That's it--I did it. I took a peek at one of the gameplay videos and now my anticipation meter is through the room. It's almost unbearable.
This video is spoiler free and of only gameplay. No story or plot stuff revealed.
Its great just to see Niko running, driving and car jacking.
Some notes from the video:
- The framerate is rock solid and after seeing this video my worries are basically gone.
- There is some slight pop-in, but it's no different than previous GTAs and infact looks a bit better in this regard.
- Love the way Niko moves around.
- 00:20 seconds, love the car jack.
- 01:15 The SUV flipping off the road looks goddamn cool.
- 01:50, watch as the SUV that's being driven, loses control and slides across the medium slowly spinning and actually rips the grass from the dirt creating tire tracks. the tires independantly grinding and moving around. Euphoria looks fucking awesome.
- 02:10 Niko gets off the freeway and finds himself in a bit of a traffic jam. Tries to dodge the stopped cars but ends up hitting the back of one. Niko is spit out of the car (i think through the front windows?) and falls to ground. Gets up and is immediately attacked by the driver of the car he hit. Punches tinsue and Niko takes the guy down to a bloody mess. The stumbles from both characters from the punches is amazing. Seriously. Little amazing touches everywhere.
- 03:10 Carjacks a convertable by hoping in over the door and pushing the driver out.
- The car physics are incredible looking.

Well, after a post like that I cracked and took a peek. Makes me even more excited.
The car physics look good but still very "cartoony" like the previous GTA games. Granted this isn't GT but I would have liked alittle more realistic driving.

The quality isnt as good as the first one, but it's got some incredible stuff in it. I love the gunfight with the cops. You'll notice that one cop actually gets taken down and is lying on the ground not moving while Niko exchanges bullets with another cop. A min later, the cop gets up and wobbles, limping to a near by cop car trying to take cover. Its actually kinda sad as he's gunned down by Niko before reaching cover.
Also, later on, we witness Niko smashing a windows of a car to break in. Hot damn man...

I haven't read much about the game, so this may be old news, but based on that video it looks like:
1. Lock-on targeting is gone, and the game is more of a third person shooter like Uncharted?
2. It appears that you can take cover behind stuff? That'd be great.
And guys, give modeps a break. If he wants to know nothing about the game until it comes out, that's no reason to bust on him.

1. My understanding is that there is indeed lock-on targeting, although I don't think I've read specifics about how it works (i.e., if it is similar to Crackdown or just an improved version of what was already in place). Supposedly you pull the left trigger half-way to engage in free aim, and all the way to lock on. My initial thought (without having tried it) is that this may take some getting used to, and I'm not sure if I'll like it. It will probably be fine, though.
2. Yes, there is a cover system.
EDIT: Also, I'm just teasing Modeps in good fun. I am somewhat in the same boat (not wanting to know too much about the game), although I'm not able to resist morsels like these as much as he is, apparently.

Hmm, I wonder if they'll fulfill my in-store pickup at Midnight. I could always pick it up at Midnight and then cancel my in-store preorder. Of course, there's no way I'm going to Best Buy at midnight on a Monday/Tuesday. I'll wait until Tuesday after 5pm.

I was wondering the same thing. I know in the past games sometimes you'd hijack a vehicle, only to have one person not get out and run at their first chance of the car stopping, but I don't remember if they screamed or not.

I think that after watching those videos, I've decided not to take the day off next week. It looks like more GTA, so I'll tide myself over with that thought and save a vacation day. I didn't say anything about possibly leaving early though....

I just don't want to take a day off in the middle of the week.. if anything I'll take next Friday off
