I still can't get the Desktop Utilities to work, even after manually installing the SMBIOS and doing a fan redetect.

Also - I'm trying to find if there is any image software that will work with this board. Does anyone know if Acronis True Image works yet?

BTW, I also get a Yellow Exclamation Mark on Device Manager in System Device for the
Intel(R) Management Engine Interface. Is this normal since my BIOS is not yet updated

hmmm. is EIST disabled in ur bios or is it enabled. try turning it to the other value and see if the flash works.

 
Hi guys -- nice info in this thread. I was hoping someone could give me a brief walkthru on what I need to do regarding using this board in a new system if I were to build it today. I haven't built a new computer in years.

Do I just ignore any of the installation CDs that came in the box? If so, what do I need to download exactly? Do I need to burn those to a CD and boot from it? When does the installation of the O/S come into play?
 
Yes, ignore the CD that comes in the box - I never touched mine! Download the latest BIOS and .inf file from the Intel site here (assuming you use XP) http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts...=all&ProductID=2374&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Home+Edition&lang=eng&strOSs=45&submit=Go%21

After you've physically installed the board (making sure your RAM is 1.8v or 1.9v) install the OS. The first thing you must do after this before anything is to install the .inf file. Then flash the BIOS to the latest version. Also download the latest version of Desktop Utilities from the Intel site so you can monitor CPU temps etc. Mind you, I still haven't got mine to work...
 
Ok, thanks much. But I have a few follow-up questions:

When you say to install the .INF file, is it something that I just have to run? Or do I have to put it somewhere?

Also, I see that the BIOS update is a program that can be executed from Windows. Does this mean that I won't have to do any file burning to CD before I start all of this?

@xboxist - The best way is to execute the BIOS update from Windows, but I would definitely burn the recovery .BIO file to CD/floppy in case the BIOS flash fails. Read the README file at the Intel site.

The .INF file is also an executable program that you install from Windows.

I just figured it out!

I received an email from Intel a while ago regarding clearing event log and performing something else.
So before clearing event log i read what it contained it had log this one "Dimm 0 Missing". and others. After clearing log, saving and exit, system
restarted then I got an error message saying that Dimm 0 was missing and it was required by Management something, Press any key to continue.
Pressing any key resumes boot and it just logs the error.

This got me wondering, I placed my memory in Dimm 2 so it was away from the heat sink and the memory clip for Dimm 0 was obstructed by
the PCI-E video card. So what I did was power off, remove video card, remove memory from Dimm 2 and place it at Dimm 0, put video card in
connect others, restarted system, boot to windows and then run the update again. And guess what it ran smoothly, no errors, no blackouts. Now I
can finally finish setting up the system.

Thanks a lot to all your help especially peter, alitayyab, cRazYdood and the other guys and gals that replied to my questions.
If anybody else encounters a similar problem like mine I'll be glad to help them out. Again thanks a lot!!!!
 
Ahhhh ok I thought my problems was finished but I just found out that when I place my memory to Dimm 2 again I get an error Log
Manageablity Engine Channel A Dimm Missing and then I cannot see any stats from hardware monitor. Am I the only one getting this.
I guess I'll have to leave my mem at Dimm 0 near that hot heatsink.

(Ohh you can also place it at Dimm 1, so Channel A means Dimm 0 and Dimm 1)

This is documented on page 21 of

DIMM 0 of Channel A must always be populated. This is a requirement of the Manageability Engine.
 
Owwwww they should have placed that in the Quick Reference Guide since they never printed the manual.

Hi all,I'm new.
I also using this board,everything seem like no problem.
but now i got a problem,
I unable to using SATA hardisk with AHCI mode,
I know i must reinstall windows if i switch to AHCI mode.
But during the windows installation,it unable to find my SATA HDD.
Intel website only got F6 installation driver for RAID,i've tried it,but useless.

So,anyone here using SATA hardisk with AHCI mode on this board?

I'm sure you have checked this, but are you sure your heatsink is fully 100% seated?
There are 4 plugs to push through mobo, and I had difficulties to get one of them seated. It seemed to be ok, but in closer look it wasn't.

DigitalBob, thanks for pointing out the memory mapping of this mobo. It seems normal then.

In case someone here is getting 'false' boots, while turning main power on at the PSU, that can be fixed by setting wake on LAN off in bios.

The ICH8 variant (82801HB) that is used on the DP965LT does not support RAID or AHCI. Other variants that are used on the DG965xx do support these.

I would claim that if the BIOS is offering you this choice, it is a BIOS bug.

I'm not quite clear what you are saying here. I see nothing on p44 that says that AHCI is not supported.

Are you suggesting that the AHCI should not be there because the absence of RAid Support means AHCI is also not supported?

The section header in the middle of the page says "AHCI (Intel ICH8R, ICH8DH, ICH8DO only)"

If you refer to page 12 of the DP965LT spec D5601702US.pdf (download pointer earlier in the thread), you see that the part on the DP965LT is 82801HB.

If you refer to the title page you see that 82801HB is the ICH8; 82801HR is the ICH8R, and so on.

If you go to page 444, section 11.4, where the AHCI controller registers are documented, this is also called out as being inapplicable to the ICH8 part.

Took me by surprise also. Right now I am leaning to the DG965WH due to the fact that it does have RAID, AHCI, and optical out.

i also got the mail from intel said that this board no supported AHCI....so sad...

but i tried setup Windows Vista RC1 in AHCI mode,that's work! no need any F6 installation driver,Windows Vista already built in Standard AHCI driver.

Now my (windows xp) intel desktop ultilities show me my both SATA HDD is UDMA 6 (ATA 133),so...that means SATA is only running as ATA 133 speed on this board?

Sad news indeed concerning ACHI support. I know this board is low budget, but does everything have to be ripped off.

Have you checked this specification update:

Ah, good spot. This would indicate that revision 202 and later has switched over to a part that does possibly have AHCI and/or RAID and/or support for up to six SATA ports (the ICH8 only has four). However the "HH" variant is not mentioned anywhere in the chip spec, so it is still a bit unclear.

That pdf describes the chip is also known as ICH8DH

So thinking that this might be the chip used in later board revisions, and the fact that windows sees all 6 ports, we could assume there is ACHI support. Also, bios seem to support it.

..but if it were so, the f6 floppy method should have already worked. The floppy contains drivers for ICH8DH, but mine didn't get recognised when tried it. (although, I don't exactly remember what options it gave, and not sure if I chose correctly)

xboxist: lack of achi means that when you have a brand new fast sata II drive, you must run in old paraller ata emulation mode. Perhaps not a big deal in normal web/gaming usage. But audio/video editing would benefit from every bit of performance.
 
Well that stinks. I just bought two SATA drives for my computer that I'm building. I would like to return this motherboard, but it's certainly not the only board out there with issues right now. Can ACHI be implemented via a future BIOS update? Or is it a lack of hardware on the board?
