I have Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATAII hd. After updating the latest bios, I opened windows device manager and noticed the tranfer speed was reduced to udma5. There was no way I could get back to udma6, other than flashing the previous bios back.

I don't have device attached to the classic IDE controller (except DVD-RW, but that doesn't matter)

Bummer. I suppose I have my very own issue then 🙁

Three pin connector has speed control
Four pin connecter has speed control only if you connect a four pin fan.

It's not a voltage control, but a low frequency PWM.

BTW : It's not a good idea to connect the cpu fan to one of the case's fan connector.
These fan are controled by another thermal zone, and ramp up only if the cpu zone become very hot.
But if you are comfortable with this behaviour....it's your choice

I flashed back to bios 1458, and now I'm back to Ultra DMA 6.

Another weird thing.. There are new INF drivers at the intel site. However, installing it did nothing at all in my system. It seems like no files were copied.

I'm running with Maxtor SATAII 250GB and BIOS 1545. It seems that my HD is running in UDMA-5 as well. Can't say that I've checked this status on previous BIOSs.

In Device Manager on my machine it only tells me what UDMA I am running on IDE devices, not SATA.


Where in Device Manager did you look at to obtain this information.

Yeah, i read it wrong. All fan headers do have speed control, the 4 pin one only has control when a 4 pin fan is used! Sorry about that, my mistake

Not quite clear on the distinction here. All I know is that it changes teh fan speed and the only way to do that on a 3 pin fan is to modify the average supply voltage.



BTW : It's not a good idea to connect the cpu fan to one of the case's fan connector.
These fan are controled by another thermal zone, and ramp up only if the cpu zone become very hot.
But if you are comfortable with this behaviour....it's your choice

This is interesting. I have been trying to get Intel tech support to tell me where the thermal zones are (the "manual" is clearly wrong or at least incomplete"

I'd be happy to use a 4pin PWM fan if anybody in this country (UK) actually sold 120mm 4pin fans.

The CPU zone seems to run the same temperature as the CPU to within three or four degrees whatever I do, so I don't see the problem of using that as a CPU temperature sensor.

It's under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. The first 'Primary IDE Channel' Stands for SATA hd connected into sata port 0 on mobo. We have to remember that we are currently running our sata disks in emulation mode (due to lack of ACHI driver), thus we are using the conventional ATA transfer modes.

You should see 3 Primary ATA channels and 3 secondary ATA channels?

Are you sure you are refering to your optical drives? Most optical driveves don't support udma5 mode. I'm not sure if any (not sure about the latest). LG-4160b should support udma2, if i have found correct info. If you look at your IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in device manager, what does it read in the last 'primary ide channel' of the three available? That shoud be where your optical drives are located.

if you have connected your h/d to sata port 0/1 you should see you disks in the first 'primary ide channel'..?

As for the pictures, your sataII is givin the burst speed it should give. My disk gives only 133mb/sec (udma6 max. is 133mb/s). I'm really wondering what is happening here.
 
Update: The burst speed mystery is solved. It appears be that seagate barracuda 7200.10 series disks are by factory default in sata I mode. I removed the small jumper from my disk, and now I'm getting burst speeds of around 248Mb/s.

The udma mystery however still remains
 
I've been running my DP965LT since September with the NEO-HE 430 and I have never had any problems booting up and running the system.

first pri ide channel reads a single device as udma 5
first sec ide channel reads a signle device as udma 5
the 3rd pri ide channel read 2 devices both at udma 4

so i guess you are right about the udma 5 devices as being my hdds.
i never really checked their status prior to upgrading to this bios, but my hd-tach scores are about the same. so i'm pretty sure that the performance hasnt degraded by the bios upgrade.

You're quite right with "average supply voltage"
With PWM, instead of reducing the voltage, it sends short pulses of 12v. The advantage is that the fan rotation speed could be much more slow than only with a voltage reduction.
As english isn't my native tongue, I'm not comfortable to explain pwm, so you can have more information here

I agree about the missing manual 🙁

One of the drawback of connecting your cpu fan on a case connector is that your cpu fan won't ramp up smoothly, but wait at low speed until the cpu zone is really hot.

 
So, did anyone manage to sort out the oakcdrom.sys problem yet? Just thought i'd ask.

*Edit*: I myself tried 3rd party boot OSs (eg FreeDos) but to no avail.

Intel cam up with a sorta circumvention.


You use an alternative called sbide.sys (yes that is from creative, so sb prbably does stand for sound blaster) and a dd a line to config.sys which runs something like


DEVICE=SBIDE.SYS /V /D:cd1 /P:2018,10,2010

where 10 is the IRQ allocated to the IDE device by the bios, and 2018 and 2010 are the addresses of I/O ranges allocated to the CD. These calues could change in principle, but so far I have onlu encountered:
2018,10,2010
and
1018,10,1010


The have promised a proper solution this side of Christmas.





On the Linux side Acronis hav identifed suitable driveers and are producing a new build of TrueImage, Disk Director etc.

i'm about to get a 8800gts probably xfx.
are there any known issues between the 8 series nvidia cards and this board (dg965 or dp965)

I didn't read it anywhere. I am an OEM customer of Acronis, and contacted them when I discovered that TrueImage and Diisk Diretor did nnot work fully on teh DP965LT.

Recenetly the sent me a test version with updated linux drivers, and it recognized the CD drive on my DP965LT.

The inform me that the new build will be based on the version of Linux with these updated drivers.

I agree that this might be a problem. I've been testing it. In fact the CPU fan connected the the exhaust fan header rams up very smoothly. The motherboard temperatue floows teh CPU temperature with a delay of about 30secs, but it does follow it, and behaves very smoothly.

Very interesting as Acronis don't give any information about this on their forum support.
In fact, I'm very very disappointed by the customer support.
I'm not a oem customer, but a "full version" reseller.

About the fan control :
It's strange your fan ramp up smoothly when connected to the exhaust fan connector as during my tests, I noticed only 2 different speeds : about 30% and full speed.
I'll test it more in depth.
 
It worked! I edited the config.sys and the autoexec.bat (for the mscdex) on a bootdisc, booted up, and had a functional DVD-Rom.
