*OFFICIAL* Norton Anti Virus 2004 SUX the big one

ndee

<rant>
new computer from my parents:
athlon xp 2200+
2x256MB RAM PC3200
asus a7n8x
western digital 80GB harddisk
windows xp professional
norton anti virus 2004

Now, they were complaining "ndeeeeeee, the internet is soooooooooo slow...." and I'm sure that's not true because with my computer, it's blazing fast. I do a test with NAV2004 Auto-Protect on and off.

NAV2004 Auto-Protect on:
I go to yahoo.com and klick on "Mail", it takes about literally 10 seconds to get there.

NAV2004 Auto-Protect off:
I go to yahoo.com and klick on "Mail", it takes about 1 or 2 seconds to get there.

I did that test on various pages and also a couple times on yahoo.com. I think that's the reason why I will never install an Anti Virus. Any solutions to that "performance" problem are appreciated. I know that an AV uses some performance but come on, that much longer?!

Norton scans your temporary internet files, what do you expect?

Sounds more like your crappy setup has something to do with it though, dont blame symantec :disgust:

OK, how could I turn it off that it doesn't scan the temporary internet files? When I turn the anti virus off, the computer is as fast as it should be.

Just get rid of NAV and get AVG from here

Just get rid of NAV and get AVG from www.grisoft.com

my parents paid for NAV and they would be majorly pissed if I installed another AV hehe maybe they wouldn't notice? 😉

You dont, auto protect scans any active folder / file on your computer.

You have probably configured something wrong with your machine, i have no idea what though, cant help..

One thing i will admit slowed down my computer, was having "Auto Scan Compressed Files" on, i now have that disabled.

Ok, you can blame symantec for that one, its a crap feature.

It shouldn't be that bad. I use all Norton security programs at the computer level of security. Make sure you have all the updates for it. I think there is something else conflicting with it, try contacting symantec for support

yeah right, what could be wrong? First I thought it was the video driver cuz it's an ATI Radeon LE, changed that, didn't help anything. I did that because I saw that the picture was "drawn" kinda weird sometimes. With the Catalyst 3.7 drivers, these problems went away. Can you explain me if I turn NAV2004 Auto Protect OFF, that the computer is as fast as mine(check the link in my sig) and if I turn it off, it's really really slow?

I installed all the latest WinXP patches and also just did a Symantec LiveUpdate.

Yahoo mail? that is webmail. sounds like it is scanning for malicious HTML or Java code in the web page. An old version of pccillin I had would slow the data transfer speeds by half when i had it enable to scan for malicious Html, activex or java code. I have only looked at Norton AV2004 a couple of times so I'm don't know if you can disable this particular scan or not but look in the scan settings somewhere and see if you can. I personally kept it disabled in my old Pccillin and never had any problems. Pccillin 2004 doesn't have the issue anymore and has a pretty nice internet security package included unlike Norton and MacAfee.

Indeed. Why switch to a product that's a bigger piece of crap?

Norton, especially AV is great for me. I did the same test you describe and the difference is negligible.

I have been using AVG for a couple years now. Why does it suck?

Low cpu usage, guards against virii, and inobtrusive...

You have got to be kidding me. The free edition Grisoft AVG sucks. Trendmicro does a better job than it does. I'd recommend trying to fix whatever Norton Antivirus is messing up.

man there's a huuuge lack of arguments in this thread, if you say something sucks please explain why, and how you have come to that conclusion please, you cant just say something sux and have ppls accept that.

anyways, I never use norton since it really slows down sjite to much.

all Pc's here in the house use avast.
