Not even the same thing. The 580 is a true single gpu. The 6990 is a microstuttering crossfire card. There is a premium for the best single gpu. Most people don't want the extra heat/power a sli/crossfire setup requires and we also don't need the stuttering that comes with it.

And btw the 460 sli is not equivalent to a 580. When they can guarantee the stuttering is gone 100% and the 460 sli can get the same minimum fps then it could be called equal. What it comes down to is how does the games play when you start playing and in that regard 460 sli is not even in the same league as the single 580.

I have to agree with this...TBH, Im really surprised AMD fell over on this...They usually make great hardware, but it looks like they got sucked into the all out single card crown, and with all the time they had to make it, they missed a triple slot cooler exhausting the ALL the heat out the case!!
I have to say that the 5 monitor setup looks BOSS though!, will that work now with normal CF, or is that exclusive to the 6990?

They went for ultimate performance at all costs. They really want the performance crown. They are thinking only of the enthusiasts - the same guys who liked GTX 480 for its performance - damn the noise!

Actually, the Stock HD 6990 (375W TDP) is quite nice and it is not loud nor noisy. But then AMD wanted us to test the ASUM performance mode.

i think it is expensive. A 6890 would probably be plenty for most gamers and it would still beat GTX 580 performance for around $500

i am really looking forward to Nvidia's dual-GPU card.
I agree, it looks like that was AMD's goal - two 6970 GPU's on one PCB at all costs. I'll offer the same argument now that I offered when the GTX 480 came out - why? When the GTX 480 came out, it might have been 10-15% faster than a 5870 for a lot of headache and waste. Furthermore, a 5850, about 50% of the cost at the time, could be overclocked to equal or surpass the GTX 480's performance. Here, again, is a no-holds-barred approach to performance, but with the same loss of focus. I can grab two 6950's, unlock them, and overclock them the same for $500, less noise, and maybe better power consumption.

Having both GPU's on one card can be helpful in some situations (it's the reason I got a GTX295 back in the day), but that's still very niche. I guess I find it amazing how much time and money these companies are willing to waste on these niche products. Are they really getting a decent return on investment?

I'm interested to see what NVIDIA can come up with. I'm not holding my breath for a miracle simply because they don't have much to work with either; even less, I'd say, due to Fermi being more power hungry. Stranger things have happened though .

I was just reading the Guru3D review.

It says here:
For each dBA test we close the PC/chassis and move the dBA gun 75 cm away from the PC. Roughly the same proximity you'll have from a PC in a real-world situation.

So how many of these reviews tested the sound on an open testbed?

They also had this to say.
For the card in IDLE we measure 38 DBa which hardly can be heard really. And fully stressed... 46~47 DBA. Now that might sounds (and is) on the high side but I really do need to make a remark here. Explaining sounds pressure is a hard thing to do. Sometimes 44 DBa can be annoying and 46 pretty acceptable. That's the case with the R6990 as you are not hearing the fan whirring or anything, no it's pure airflow that you hear. So while the card obviously is noisy, it's not at a frustrating level.

So its no FX5800. But yeah, its still loud.

Hardware Canuks are saying its just as loud as 6970 crossfire, but runs cooler. Interesting results no doubt.

funny how different sites can have vastly different results for sound, heat and power consumption. tomshardware and bit-tech both considered the card to be annoyingly loud.

I'll throw in performance while we're at it. The ranges are pretty wide, especially in comparing AMD and NVIDIA.

Can someone simply help me answer the question. I rephrased it so there is no arguments and thread derailments.
Thanks

Well the thread is about 6990 reviews. Perhaps he can make a thread to speculate about unannounced nvidia cards. Or just bump one of the many that already exist ?

I don't have a problem someone with bringing it up, but he always blows it out of proportion.

I understand you are rabid AMD fan mate, however try to keep a clear head. The 590 does exist, its just not released yet, 2nd, happy is trying to deduce what speeds a 580 dual core would have to be to match the 6990 as its a given it wont be full speed...This is not a thread hijack ok?
