Overpay for defenceman seems to be the theme this season.

Kubina sign with the leafs for 4 year 20 mill.

Jovo at 6.5 mill...

With all these overpaid signings, Pronger's trade value is increasing.

Oilers re-signed Roli - 3 yrs, 11 million. Hope he doesn't start showing his age! :Q

Savard signed by Boston. He's a bonafide point-per-game guy when he's healthy.

Lots of rumours... Oilers better have a lot left to announce or quite a gew guys are going bye-bye.

Holy crap...I knew Boston was going to make some moves...but Chara?!?

...and now Savard?

I just woke up, checked the Boston sites and I was like...WTF?!?!

:Q

Also tsn reports Leafs signed Hal gill, some one mentioned 3 year 6.3... Man theyre going like hot cake!

They can have the human pylon... 😛

I'd rather have resigned richardson for the 4th spot. Now only Mckee is remaining.

Hal has been better the last couple years, but he's much less effective with the new rules. I've never really liked him in Boston, and most Boston fans have been begging for him to go for years, but he was a (old) management favorite. I'm surprised he got that much from the Leafs.

I'm excited about the Chara signing, and yes we overpaid a bit, but Boston is trying to change their image and make it a place players want to come play, so it was inevitable. I'm not so sure I like the 5 year deals though....5 years is a loooooooong time.

I can't wait to see Kessel playing...if not this year then next. I also think that goalie prospect we got from Toronto was a steal...although he won't be able to come over to the NHL till the end of next season.

I also like the Dave Lewis coaching change...gives us someone who knows what it's like to win...

I hope Raycroft doesn't bounce back awesome and give us fits everytime we play the Leafs this year...

I almost forgot, we were going to buy out Zhamnov, but apparently we can't because his ankle injury he got last year will be "career ending". I think his career was on the way out before any injury personally. Anyway, if that is the case, we will still have to pay him some, but IIRC, none of that money will count towards our cap unlike buying him out.

So there's another 4 mill free...

I want more SCORERS!! I also think Murray needs to go...unless they can get him a good setup man. Oh...idea! How about Weight for 1 or 2 years?!

I think Chara got what any team in the league would have paid him, so hes really not that far in what he supposedly should have gone for. Remember though, that the cap COULD go up in couple of years, and the price you would have had to pay to keep Chara would be a lot more at that point on a shorter contract. Redden might ask for more then 6.5 in 2 years when his contract expires. But mostly, I'm just glad Ottawa didn't get to keep both Chara and Redden. Also, Redden is notorious for disappearing in the playoffs, so you guys got the better man from the duo.

I don't really mind the gill signing cause we needed a defencive defenceman, but thats just too much for a possible 5th/6th man. With who and what depth position did Gill play in Boston anyway? Hopefully Maurice can utilize the positive side of his game. And Raycroft HAS to perform... or else we'll maime JFJ in a stick and hang him in front of the ACC.

My bad, I thought they were giving Hal 6.3 mill per year! :Q

There was never a real pairing with Gill in it...he would play with different defenseman all the time...thanks to to the meh coaching of Sullivan. IIRC, he used to play most with Tanabe..

I like how we look on defense and goal for awhile. Chara, Brad Stuart, Paul Mara, Milan Jurcina, Andrew Alberts and Mark Stuart sounds good to me!

Hopefully someday soon I will be able to see a first line of Kessel, Bergeron, and Boyes...

I really don't think the B's are in as bad shape as most people think. A few more good roster moves adding some scoring depth and we are in pretty good shape with a lot of young guys.

I love how teams are quickly and dangerously jacking up salaries for players. It better not get back to the point where every damned team loses money and the league shuts down again.

Also, rumor has it McKee's going to St. Louis.

Edit: Nevermind, I guess it's more than a rumor. TSN has an article on it. Well that stinks.

I don't think it can. The salary cap is set each year depending on how much the league revenues are. Some teams may overpay for certain players, and possibly limit their future signings, but the cap is still the same for all teams..

Right, the cap went up a few million this year.
Though the Sabres, who went to the conf finals, only profited 4 million this year.
If all the players want a raise, then they basically just lost money or broke even at best.

Yeah, but it's the first time in about two decades since the Sabres actually made money. They are and always will be a small market team, as long as Golisano keeps them in Buffalo.
