In term of visual and audio, the orignal HOMM is the most memorable. I can still rememer the music of the Knight town, the sound peasants make while dying, the "hamburgular" rogue, the funny looking cyclop. But it was poorly balanced, the dragons are too strong.
Game play was very well balanced in HOMM3. But starting from HOMM2 graphics started to get very generic, nothing stylish and original like the first HOMM. HOMM4 looked the worst IMO and I didn't bother to play it becuase of poor reviews. I'm hoping HOMM5 will not disappoint and bring some good memory back.

FWIW, there's a Might & Magic FPS in the works. Will be one of the first FPCs.....First Person Caster games I know of. Uses Source too.

I like the looks of the game. I wasn't a big fan of the series because I perfer the D&D rules set in the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series but I'm willing to try something new once I get bored with WoW. :)

DARK MESSIAH OF MIGHT & MAGIC

Ubisoft, one of the world?s largest video game publishers, announces the development of Dark Messiah of Might & Magic®, a new first-person action game for the PC, powered by an enhanced version of the Source? Engine, the award-winning game technology Valve created to power Half-Life®2.

Developed by Arkane Studios, the team behind the critically acclaimed Arx Fatalis game, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic® puts players in a first-person perspective, allowing them to immerse themselves in the legendary Might and Magic® universe as never before. It is also the world?s first fantasy action game to feature a complete first-person combat system. It takes full advantage of the Source? Engine?s exceptional technological enhancements in areas such as character animation, advanced AI, real-world physics and shader-based rendering.

Ubisoft acquired the Might and Magic® brand in 2003 and Dark Messiah of Might & Magic® is the second title Ubisoft will be launching as it restores this famed franchise to glory. Dark Messiah of Might & Magic® is scheduled for a summer 2006 release and will be shown for the first time at the Games Convention in Germany on August 17, 2005.

It's not the "Might & Magic" RPG but Heroes of Might and Magic Turn Based Strategy :) And you can play WoW for atleast half a year before this is released.

Didn't they make a FPS M&M game called Legends of Might and Magic that was about as good as moldy butter?

all the last M&M titles were bad, the company was as innovative as the wheel, and they lacked funding to actually produce the wheel. So for that I can't say I'm sorry that Ubisoft is running the show now.

HOMM2 is till the best IMHO, I re-played it a few months ago. It has the best variety/imbalance between towns (imbalance as in : rushing barbarian town vs long build strong units warlock)

This is why I'm a little worried over H5, it has the same "every unit has one upgrade" generic (read : boring) system as H3.
In H2, some units had no upgrade, while dragons had 2, and upgrades did mean stg...
Moreover, they was a GAP between 6th level unit and 1st lvl ones which really made the 6th level special (much more linear in H3).

H3 still is a good game, though, especially with WOG.

As for H4, I didn't think it was a bad game, some nice gameplay changes and elements, ok graphics, all ruined by abysmal enemy AI !

Bump for dungeon interview, although this was what I though most interresting:

What will be the role of the Dungeon faction in the story of Heroes V?

Their role in the story is rather big, but that?s all I will tell for now. I?m not trying to tease you; I just don?t want to spoil first impressions and the fun you will have from exploring the story of Heroes of Might and Magic V. Just believe me, as each faction has its unique features, each also has its own unique role in the plot of the game, making the story fuller and brighter.

:D
