Well, I'm in a lab right now so no desktop for me, but I CAN answer your camera question for you.
Digital cameras work but using a very sensitive ccd which can "capture" the light that hits hit. However, unlike traditional film cameras, they are much more susceptable to heat and thus light. By using an 8 second shutter, you just kept it past where it can take a clean image, sorta like noise, but most similar to a hot pixel (in the literal sense).
As far as solving this... well, when you intend on taking a long shutter shot, try to avoid turning the camera on until it's time to take the photo. Just the heat emitted by the electronics of the camera can make a significant difference in quality. Otherwise, I guess you'll have to settle with a lower shutter speed for the ISO speed you have selected *shrug*
