I sure as hell won't be paying a monthly cost, so I guess I won't get it on release and see how it fares for a few months. Thank you activision for ruining online gaming. Damn greedy tards
Did you miss the part where multiplayer stays the same and this is a high end OPTIONAL offering with perks for those who want to pay? How does that affect release day purchasing?

Because they haven't revealed a ton of the details yet and I know that their end goal is to get to a monthly subscription to play online. It may not happen with MW3 but they DO want it.

Dedicated servers used to be all you even could use back in the PC glory days. I would not pay a premium for an easily implemented "service."

Edit: Oh, I see what you mean. And no it's still not worth it.

The beginning of the end for Call of Duty, thanks a lot Activision.

Fixed.

It's like they want Battlefield 3 to take the top shooter crown. B3 was going to have a tough time overcoming MW3, but this hopefully makes the decision a whole lot easier for the general public.

That being said, I will probably get MW3 (in addition to B3) if and only if:

- Amazon has a $40 preorder offer like last year
- This "Elite" fee only adds features I have no interest in

Just read the kotaku article, the service seems incredibly lame based on that article alone. Halo, starcraft, and battlefield (hell even black ops) already do stuff like that for free.

I realize a lot of us are hating on the pay service, but let's be honest... if it actually was everything they make it out to be and only a couple dollars a month, I'd say it'd be worthwhile. Think about the MANY hours of gaming we get out of CoD. 100's, easily. Much more bang for your buck than MANY other things we waste our money on.

That said, CoD has to be VERY careful. Halo offered a lot of those features for free. They just didn't have a game that was as enjoyable. If BF3 can compete in terms of gameplay with CoD and it offers similar features for free, CoD will be in trouble. Yes, I'd rather have these features for free, but ultimately I just want to have them. If it means paying a few bucks a month, I'm alright with that. I'm just happy the industry is innovating and trying to evolve. Competition is great. BF3 will hopefully bring the best out of the CoD franchise and I'm really hoping its a worthy competitor.

I will say one last thing though. Developers often hype all these features and then they turn out to suck. The stat-tracking in Black Ops was supposed to be revolutionary and amazing. It SUCKED compared to Halo. I at least expected it to be Halo's equal. Until I see these features implemented I'm going to assume its a lot of hype.

Ya know, I just had a thought, I don't think this subscription is going to work.

Everyone keeps comparing CoD's success to WoW's, one of the reasons the idea of a "pay per month" service keeps coming up. Here's the difference though, WoW hasn't changed in what, 6 1/2 years? Sure there's been updates and expansions and such but it's still the exact same game. With CoD being on a 1 year cycle and different games pandering to different gamers, they're looking at losing a big chunk of their user base every other year. I mean think about it, how many people who loved CoD 4 hated W@W? How many people who hated MW2 love Black Ops and visa versa? The series changes so much that people are NOT going to pay a monthly fee to keep it up when "their" style of game is here today, gone tomorrow.

Just my thoughts though.

Sure, multiplayer might stay the same, what what are these "added benefits" that they make reference to? They get the maps for free etc, but what else might they get exclusive? Perhaps an assortment of guns?

Unfortunately I made the first day purchase of Black Ops, and although it is enjoyable now, it was much much worse when release came out. All I am saying is that based on what I am currently reading, I will give it a month or two before purchasing it. Nothing has really sold me on the game. It's costly enough without the extra fee on top. Unless they're going to do weekly patches and stay on top of issues, then it's just another CoD, and IMO not worthy of a monthly fee.

i doubt ill but MW3, wasn't really planning on it anyway, its becoming like madden, same shit every year. having a paid service added to it turns me away for the fact alone.

bungie.net is really cool and TBH im surprised others didnt do it sooner but its free, having to pay for it is stupid

You don't have to pay for it. There will be features in COD Elite that will be completely free and some that will be 'premium'. Best bet is that the stat tracking and many of the community features will be free.

Even then, you aren't even required to sign up for either the free or premium versions of COD Elite to play Modern Warfare 3 online.

Bingo. Everybody needs to chill the hell out. It costs nothing to play COD online and there will be some value add for free. Yes, this is a step towards subscription based gaming, but we aren't there yet. Chill pill! :whiste:

I've already said it before, CoD is the Madden of FPS's. Rehash the same stuff every year with tiny little incremental changes and they know they can do that because it'll sell like hotcakes anyways.

i see no reason to support the direction they are heading if i hate where itll end up

This. It's principle. Good god Activision overtook EA as the shittiest game company. When did this happen? Now all Activision needs is those bullshit online passes like every EA game has.

call me when you realize activision tricked you into paying 30 bucks in subscription to get a 15$ map pack for free 😛

an dyou have it backwards, BF3 is the one with the real features, but who knows if it can win over the spawn shot die lemmings

Call of Duty to have an optional monthly fee

Let the milking begin... also lawl at the bold part.

uber lawl. I've watched arnold movies that required less suspension of disbelief than the COD campaign

I hope Activision's execs get hit by a bus for this retarded decision. What other companies provide for free, they want to charge money for.

I'll wait to see the details on what exactly they want to charge for and how much before I jump on the hate bandwagon. So far, it seems like they aren't going to charge for the stuff people really want (i.e. online stat tracking) so I'm curious as to what they have up their sleeve besides the "free" maps.

I can see it now, a new map on release day that's only available to Elite subscribers, instantly fragmenting the community. New map(s) on Nov 8th to Elite subs, then on Live 2 months later, then on PSN a month after that.

I'm just not sure what world we're living in where EA is totally getting a pass for all the incredible bullshit theyve done and continued to do with their FPSes through the years.

Battlefield 2 was the first game where weapons from expansions could be brought into the vanilla game. Many were clearly more powerful than the vanilla weapons. Never happened in CoD.

Battlefield 2142 was littered with billboards where in game ads were to be placed. I never actually saw one in game, but there was a HUGE stink about it at the time. It would even rob a few cpu cycles from you to better determine where to place ads so they'd be most in your face. Never seen an ad in CoD.

Bad company 2 was BY FAR the most rapey. The limited edition came with day one unlocks that were available to all players. There was the VIP code nonsense. They charged for class "unlock shortcuts". They locked even a simple horde mode (onslaught) behind a $5 paywall. They even teamed up with Dr. Pepper for some cross promotion. They even charged for gun camos! CoD hasnt done any of the above.

MoH was no slouch either. The limited edition even came with a weapon (mp7), that was quite good, and completely impossible for non-limited players to unlock. There was a whole host of limited edition/paywall/microtransaction nonsense that I cant be bothered to look up because the game sucked so bad.

And BF3 is months out and theyve already started with the preorder/limited edition nonsense.

As much as I hate $15 map packs, they havent done this kind of bullshit with CoD, ever to my knowledge. Whatever nonsense activision has in store just cant compete with what EA has already done and shows no sign of slowing down. Am I honestly the only person that sees this?

No game EA has put out has been so incredibly popular as the CoD series is right now. It's as simple as that.

I guess it's a hipster thing.

I'm sure both games will be fine packages on their own, but EA is miles ahead of activision in regards to this kind of greediness. I mean its not even close. Every time I hear someone talk about how EA and BF3 are going to save the day from greedy activision it just makes me vomit in my mouth a little bit.

Nah, just a popularity thing. You look at the CoD threads on here and they easily reach into the thousands of posts months after release. You have a Bad Company release and the thread maybe reaches 300 posts and that's within a week of release, at which point it dies off because nobody cares anymore.

With so many people who "care" about the CoD series, you're going to hear a lot of bellyaching about anything. On the other hand, if EA tries to charge extra for a game that everybody forgets about after a week, then you're not going to hear anything about it.

Its also because CoD originally spawned as the anti-EA and now has become everything we hated about EA and MoH in the first place.

See, I was fine with EA adding the "VIP Pack" on to BF2 for people who bought the game new. It was a move to encourage people to buy the game new rather than second hand, which I understand, and it was available on the market. They make zero profit on used game sales. BUT adding on exclusive weapons that you can't unlock separately is crap.

I agree, Activision has rapidly become the new EA.
