Official Haswell-E thread

OK, here's a question:
In Haswell-E, are they going to keep some of the VRMs in the CPU package, just as with regular Haswell?
I'm asking because I remember the reviews of the the first X79 boards and their thermal problems with the VRMs.

Waiting on the official overclock numbers on the 8 core CPU to hit the streets along with the CPU. X99 will hit the shelves in about a month along with ddr4 RAM. What CPU will you get and why?

I will be moving from a 3930k, That CPU feels so old because, I have had it so long. I will be giving my 3930k to the wife and making the move to x99.

I'm keeping my 3930k for at least a year since it's "under water" and I have a ton of $$ sunk into custom water cooling. I've only had it for @ a year and a half.

The neat thing is that my cpu water block (Swiftech Apogee HD) should work on the X99 socket.

I'm interested in how the heat management will be handled in the Haswell-E especially the 8 core 5960X.

Yeah X99 is going to be compatible with whatever block mounts you're using on X79. The only expense I expect is a new block for the motherboard and the (large) time investment it takes to tear down and rebuild a loop.

we had a thread here years ago called "when is ram too much" where it was clear that having way too much ram (i think over 16Gb at the time) was (slightly) detrimental to performance, as it made the memory controller work a lot more.
64Gb ram is probably useless and bad for anyone not actually using more than 32Gb at the time.
(and if you do go over 32Gb on a desktop you have to tell me how)

I was regularly using all 32GB when utilizing multiple VMs, transcoding over media server, and using photoshop. I would rather have more than I need and use any extra for caching and not have to worry when I do need the extra RAM to import/process a bunch of 24MP photos. Really want 8 cores to support 2x 2C VMs, 2C PMS/transcoding and leave 2 for general purpose. Give 8GB to each VM, 16GB to PMS and 32GB for local user. Perfect. 🙂

the 5820k has to be the choice for gamers. ATOT test results show nearly zero performance loss with SLI @ 1080p. Obviusly we need to see 1440p/ 4k benches to validate, but so far for the price you cannot beat the 5820k if all you care about is gaming.

And for those lucky few with a micro center nearby can snag this cpu for $299

Holy crap, dmoney is right. That's just $20 more than a freaking 4790k. I mean, you'll need an x99 mobo and DDR4 but wow.

Look at the size of that memory controller! It must be half a billion transistors in itself. It is such a waste to have all those transistors, and yet none of them are used to govern the OS storage space. Talk about a serious flaw in PC design...

Sadly, the results are in; DDR4 is all but useless. It offers nothing measurable to justify the obsolescence of DDR3. In 3 years we're going to have millions of sticks of DDR3 sitting in a drawer rotting for no good reason at all. Well, I for one swear to never buy DDR4 or a DDR4 system until at least 2018.

Micro Center was playing it sneaky sneaky. They lowered the prices on DDR4 memory, X99 motherboards, and the Haswell-E CPUs right on release day. Picked up the 5960X for $899 and the Gigabyte Gaming G1 Wifi for $349. Their DDR4 memory also had around a $50 price cut.

You guys have it good with Microcenter. The 5960X ran me $1150 at newegg. Even accounting for US to CAN exchange that was robbery. $899 US is about $980 CAN.

Just looking through the old e-mails; DDR3 triple channel kits did drop significantly in the first month.

I picked up the i7 920 stuffs 6 months after launch; at that time memory was within a few dollars a gig of DDR2.

Hopefully the same thing happens.

In fairness, neither did DDR3 nor DDR2 over their immediate predecessors when they first came out. It's more a matter of DDR4 being able to hit higher speeds in the long run, and its lower power usage should come in handy for laptops and server farms.

I worked on the power delivery system for Haswell-E. I'm pretty excited - it's the first CPU that I've worked on in a long time that I'm excited to put into my home rig. It was also a pretty fun design project to work on.

I still think that an i7-4790k would be better for gaming than the i7-5820k in my opinion and cheaper because of the cheaper motherboards and cheaper RAM. I saw a review that showed the 4790k beating the 5820k in gaming benchmarks that were CPU bound otherwise there was not much difference, but in the heavily threaded benchmarks showed the 5820k beating the 4790k. Besides, with that logic you are using about no performance loss at 1080p with SLI, I can say that you are not really losing performance in gaming going with a quad core CPU instead of a hex core CPU, especially if the quad core CPU is clocked much higher by default.
