Not at all impressed by this game. Great graphics and compelling story line but I just didn't care for the gameplay at all.

After having played Drake's Fortune this game does not at all come close to being as fun IMHO. The AI is completely retarded, the controls are clunky, and they make a poor effort at explaining how to do simple things like dragging enemies away. They assume you've played all the other MGS games I guess.

I'm almost sure that cutscenes don't factor into playtime.

I wish that were true, but my first run through was 21 hours and I'm pretty sure I didn't spend an extra 10 hours replaying a bunch of parts. If anything, I probably reloaded more my second time through. I'm looking at the clock on the debriefing screen to avoid any confusion.

After my 3rd play through, I think you're probably right. Cutscenes don't appear to factor in, but something else does. I was looking at my new save for my fourth go, and it was 8 minutes for just running straight through the first, intro/training level. Maybe loading or pausing, oh well.

Speaking of, I went from 20 hours to 12 hours to 7 hours. My best badge is still Eagle. I'm going to try a total stealth, no death run. Hope I don't have to break my controller.

I disagree with you guys, I think the cutscenes do factor in. I compared one of my saves right before the ending of Act 3 (before the long ending cutscene started) to one that I saved after the mission briefing between Act 3 and 4, and there was an hour difference there where I had absolutely no play time. Plus, I put in almost 15 hours on the game at the very end, and most parts of the game I just ran through since I was playing on Easy (I had rented the game and was rushing through to complete it before having to take it back). There was no way I played for 15 hours PLUS all the cutscenes that I watched. The cutscenes absolutely factor into game time.

1. AI - Yeah, they it's not the best...but retarded? C'mon. Besides, AI like this is pretty much expected in MGS games (when it is being dumb)...I'm guessing because it's pretty humorous now. This is a different type of game though...I don't know what kind of AI you're expecting.

2. Clunky controls - I'll agree that they can be, but I never had a problem with them. Now, playing MGO with the controls is a different, even clunkier story.

3. Poor effort at explaining - Erm...read the manual? 😕

Perhaps if you had played the other MGS games, you wouldn't be whining so much. It'd make a lot more sense to you. I'm not saying you'd enjoy it any more, but at least you'd "get" things.

Cutscenes DO factor in.

1st play through watching everything: just under 24 hours

2nd play-through skipping everything (cutscenes/CODEC calls): 3 hrs, 46 mins

I finished it yesterday on easy at 25 hours. I was Vamp's bitch for over 2 hours, before I cheated to beat him. My title was inchworm, which was #24 out of the list of 40.

I never played any of the other Metal Gear games, and didn't know it was a stealth type game until a pal told me. I was at Act 4 by then. Far too late to change strategy.

I absolutely loved it though. This is one series that should be made into a film.

Is there a list somewhere that breaks down all of the rankings?

i just finished act 3, played it straight through in one sitting.

this game truly is almost an interactive movie, but in a completely good way. i get completely sucked into the story and cut scenes and find myself going "woah" to myself quite a bit during some of the cutscenes.

i have definitely hit atleast 45 mins on 1 cutscene but i didn't mind.

[EDIT, nevermind, I just didnt go in far enough 🙁

Great game so far, I am about 1/2 way into act 2.. I dont mind the cutscenes terribly, but it does get frustrated when I only get an hour or so to play, and the damn movie takes up 45min hehe.

i just bought this game on Boxing Day.

never played any of the other Metal Gears.

what am i in for? LOL sorry to bump an old thread but this seems to be the official one.

a bit behind the times... i know... :awe:

Mass confusion unless you take the time to read up on the story. It's a really great game just that it has a very indepth story and background. I think you can get the majority of the story in Wiki.

Yea it's already confusing if you've played every game but I can only imagine how bad it is if you've never played one. This game definitely needs the person to know the back story.

Well, you would be constantly asking, "who is that" or "what the..." Having played the previous Metal Gear Solid games before and still asking questions about the characters and certain things that takes place in previous games. Although you might be in luck since there is Metal Gear Solid 4 Database for download and you can probably catch up on some stuffs. Also, there is Metal Gear Online which have no real relation to the Metal Gear Solid storyline and just play with others online.

I played MGS4 without playing the other 3. I had no problem understanding the story, but it would of been just as fun to play the first 3.

i picked up mgs this weekend from gamestop for 20 bucks and feel EXACTLY the same as you do. uncharted 2 was awesome. this just isn't. ill try to beat it for the sake of beating it, but it's just no where near as fun.

i started playing last night. seems decent so far, i will continue playing.

the controls and everything seem very natural.

I know i'm like 2 years late lol, but after having this game for over a year just sitting there, i finally beat it...all i can say...WOW...

I should have finished it early, this thing is a work of art. If you haven't played it and you got a PS3, and if you don't. This game is worth every cent.

10/10. This is video games at their finest.

Is that coming from someone who has played all of the other MGS games too, or did you just randomly pick up 4?

Nah, i've played all the Metal Gear Solids. It's just that i had completely forgotten that the game existed lol. both uncharted 1 & 2 just completely swallowed me in since like last year and then bad company 1 and 2 just ate away my summer and i completely forgot i had MGS4.

I feel the same way as him; the only MGS I had played before was 1 for PS1.

11/10 but gets 10/10 cos the story was a little weird and long 😛

did you read up on the story of the other games first or just go in basically blind? It looks like a solid game for quite cheap these days, but I have a feeling not playing any MGS since 2 will really hurt me from caring. And I didn't even pay attention to the story then.

I had played MGS1 in '99; just walked into MGS4.

I didn't care too much for the story, honestly. The atmosphere and gameplay are top notch and were enough to keep me on my toes till I beat it. I don't often beat games (get bored) so that is a big deal.
