15 day bump!!!!

wow.....already its halfway here from when I started the thread :)

btw, today I read in the paper that Chris Tolkien and his son aren't talking to each other because Christopher (literaly heir to his dad JRR, who basicly put together the Silmarillion out of his dad's notes) think the movies are a bad idea.

I can understand him objecting to Burger King and their figures, but the movies? I dunno...

its just a rumour I think...

I heard the same thing...wouldn't surprise me if it's true because Chris is trying to keep out of the public eye as much as possible. The movies could bring unwanted attention.

I feel kinda bad for the Tolkien family for all the crap they've had to put up with over the years, especially once the hippies adopted the LOTR back in the day. Supposedly the Tolkiens would get annoying phone calls at all hours of the night...like some tripped-out pothead convinced that pipeweed was a metaphor for marijuana and wanting to know if JRR "smoked the sh*t".

Yes the Tolkien family did not really support the movies. Peter Jackson approached them and asked if they (more specifically Christopher) wanted to be an advisor. He said no, unless he would have FULL control over everything. So nothing really happened...and now they don't like it because of all the attention they'll get. JRR's son is old now...in his 70s I believe...and he recently finished dedicating 25 years of his life to putting together his fathers rough notes and publishing things such as the Simarillion and the 12 volumes of The History of Middle-Earth...leave the poor old guy in peace!! :|

And JRR is probably rolling in his grave, but the movies were inevitable and he did sell the rights to them, so....

I'm just so happy a director like peter jackson got ahold of the project. I can't even comprehend how horribly butchered LOTR would be if some hollywood director like Michael Bay or Jerry Bruckheimer got ahold of it. Can you imagine? That would be depressing.

Moviefone didn't have any offerings in my area. Even today I was only able to find one theater with online advance sales.

Woot for 14 more days (13 and one minute really, 12:01am.)

Well, I finished re-reading The Hobbit. I had forgotten what a good book it was. I am a few chapters into The Fellowship Of The Ring now.

BTW, an interesting note for those that mock the Harry Potter books as being "written for kiddies," etc. Apparently the Harry Potter books and The Lord Of The Rings books have been rated for the same grade level of reading in elementary schools across the country.

<< Another major publication offers up a GLOWING review of the movie... :D:D:):):D:D >>

I have mixed feelings on that review.

The good news: She usually hates action or fantasy movies so it is very surprising to me that she is recommending LOTR so heartily. Also, she's a Tolkien virgin yet still had no problem catching on. :)

The bad news: I think Entertainment Weekly is owned by Time/Warner so I have to wonder whether she had orders from on high for this one.

At any rate, here is another good review.

I would be extremely surprised to have this confirmed. Can you provide a source?

The "reading level" speaking strictly in difficulty based on factors like lexicon and sentance structure is not at all the same. I would catagorize HP on roughly equal, or maybe even higher, footing than The Hobbit, but the LOTR proper is certainly at a higher reading level.

Additionally, HP is without a doubt "written for kiddies," per the author and LOTR is, per the author, not - a matter altogether separate from what reading level it is considered by the educational establishment.

I was talking to the libarian when I was visiting my nephew's elementary school. They have certain books categorized for their reading programs, and I was examing the books listed on the charts.

Man, have you guys been watching the reviews of the movie? There hasn't even been a remotely negative one yet...including from people who have never read the books. I expected to see a lot of flak from the critics...but both the critics AND Tolkien fans like it...it's gonna be unbelievable if they somehow pulled that off :Q

I'm curious to know what organization produced this chart - I wonder if the library systems produced something that was based on rental demographics? That might work out.
Honestly, as an English-Ed grad, I'm much more qualified to judge a book's reading level based on internal evidence than a librarian - although a librarian would have much more information on local reading and check out patterns.

<shrug>
Its interesting at any rate.

Well, I went today to buy my LOTR tickets. I wasn't really optimistic, considering how late I was (some of the people lining up to buy the tickets, had been waiting 48 hours (!) outside the theater. When I walked out of the theater, I had huge grin on my face.

Gentlemen, you are looking at guy who has two tickets for Lord of The Rings, premier evening, best theater in entire Scandinavia (comfortable seats, awesome sound-system, huge screen etc.), ALMOST best seats in the theater! WOOHOO!!! I'm in geek paradise :D!!!!

Someone had reserved those tickets, but failed to claim them in time, so they were back for sale. And I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. It seems to be playing in several theaters when it premiers in that multiplex, ALL SOLD OUT! But I still managed to get tickets that are so good that some people would be willing to sell their own grandmother to get them!

19th december 2001, 5pm. here we come!

A few weeks ago, the following discussion occurred between me and my manager:

me: Is there a company holiday on Dec. 19th?
boss: Uh, no....why?
me: Duh!!! It's opening day for the Lord of the Rings movie fool!!!!!!
boss: Hrmm....well, no holiday sorry.
me: You suck.
boss: But there's no reason we can't take a personal day.
me: mmm.........lord of the rings.

I placed the order last week for 4 tickets for the 2nd showing at the best theater in the area. Myself, my manager, another guy we work with, and my wife will all be going. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

I was going to try to purchase a seat in the theater for the entire day, but I was told that wasn't possible.

On another note, my wife had expressed interest in reading the books many times, but she doesn't have a lot of time to read anymore. I bought her the UNABRIDGED books on CD (50 CD's for the three books) from Amazom, the reader is Rob Inglis. I began listening to them, figuring it couldn't hurt to "read" the book yet another time. The CD's are amazing. I've found myself taking the long way every where I go. I highly recommend them to any fan.
