nah, that bermuda high should be strong enough to keep the cane away from florida (maybe not the panhandle), but it looks like it might land in the same place ivan did. (it may got to cat 5, the water is so warm in the gulf). also note off the coast of africa, there is a swirly disturbance that is going to form into a storm.

Yup.. With all the scare tactics the local media is putting us through (I live in Tampa as well), I have gleaned that the probability of Tampa taking a DIRECT hit is astronomical.

JUST BRING IT!

I've been here almost 30 years, and never had a REAL hurricane hit.

You're an idiot. What people don't seem to realize is that while the hurricane itself may not be "that bad" the stuff that comes with it can be. My parents left the east coast of FL for *orlando* (which is smack in the middle of the state) for one of the storms last year, and their car has gouges in the WINDOWS and paint from roof shingles flying around in the wind. There are still hundreds (thousands?) of homes in palm beach and port charlotte that, 9 months later, still have blue tarps where their roof should be. Some friends of mine had no power for 3 weeks. That SUCKS.

After taking a close look at the damage etc I realized that when a hurricane hits, there is really only a 3-10 mile wide path of "you REALLY don't want to be there" - however, the effects of being near that path can easily last for days/weeks.

I'm not advocating panic, but it is foolish to dismiss the impacts of a large hurricane.
 
I am leaving from tampa to go on vactaion to alsaka and I will be slying through houston on sunday morning. I am hoping it doesn't dealy my flight, and if it doesn't I hope to get some pretty good pics of the cane from the sky.

I agree the media here in tampa is horrible with hurricane coverage. They just don't have enough to talk about so they figure they can scare us about a hurricane and get us to watch.
 
Either way, I believe Florida is going to feel some major effects of Dennis. We shall see, I'm ready at work and I'm ready at home. Bring it on biatch. 😀
 
Dennis is now a Category 4 Hurricane, with winds of 135 mph. It is forecast to weaken to category three as it moves over cuba, and remain at category 3 stage until it makes landfall in the U.S.

I'm just going by what the hurricane center tells me. 🙂

Edit: They're saying the wind shear it will encounter in the Gulf will inhibit further strengthening.
 
The Frenzy is going to start getting crazy here soon. Home Depot and Lowes are already packed all the time. I have lots of supplies - I'm going to spend saturday afternoon getting my yard ready for it (securing loose items, etc). Sounds like this coming week is going to be fun 🙂

T.S. Cindy cranked up as it neared the shore here because the water is so warm.

Hurricane Andrew did the same thing in 1992.
 
Even if it only hits the panhandle we are going to get some stiff winds and lots of rain.

It's interesting to note that when the abominable Florida Building Code was instituted via politics, FL panhandle legislators insisted on changes to avoid designing heavier structures in that area.

Soon the code will change again, I don't believe they'll argue with the professionals.

BTW - most of the country should be designed for 90mph wind and isn't; coastal areas are higher, including places like NJ.

Dennis has followed almost the exact same path thus far as Hurricane Charley did last year. Back then they said it would remain a weak cat 3 when it came ashore, and just only hours before it hit it was almost a cat 5.

it's funny watching the weather people. they aint any better at forcasting where these things are going than they were last year, or the year before, or 10yrs ago.

Dennis has followed almost the exact same path thus far as Hurricane Charley did last year.

Back then they said it would remain a weak cat 3 when it came ashore, and just only hours before it hit it was almost a cat 5.

The highly paid weather folks don't seem to be taking into account the nearly 10 degree difference in the water temp from the coast to 30 miles out.

The water is so hot west of the mouth of the misssissippi that there is hardly any fish at all because the oxygen level is so low in the warm bath water.

Wahh. Our dry season this year began in Mid June, and we won't get any rain again until late October-early November. So there. 😛
 
Well my wife lost her '93 Nissan 240sx last year to the last Hurricane. (Big/Huge tree branch fell on it) We bought a '04 Mazda6i in place of it 1 week later. Insurance gave us over 2,000 which surprised me. They just totaled it out. We had just put $750. in a total brake job though!

No dmg otherwise but I really don't like Hurricanes now. You always think it won't happen to you and then it does (that was me) I know I know, you always hear that!!!!!!
Just wish My wife, me and the four kids (our cats) luck with this one!...................... Just West of Orlando.
