had a decrease in performance in Call of Duty 4 with these new drivers used with my 9800GX2. Most maps I would average around 91FPS at 1920X1200, with 16x AF and 4x AA, but now it drops down into the 30s and 40s when outside. Never used to do that with the previous WHQL drivers.

Are we suppose to uninstall previous drivers before installing new ones? All this time i've been just installing new drivers on top of old ones....
