okay i flashed the bios on the mobo: result
1. We get thermal monitoring: this has now become the problem:
-CPU Die/Core Temp Startup=45; After 10 mins it goes upto 60!!!!!!!!
-Stock intel Fan speed = 931 (rpm?) max
I got a mid tower casing with a 120mm exhaust fan. used it with a64-3800 before and my load temps with that never exceeded 44 with arctic freezer pro, or 50 with stock amd cooler
I reseated the hsf. There was thermal paste on both the cpu and heatsink base. It's the stock intel cooler.

Questions:
Anyone who flashes their bois; can they please post there temps. please.
Also if my temps are high, should i just ram the entire thing or replace the fan?

Yes... I have flashed this bios also.


A lot more info, and some settings, have appeared. I was expecting (because INtel Tech Support told me) that the RAM votage would select 1.8 or 1.9 automatically.

Maybe it does, maybe it does not. Ther is no RAM voltage readout.


My CPU is maxing at bout 56C, with a fan speed of 902.

Both rubbish:
I have CoreTemp installed under windows whch reports 45C Idle and 64C at 100% load with air at 26C. That's very plausible.
The fan is running 2000+ at idle temps from the noise it makes.

i have mailed intel about this.
man i'm really scared. i dont want to burn this setup. i've already sold my a64 system 🙁.
is it worth removing the thermal goo on the hsf and going for as5?
after a little testing i've discovered that after peaking around 60, the fan picks up to about 1500 and temp comes down to 52. coretemp maxes out at 70 under full load (this time prime95) and stays there.
i've also read that the heat-sink-spreader is actually bow shaped (bowing downwards). this is normal according to intel as it helps contact between the hs and cpu!

one other thing: i reseated the hsf on the cpu. there was a thin layer of thermal paste spread onto the cpu as well as the heatsink base.

another thing: using intel's TAT (thermal analyser tool) if i throttle my cpu to 667mhz my core temps remain exactly the same! no changes what so ever.

CPU Temp=52.8
Cpu Fan=984
Mobo temp 44, 43, 50- Why three values?
ICH temp=63 (this number is completely static in the bios while the others fluctuate a little. Maybe that means it's not accruate. ) Is the chipset temp? Sorry for dumb questions.

At least this shows that Intel trying to improve this product.

I looking forward to flashing this myself, I looked at the readme and I can't believe the number of bugs they fixed in this release.

The ICH is the southbridge chip which is the I/O controller, i.e. controls SATA drives, USB, LAN, PCI slots, etc. If you are just looking at the temps in the bios, I can see where the temps would be fairly stable since most of those devices are fairly idle at that point.

The MEH (MCH) is the northbridge chip which is the interface to RAM and the PCI Express x16 slot.

I am not sure why there are three temps, if you look at the thermal monitoring diagram which is on page 35 of the manual, they only show a single sensor besides the CPU/ICH/MCH ones. I could have sworn I saw the other locations in a different diagram but I can't remember where.

Can't wait to check my own machine for the temps, I have been wondering how hot the case has been getting.

 
I tried to flash to this bios and had to do a recovery bios back to the previous version. Tried it again using the other methods and no luck, the computer would not boot into Windows. As soon as the bios was reverted back, the computer worked. They fixed a lot of bugs, but for me they caused a huge bug ie dead computer bug.

I'm pretty sure it does switch voltages. My memory can now run at 800MHz just fine.
 
i hooked up a old cooler master temp and fan controller.
cpu fan rpm = 2600
core temp idle = 47/47
load under TAT 100%= checking.... 70C
air temp = 27.5

so things are better than before, not ideal, but definitely better than before!
 
I'm confused -- the updated BIOS posted at the top of this page is compatible with the MB that this thread is about (DP965LT)?

yes it is. if u download the release notes, it mentions both The dp965lt and dg965ry mobos. u can select ur own mobo and it will point to the same bios.

I just got the bios off of intel's page for the dp965lt..

If you enter bios setup it says what speed your memory is at on the first page. You can change the speed under chipset settings.
 
I'm going to build my system using this motherboard in a day or two, and I've noticed that depending on where you go on Intel's Download Center there seems to be two versions of the INF Utility that should work with this board. On the page for the motherboard itself there is version 8.0.1.1002 dated 5/31/2006. On the Intel 965 Express Chipset Family page however, there is version 8.1.1.1001 dated 8/21/2006 which says it works with the P965 chipset, which I assume means that it should work with this board also. Obviously the newer version would seem to be a better choice, assuming that it does in fact work with this board. So, has anyone successfully used the newer version or has everyone been using the version dated 5-31-2006?

ICH temp is also 63.00 here and totally static. Clearly it is not connected...

The CPU fan speed is correct, or if it isn't the problem is with the fan. I connected a 3 pin fan whose characteristics are known to the CPU header and the speed reported was correct.


I think there are 3 on-baord temperature sensors on the mobo; plus on die sensors in the CPU MEH and ICH chips.


My temperatures are similar to yours - all implausibly high.

It seems that the cpu temps are more accurate in "core temp" than in the bios.

I wonder if the desktop utilities would be functional after upgrading to the newest bios?

Did anyone get a manual with this mobo? Intel is a good company but it's so out of line to ship a mobo without utilities, drivers and a manual. Despite these oversights, this is a good stable board. One good sign, it sells out within 2 days on newegg meaning the demand is good. I kinda figured there would be a pdf. manual on intel's website but I cant find it.
One last thing, has anyone found a version of cpu-z that displays all memory info on this mobo? Version 1.36 halfway works, not displaying all data.

This mobo doesnt come with a printed manual .one comes on the CD that comes with the board. One is also available on intel's website. if u click the "support" button in the mobos page, it shows a link to the manual.

For me CPU-Z works fine, but i'm currently using only one stick of dd2-533 ram.

if u search for desktop utilities on intel website. it lists a version 3, which will be available for download on sep 15, (it's going through validation, i think they just put it up there to calm us users down :|)
 
Now that some of the bugs have been addressed, I am considering ordering this motherboard when it restocks at Newegg. However, the Crucial 1.8 volt memory that everyone says works well in this board is amazingly expensive, especially for such lax timings.

There's 1.9 volt 800 Mhz memory out there that is cheaper and offers better timings, but I am reluctant to order it without knowing if it will work. Does anyone have any first-hand experience to confirm that a particular brand of memory will or won't work?

The release notes on the new bios were cryptic in some respects. I did not see anything that explicitly said "now supports 1.9 volt memory" but one of the more cryptic entries in the release notes might have been a reference to such a change. Do we have any confirmation from Intel that this new bios DOES support 1.9 volt memory?

Intel Tech support told me that this bios was going to automaticaly select 1.8 or 1.9V.

Jazzpicker reports that his 800Mhz RAM now works when it didn't with the prvious bios.


So it seems probable that the board now supports 1.9v RAM.


But nothing is for certain.

I'm not a fan of corsair but bought 2 gigs of Corsair XMS2 Twin2X2048-6400" DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) and it works just fine but the price is going up daily. Today $284.00 - $40 rebate.@ newegg. ZZF has the same for $276.00+ free shipping -$40 rebate.
The same Ram was about $30 cheaper a few days ago.

Kingston "KVR533D2N4K2/2G" DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)works fine too. $199 @ newegg /2 gigs
Intel reccomends Kingston.

I've tried both and can notice a difference with the corsair being faster. I can run games wide open with the corsair and notice a little slower performance with the kingston..

PS: CHeck ZZF, the mb may be in stock there. THey are hard to catch at newegg.
 
Just did the bios flash and checked my temps, pretty much the same as what everyone else has reported +- 3 degress or so. I did try running an intensive app (Oblivion) for a while to heat things up, and when I went back in and checked the temps were pretty much the same, so I am not too concerned about them. I am definately not having the problems some people have reported where the temps steadily increase on the CPU even when idle.

The only thing that really concerned me was that it reported only 1.26 volts on the 1.5 volt rail. That, plus other reports of ripple issues with the series of powersupplies that I have (OCZ GameXStream, I have the 600W), worries me a little even though things seem ok now.

That, plus after the flash I am now having the windows shutdown problem (XP hangs on shutdown) reported earlier, I didn't have enough time to try and fix it but I think it is a combination of the network adapter being disabled and bios power management/state transitions.
