16-bit processing, but no word on the ADC bit width. probably 14 bits. the 16-bit internal processing is to leave extra room to prevent rounding errors.

D3, too, uses 16 bit internal processing. 16 bit internal processing is nothing special, IMHO.

What's interesting is that D3X will use 'special' OLPF. That OLPF will be the key point, I think.

never seen that acronym before, had to look it up: Optical Low-Pass Filter, to save time for those just reading this.

maybe it'll have weak to no low-pass filter, and handle moire reduction in software?

Weak OLPF, maybe, but no OLPF would lead to a lot of artifacting, as in the Kodak DCS-14n

What's interesting is that there was a Canon engineer interview about how they plan to get rid of low pass filter and do the work in next version of Digic. It'll be a another break-through in imaging technology, I think.

However, I don't think D3x will not have OLPF in this stage. Weak OLPF sounds believable as it was the case of 5D although Canon used it to save manufacturing costs. Nontheless, the result was good.

the Sony A900 has a very weak filter in front of the sensor & indeed at a wider distance than usual.
I really wouldn't be at all surprised if the Nikon is using a modified/tweaked version of the Sony sensor.

FWIW, Nikon had a weak AA filter on the D2H, which gave it pretty good edge acuity and surprising punch for 4 megapixels, though there wasn't any actual increase in measured resolution over using a stronger filter.
