Why would the fans feel humiliated? They don't play for the teams. Fans like that are so god damn annoying.

Sports is entertainment. Whether or not my favorite team wins has no real effect on my life. It is, however, a chance to pour my emotions into something that is entirely meaningless by definition. In real life, I don't have the option of making the world a black-and-white place. The real world is full of grey areas and I potentially hurt myself and others by oversimplifying things. In sports, I get to hate the Jets and the Colts and love the Patriots for no reason whatsoever. Frankly, both Rex Ryan and Peyton Manning seem like really nice guys, and if I met them in person I'd probably be charmed. In a sports context, I get to hate them because I can, and there's no consequence. Nobody gets hurt because I dislike Manning (note that I will never root for a player to get injured). I can blindly support the Patriots for all time because they're my team, even if I don't own a part of them.

There's no reason in fandom, and despite the fact that I'm otherwise an obsessively rational person, I'm OK with that. Sports give me an outlet for all those hypercompetitive emotions that are often counterproductive in the rest of my life.

I must ask you: If you don't have a sense of ownership of the teams you like to watch, then why do you watch them?

Good points. I just watch sports because I enjoy watching athletes at the highest level compete, and I love sports in general.

Mind you I'm 30 years old and have lived in Cincinnati my entire life, so my outlook on hometown teams has been skewed at best. I have one great memory, the 1990 Reds going wire to wire and beating the big bad A's.

I don't know...I just think that many fans take it too far in this ownership you talk about. They start to lose track or reality and actually believe that they play for the teams, and they forget that the athletes and owners couldn't care less about them.

I understand what you mean about sports being an outlet for people to let loose and go crazy for something that's utterly meaningless.

The closest player in the NFL I could consider that I pseudo 'hate' is Ben Roethlesberger, but it isn't because of the Bengals - Steelers (not a Bengal fan). I don't respect the man personally, and I think he's a scumbag. I couldn't hate anyone else...because most players I notice that whacko fans hate would welcome that player on their team anyway.

I viking fan . BUT the starting QT is not who I want to watch . The vikes won't make the playoffs this year so start Joe WeB and build a team around a 2 qt back system with Web and Ponder . Send the other guy down the road. I will be pulling for Detroit this year . and A. Rodgers getting his ears lowered big time.

Looks like Fairley is out for the opener, but I still feel pretty good heading into TB.

Jack del Rio cut David Garrard today. This is the second time he's cut his starting QB after the last preseason game. Curse you Jack for making MJD (my #1 pick) that much less attractive but kudos for basically ensuring my prediction that JAX sets the all-time low attendance record is met.

LOL. You think having two "starting" quarterbacks is a good idea? It has never worked in the past and it won't work for the Vikings. You must really be desperate. My advice is to embrace your bitterness and cynicism instead of trying to fight it by pretending like some magical strategy will cause them to succeed this year. They'll go 6-10 at best, and I'm a Vikings fan myself.

 Because the Saints beating the Colts 31-17 is a result of the officials messing up. Steelers-Packers was a much closer game but still.

wai, what?

is there some game going on right now?

KT is a Vikings fan so he's hoping the Chargers start slow like last year and give the Vikings a chance to actually win a game.

Ya right Joe web and ponder in the same backfield with sweet . Ya I sure that won't work . Ponder has good wheels also . and the vikes had a really really good draft

I'm guessing he left out a "to". Or maybe not. Either way, I'm pretty sure KT is a Vikings fan, so he wants to see the Chargers get off to a "another" slow start (I guess they did last year) and lose their opening game against the Nordics to the north. I rather like the Vikings (actually, I pretty much like all the NFC North teams) so I wouldn't mind seeing them beat the Chargers, although I kind of like the Chargers too.

Boston is getting bored with sports. The last two days have been non stop talk about a pats and moss reunion.
