And man, what does it take to get in Kate's pants? I have her up to 93%, and she still shoots me down! Meanwhile I have Kiki (LawChick) who bitches at me about my "other whores" every time I pick her up, she gets into a screaming match with me outside of a bar because I was apparently looking at another girl, and she'll spread her legs whenever I want it. She's really a bitch. But apparently she can make my wanted level go away.

You can't sleep with Kate, it's not even worth trying. I dated Carmen for pretty much the whole game because she could heal me over the phone. It saved me from having to run around looking for food.

It sounds like I got lucky with the abandoned hospital mission. I just walked out and drove away when the cops came. I somehow managed to get out without being seen and didn't even get chased, and didn't kill a single cop.

Ah damnit. I liked her red hair.

so I read elsewhere that the heal function for Carmen is bugged for some people. I have PS3, have access to her heal ability, and it has yet to work for me when I try to use it.

she just mumbles some shit about reducing my breathing, heart rate, etc...and nothing happens. I've tried stopping for a bit to see if that triggers it; but nada.

I remember one time I was with Playboy X and I was about to start a mission and I was trying to steal a car and the driver gets out and starts a fight with me then playboy pulls out his gun and shoots the driver for me and says, "Are you trying to get us arrested man?", it was a pretty awesome moment..

My favorite mission so far was one for the first man Niko Looks for where he has you ride through the park on the scooter.. It's fun watching all the people in the park run away from the scooter and the gun fire and the euphoria really shines in that mission..

I've noticed that when I park a police car in my reserved spot at the 2nd safe house, a policeman will regularly spawn on that street. He often arrests someone, puts them in MY police car, and drives off. I can actually take him out and steal back my car without gaining a wanted level, but it's annoying to come back from a save and see my police car gone.

also, when dropping Roman off from a, uh...date, if you park too close to wall or car for him to get out, he'll just punch Niko, scream "this car is mine!" but then get out on you side and disappear. I still laugh when he does that. I assume the other characters do that too (this works at the second hidehout. if you have a car parked on the waypoint, you essentially have to let him out right next to that car to trigger his exit. If he is on the side of that car, he cant' get out)

I hope the DLC expands on Niko's life beyond the main story whether it would be with (insert person that doesn't die here) and opens up buying property and or businesses.

The business building missions from Vice City would seem appropriate to me.

Well, you guys are much farther along than I am. I haven't been spending a ton of time with the game... maybe an hour or two each night, some nights none at all. I'm savoring it. First mission I finished last night was the one at the abandoned hospital. I had been delaying it, because it gave me trouble the first time and it wasn't a particularly fun mission. On a previous attempt I had gotten the drugs with ease, but got blowed up on my way to the P&S.

First attempt last night I decided to scope it out a bit more. I killed the first few guys, then ran around the building. Saw a ladder in the back, climbed up and killed a few guys on the second floor, then failed to find a ladder that would allow me to use this as an escape route. That would have come in handy. Looked around some more, saw a ladder leading to the water and a short swim to Broker (?). I parked a car by the door and went in. Did my business, got the drugs, fought my way back out (those SWAT guys go down easily, but they keep getting back up!), and big surprise my car was gone. That's one of my complaints about this game - when I park a car for a mission, it's usually gone when the mission ends. I decided to run around back and jump in the water. I swam across to Broker and got under a pier where I couldn't be seen. Unfortunately the cops won't leave you alone until you're out of their circle, so I had to move on. Eventually I got killed while trying to find a car to steal.

Third attempt went better. I got the drugs and more or less just ran out of the building while shooting any SWAT guys that got in my way. Ended up getting out with about half armor and full health left. I stole the truck outside the building, but made a wrong turn and ended up going down a dead end street. The cop cars were PILING UP, running into each other and into me. I pulled some Barry Sanders moves and squeezed my way out. They gave chase, I tried to figure out how to drop grenades but I couldn't remember how to switch weapons in the car. As I'm driving through Algonquin, a strange thing happened - there were NO CARS on the streets. I don't know if the massive police presence caused it or if it was a glitch, but there was no one in my way. Still I couldn't outrun the police in my Bobcat pickup truck, so when it started smoking I took off on foot. Somehow I got far enough away that they couldn't see me, and I stole another car. Then I realized that since I stole the car without being seen, they didn't know I was driving it. Cops drove right past me with lights flashing. I just got out of their range, and voila. Not one of my favorite missions.

When given the choice to kill one of two guys, I killed the one with the nicer apartment. I never liked the "I'm going to be the next Donald Trump, but I'm going to be a thug criminal to get started" image anyway.

I liked that mission... I took a tour helicopter to the abandoned hospital and landed it in the parking lot at the yellow mission indicator. Went in cleaned house and killed every SWAT guy in the hospital on the way out. There were some police shooting at me in the parking lot but i ran to the chopper and flew away into the sunset.

i got it a week later than most, some I'm behind compared to others, as well.

I recently finished this mission too--I actually just ran straight out the front when the SWAT showed up, jumped in my car, and sped away. first time I couldn't lose wanted level, 2nd attempt...an unfortunately placed grenade blew up in my face when SWAT showed up...(which reminds me: the controls in this game are absolutely ATROCIOUS. frustration levels sometimes approach those form the days of Kid Icarus, and such...)

as for missing cars, this is annoying. although, I have noticed that my vanishing cars sometime re-spawn across the street, or around the corner, properly parked. I tend to park in the middle of the street, lengthwise. (I try to be as much of an asshole as I can when playing any GTA game 😉)

I also just discovered that those reg glowing bird things are this game's version of packages, and they need to be shot. waiting for a an online map to be published before going after them, though....

Also seems that killing playa X is the way to go. as depressing as Dwayne is (I actually laugh when he starts yapping about his emo life), his benefit is 2 heavily-armed homies that back you up when you call for them.

the main annoyance is the effing cellphone. I hate that I'm on the other side of the world, and damn Brucie or Roman call me once again, looking to get wasted or something. ignore them long enough, and you lose their favor. (and freaking Roman still spawns way the hell away to pick him up, but wants you to drop him off in the second safe-house...what the hell is his problem?) does turning phone to silent mode also shut off favor loss? I've noticed that favor will drop even if you don't reject a call. it will just drop, and you get a notice.

The way to deal with the cell phone 'dates' is to hail a taxi to get wherever you need to go. The game does not count for the time the taxi takes to get from one destination to the other as long as you skip the driving sequence (press A for xbox) In fact, taxi should be your primary form of transportation if you're lazy because it works out so well. Sure I steal cars every now and then but the majority of the time, I use the taxi system to get wherever I need to go.

I think I'm done with this game for a while. I completed the story and most of the side missions last week. I have to complete the Stevie car collecting missions (24 left to do), Brucie's races (13 to go), meet the rest of the random people, find all the birds and hit all the ramps. I have no motivation to complete these.

The multiplayer is greatly disappointing. Especially with DM and TDM. How is this fun when you can see your enemies on the mini-map? WTF is the point? Too many people driving in reverse in the Races and the GTA Races just turn into a DM. Hell, any multiplayer game eventually devolves into a DM.

half the game is stealing cars and running into shit though....I just can't play GTA unless I'm plowing into pedestrians, responding to people honking at me by stopping, getting out, putting a cap in their ass, or racking up 5 stars in a grenade-spewing ice cream truck.

most of this shit happens on my way to every damn date...don't know why..... 😉

on a side note, i find the baggage truck at the airport a most effective way of avoiding the cops. (or at least prolonging a 5-6-star chase) it accelerates like a sonofabitch, is super easy to control, turns on a dime, and if it flips, it just rights itself. also, it's hard for the cops to hit you. they often just run into each other. plus, it's great for the Lulzzz.

I don't think that's it. I stopped dating her and used it 4 or 5 times while doing all of the vigilante and most wanted missions.

The more and more I play this game, the more an more I realize that all the "mainstream" game reviewers are full of SHIT.

This game is good, but is is NOT Perfect 10 or 5/5. I have many complaints so far, but my major beefs:

1) Niko is a follower, not a leader. All he does is go around and run errands for people and is easily talked into doing shit. I thought he was supposed to be a hardass, not a glorified Golden Retriever.

2) Niko is always bitching about "I need money" yet there ain't shit to buy other than a few fancy suits and guns/ammo that you can regularly pickup off dead guys.

3) No checkpoints for missions.

4) Controls/Camera are sloppy at best 75% of the time.

Granted, I'm only about 33% of the way through the game, but this shit is annoying.

1.) Agreed, to a point. I'm more than half way through and he has yet to change. I hope near the end the story points to Niko turning out to damn near own the place.

2.) Not sure if you're annoyed with him claiming he needs money, or that there's not much to spend it on. Or both. Either way, the former doesn't bother me at all but the later does.

3.) The only mission I've felt I needed one was the 3 leaf clover mission. Other than that they're fairly short and easy to accomplish. Wish when it would replay it'd skip the initial "drive to this desination" part when there is one.

4.) On foot controls are sometimes awkward when in tight places, but the camera is easily controlled by you so if it's a problem you need to turn the stick to a better place yourself.

Definitely not 100%, 10/10 or whatever... but I've played all GTAs and this is the first I've purchased immediately after trying. And also the first where I wanted to do all the missions and NOT just enable all weapons and go nuts.

A few things I'd like though:

1.) Multiplayer minigames. I like pool and bowling enough to play them over live. Darts sucks, but the other 2 are great.

2.) MORE minigames. It starts to feel like a grind keeping up with dates/friends because of the lack of shit to do. Minigolf seems like a no-brainer seeing as how it's right next to the first bowling alley, just not playable. They have poker playing on TV but no way to play it yourself which seems odd.

agreed. controls absolutely drop this game down a notch or two. so then...I give it 8.5/10

I read Anand's review after purchase, and he said some things that I've always been thinking, but have never seen in these online game reviews before. namely: story. most of the games that get high reviews these days get high marks for story. but hell, there really is nothing original about this. rehashed BS that we've seen repeated from GTA 3 to this one. the voice acting is great (better than what Final Fnatasy has put out), but the story is nothing remarkable.

further...this is not the evolutionary adaptation that GTA3 was. hell...how many of you played the first 2? (being a PC forum...probably more of you here than at GameSpot). GTA3 was to the previous franchise what Ocarina, or that FF2 game was to those respective franchises. GTA4, however, really isn't much better than San Andreas. both are better than Vice City for expanding on functionality, but nothing terribly unique and innovative to set them apart. (If anything...you could at least fly a harrier in San Andreas-parachute assault FTMFW!). As always, the graphics are lesser than its peers.

No doubt, the game is great and is fun as hell. a formula, that like any Bond flick, is fun to enjoy several times over.

but giving it 10/10?? I think, (sucks knowing this...) that the only 10/10 that Gamespot ever awarded was Ocarina of Time. and now...GTA4.

Clearly, this game is not to its genre and depth what Ocarina was to its. (hell, I never even owned an N64, or Ocarina....but it probably is the best console game of that generation...next to FF7?)

after that, maybe 7.5/10? not unique to the series--still the monotony (forced to keep up with pals at the most inconvenient BS times) and derivative GTA missions

oh yeah..Republican Space Rangers may just kick it back up to 8.5/10

hehe

the TV expansion is pretty funny; but in the end, you're just sitting there, watching stuff happen.

I'd rather read a real book.

While I agree with the opinions that this game is definitely not the 10/10 all reviewers are making it out to be, this quoted statement of yours is ridiculous to say. Especially when your next statement says that you never even played Ocarina.

GTA4 is by far the best of the genre IMO, and the depth of the entire game as a whole is amazing. But it doesn't deserve 10/10 status because of some technical flaws it has.

I beat it last night.

Curse the RockStar employee who put in that "Beat the story in 30 hours" achievement. I managed to do it in 29 hours and 15 minutes, but I think it really took away from the experience.

While I love Sandbox games, I'm not the kind of person that will go back and replay the story twice. So I figured if I'm ever going to get that achievement, it's going to be on the first pass through so I might as well give it a shot. I liked the story quite a bit, but I had to ignore so many phone calls from friends and barely got to check out the internet/TV/minigames that everyone else was trying out. Oh well, now it's time to go back and really explore the city with no time constraints.

Np 🙂 There's 2 on the first island (until a certain point...), 2 on the second, and 1 on the third.

The thing is, what game doesn't have technical flaws? Bugs are an inherent part of software, and with the high demand for eye candy I think we'll continue to see these flaws in some way or another in all games as developers try to squeeze as much as they can out of them. It seems like most people think a 10/10 should be impossible to achieve, because the standards put forth by everyone are nearly impossible to achieve by human developers. What matters is do these flaws significantly detract from the game? A lot of people seem to think they do, and that's reasonable. Obviously the reviewers thought the good far outweighed the bad.

Regardless, who cares? The game is either worth playing or its not. This one certainly is unless you are easily offended or not a fan of the genre. Numeric ranking systems are silly.

Besides, when you look at GTA:SA reviews (which are perfect or near perfect, not too far off from GTA IV), I'd say GTA IV is definitely worthy of better scores, as it has significantly improved in almost all areas. In order to accomplish this Rockstar had to scale back the focus, and trim away many of the fat bits that people enjoyed from GTA:SA, but I'd say it was worth it. It would be nice to see some more of those features (like buying property), but this is still one hell of a game without them.

well I've put a lot more time in it over the weekend. Still on the first island though. So far I've killed 340 people. 🙂

Michelle called me bitching the other day so I plan on murdering her tonight to see what happens.

I've gotten the driving down much better now and over all my skil lwith the controls has great improved.

Freemode multiplayer is so much fun but I don't understand why you can't trade/give weapons to your passenger. Thats weak.

Also why the auto-aim doesn't automatically lock onto enemies with weapons with in view then police. IT really should do this for you since the camera fucks up your perspective of where shots are coming from .

And my god a replay feature was not added to this game is a huge fumble.

So yeah this isn't perfect but this game is pretty fucking great.

EDIT: you should be able to stash weopons, armor, cash and cars in alleyways and things like that.

uh, I said that I never OWNED the system or Ocarina. I have certainly played it several times.

I'm not one to gauge my opinions merely on reviews.

I'm also not going to get into a pissing match over a video game, here 😉

by genre, I mean peers. The games released around it. It certainly sits near the top, but it doesn't stand out as others have. Plus, it's not as sweeping an update to the series as GTA3 was. that's pretty undeniable. It's been a slow evolution ever since it was introduced on PS2.

GTA3 was a phenomenom, spawning all sorts of derivative titles. by this point, the genre has gotten a bit stale. The game is still great, but it's that familiar kind of fun, by now. Not all that original 7 years later.

I thought San Andreas was a rather large leap in content. This one doesn't seem that far away from what San Andreas added.

yeah, I highly doubt that it is possible to kill her...as the other reply to this post suggests
