OFFICIAL Free Software Thread

Definition

Free software means exactly that: FREE. Freeware and Shareware for Windows is what this thread is about. It is not free if it expires after X number of days. That is Trialware and doesn't count. Some free software will nag you to buy the full version or to simply remove the nag pop-up. This is also acceptable.

Posting Rules

Feel free to post free software and include links and a description. You can post requests for free software here as well.

Appropriate posting guidelines for Tech Sub-Forums is in effect and the thread will be monitored to ensure that no one spams or trolls this thread.

If a free software link expires, please notify us and it will be updated or marked as such.

Happy Posting :)

I guess I should at least post some free software.

FileSeek

This is a file search program. Pretty easy to use and it is totally free. There is a Pro version that costs money but the trial version is 100% free minus the pro features.

CPU-Z

Need to know the cpu details? Motherboard or chipset? The memory configuration of your PC? Then this free program is for you. They also offer other apps such as Temp monitoring, Performance monitoring and PowerMax to test cpu and gpu stability.

To add some software, here's a couple proprietary programs(NOT FREE!) that are are gratis...

Paint.net
https://www.getpaint.net/
Probably the best easy to use image manipulation for non pros

Foobar2000
https://www.foobar2000.org/
Music player that does everything. Not pretty out of the box, but you can make it your own through customization.

PortableApps.

The most popular portable software solution allowing you to take your favorite Windows software with you. It works in any cloud drive folder (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc), on any portable storage device (USB flash drive, memory card, portable hard drive, etc), or from your local hard drive.

400+ free software and counting.

Intel Extreme Tuning Utility:
(Tests CPU and RAM. I mainly use it to monitor temps after first installing a heatsink on a new build):
https://www.intel.com/content/www/u...s/intel-extreme-tuning-utility-intel-xtu.html

Unigine Superposition and Valley benchmark:
(Places an artificially high load on PSU, GPU, and CPU to test for stability. It is a demanding benchmark that will work your system harder than just about any video game out there. Some refer to it as a "power virus").
https://benchmark.unigine.com/superposition
https://benchmark.unigine.com/valley

CrystalDiskMark and CrystalDiskInfo:
(HDD and SSD benchmarking and drive health info):
https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskmark/
https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/

LibreOffice:
(Microsoft Office alternative). I've used this for several years now, and I think it's a great free option to use.

VLC Media Player:
(plays DVDs and other video formats).

  • Backup type: Minutely, Hourly, Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Manually.
  • Whether to include the suddirectories.

Advanced Renamer

This is free for personal use and is a cool batch renamer. It can be tweaked in lots of ways. I like it when I rip my dvd series and using the Import from TV Show function to get the names right.

Greenshot screenshot tool
Ultra VNC remote access
GIMP image editor

It would be of great help if all this software is listed in one post at the beginning of this thread. This way it would be easier for anyone that is looking for something to find it and for anyone that wants to contribute to avoid posting on something that is already there.

It's well-known, but I figured I'd put it on the list anyway. Blender is a great 3D modeling tool. You can do animations in it and all sorts of cool stuff.

Anti-Virus: Avira AntiVir is damn good

BatteryCare: Freeware that tells you when and how to calibrate your laptop's battery as maintenance, and also tells you its wear level

Anti-spyware: SpyBot-Search and Destroy has been around for decades. Very effective at sniffing out malware, registry entries, PUPS etc. Please donate to them if you like it.

Exact Audio Copy: Downloads data specific to your CD drive make and model in order for the perfect audio rips. Benchmark tool. You can also purchase a lifetime subscription to a CD recognition software (for meta data) for $8 or something.

Audacity: Audio recording from microphone, Windows, line-in etc.

WinCDEmu: Freeware emulator for disc images on your HDD (less intrusive than Daemon Tools)

Mozilla Thunderbird: Took me back to the days of Outlook Express on Windows XP - no bloat, no fuss, just simple e-mail client that comes with all the useful settings already set up with install. Please donate to them if you like it.

qBitTorrent: Probably the only torrent client out there that can search websites for you via plugins. I found some new sites through these plugins.

T-Clock lets you customize your clock appearance, has alarms, timers, enhancements, hotkeys and more. It takes up less than 2mb and uses minuscule resources. I like to see digital seconds on my clock and have no use for the date to show all the time. The font style, size and position is customizable. I use it to make the clock bigger and easier to read. The adjustments for the clock that Windows has offered over several platforms never addressed the way I wanted my clock to look. I don't want the bloat or need all that comes with GUI programs. I've used it for many years.

My clock looks like this
