Well, I am officially dumping D2OL. It randomly causes mad instability in my system when I play games. Lately it would randomly interfere with Mech 4 Mercenaries where it would crash the whole computer as soon as I closed Mechwarrior, sometimes (but rarely) it would happen in the middle of the game. BF1942 started crashing everytime a map was loading at ~40%.

I went a couple days thinking this was my ATI drivers but got so annoyed w/ BF1942 that I bothered to look at the WinXP minidump file. Sure enough there is a reference to Sengent in there. Following reaction: :| :disgust: :| :disgust:. I'm ditching this project now, I think I'll start up ECC2.

Um, okay.. as for me, when I play games, I always shutdown whatever client happens to be running, be it SETI, D2OL, F@H or whatever. My gaming time is for ME, and that means I get ALL the cpu cycles. 😉

I'd hate to think you're ditching a project 'cuz it doesn't play nice with your games.. if that were the case, I'd've stopped doing DC stuff a LONG time ago.

I play BF1942 and I have no problem with SETI running at the same time. Granted, SETI doesn't get much CPU power but it doesn't hurt the gameplay either. In fact, I've never had a problem with SETI and any game and I've been doing SETI for over 3.5 years.

😀

(I don't like turning off theDC, so I just keep upgrading until there is enough for both.... 🙂 )

srry to hear about the D20L probs. Check back sometime... they'll get it straightened out

I play BF1942 all the time with D2OL running and no problems...

What kind of errors are you getting? And my ATI drivers were giving me problems on that game until I updated them.

yeah, I have good luck with DF here.... my prodduction goes from ~1.67folds/second to ~0.50folds/second, but it's crunchin' man..... it's crunchin' 😀

so, uh, CrazySaint... who's leading that race thing anyway? (tee hee)

I noticed in Quake3 unless I shut the client down, I get 50 fps, then it goes to 150 fps, then 50 again.. it's really strange.. not good though. I always have to shut down. Before when I first started, I had the GUI, I had no problems.

What are all the SETI people going to run when its gone?? 🙁
I want in on the new RC5 that's going to be out. hopefully it's out before SETI is over.
I'd like to retire out of SETI with my 25K work unit certificate!!!!

I've never had problems with games while running DC clients. I run my clients at nice level 19 (the lowest priority), and there is no noticible impact on UT2K3's performance. I SSH'd in to my main rig from my laptop whilst playing a rather large instagib match with bots, and the DC clients (I run 2 to take advantage of both processors) were pretty much at 0% CPU usage.

I'm going to blame your instablity problems on Windows. 🙂

SETI@Home v2, of course! 😛

FWIW, I'm running Folding@Home, and it doesn't impact the minimal amount of gaming that I actually do.

I'll probably be split between SETI@Home 2 and the Distributed Folding project. Pretty much like I am now. 😉

SETI version 2?
well, news to me... 😱
i was thinking of running RC5-72
I ran RC5-64 before I started with SETI.
with SETIv2 does it start all over again like a new project?
I wonder if we can still use software like SETIstash and SETIspy with the new client? that would be freaking awesome.

Hey, at least I waited until after you posted in the thread this time! 😉

If you want to a project similar to D2OL that runs better and more reliably and with more options, try Find-a-Drug. It doesn't interfere with any software on my systems.

lol, what else to game with??? Consoles??? BAH!!! I like ego-shooters... and ego-shooters on consoles is probably one of the worst things to do (IMHO)... oh... and I like playing online 😀

Anyway... well, RC5-72 seems to have started or at least the beta test is running already... but I don't expect it to be running at RC5-64 speed (many seem to have moved off). Oh... and F@H is always a good project 😀 And I can recall a review where they tested that F@H has almost no impact on any software, so gaming is no problem... if you have enough RAM... anyway I feel better switching of the client while gaming 😀

F@H does need the RAM. I suggest 256MB for it plus basic applications in Windows 2000, though 512MB will give better performance overall for your system (I just upgraded, so I have first hand experience 🙂).

I've not had any bad experience so far with SB and any games that i've played so far, you may wish to give that a shot, and we're a small Team so you'll make a big impact 🙂

Confused

Having Mech 4 Mercs myself, I can tell you that 256Mb of RAM is barely enough for the game itself, at least on some of the big battles with 20+ 'mechs and a liberal sprinkling of aircraft blasting every which way. 384Mb+ is what I am recommending... and a 95-ton Gladiator with either 3 Rotary Autocannon5's and 3 flamers, or else 4 Clan extended-range PPC's and a large stack of heatsinks, depending on whether you like to fight face-to-face or at range 😀

For Grand Championships, a very fast Thanatos with LBX10 AC's, flamers and electronic countermeasures is probably even better than the bigger Gladiator, due to the difficulty of getting missile lock on it in a 16-mech melee.

I think Im going to change to SB part time when I cant be watching if the d2ol client is stuck or not. Like at nights and when Im at school and becouse of this SB will be my "main" project for the time being.
