The time has come. Get your screengrabs ready, and hold on tight! It's time for the

FRIDAY DESKTOP THREAD!

THE place to get a look at the way your fellow NEFs live, work and play!

</poor attempt at a gameshow-like intro>

Here are the ever-so-important links:

UXTheme lets you use new skins in Windows XP.
Coolmon and StatBar put system info on Windows desktops.
GKrellM puts a system monitor bar on UNIX desktops.
Dockapps are another way to get system info on UNIX, if your window manager supports them. Electrode uses these.
Transparent is a program that can remove the solid color backgrounds from desktop icon labels on Win95/98/ME/NT/2K, allowing your wallpaper to show through.
Rainlender puts a calender on Windows desktops.
Desktop Weather puts weather info on Windows desktops.
Pic hosting services: Skroob's Paulson's Adul's
Anyone who posts a drag-and-drop link will be dragged and dropped off of a 3-story building.

How to take a screenshot

Windows: Hit printscreen (not alt+printscreen or any other combo), then paste in paint, photoshop, etc. Then save as JPG or another browser-friendly format.
UNIX: Use The GIMP, ksnapshot, or the command import -window root filename.jpg.

Let's see yours! Please mark pics that can't be safely opened at work, or in the presence of parents or wife. It's hard to enjoy an FDT when you have to have your mouse on the 'close' button in case a pic of half-naked woman pops up. :frown:

Something new! Note the presence of a poll. When the day is over (Saturday 12:00 AM Anandtech time) I will add the names of everyone who posted their desktops today, and you can vote for the one you like the most!

Haha, no way. I replied first. :) Just happened to catch the thread right as I refreshed.

Edit: BTW, what is that in your case? An MP3 player or something? Looks nice, whatever it is.

actually, the first (and therefore default) choice will be the "results only" option, to eliminate the unfairness that comes from being the default choice. after that, it will be done in the order that the desktops were posted. in other words, me first. :D

I wonder how well fusetalk will handle a poll with 60+ choices...

every week i see somebody who has one like this and it makes me want to get rid of all the icons on my desktop... so get rid of them. and then 10 minutes later i miss them and have to go back and restore them.

do you like it better that way?

I like it a lot better this way. I've been iconless for well over a year now, I guess. I have the main things I use in my Quicklaunch bar (IE, Outlook, and explorer) and for other things I use somewhat frequently, I have in a Quick Links folder I made in the start menu. Right as I open it, it's there. I'm lazy, so I even programmed a button on my mouse (default was Forward in IE) to open the start menu. If I'm doing stuff around the computer, but not at the computer, like gaming or whatever, I'll leave Winamp on and leave the computer at the desktop. It's much nicer to look at when it's not covered in icons. It takes a little while to get used to not having them there, but IMO, it's much better without them.

Rallispec... YOU DIDN'T LIKE MAX PAYNE!!!!! Oh my... that sucks .... I thought the game was incredible.

We should have a desktop thread where everyone (mainly us desktop veterans) post the evolution of their desktops... it'd be kinda fun. I had a stage where I went iconless also. My desktop was like sterilized

Hey, can you give us a link to that wall? It'd look really nice on my new 17'' LCD.

As for my screen, just imagine a default KDE 2.2 theme. Didnt change anything yet.

Bah, I don't change my themes/desktop. Waste of time to me, especially since I don't spend much time staring blankly at my desktop.
