I've never played Fallout before, but all of this talk about it is making me want to splurge on the fancy (and expensive) Amazon version :p.

Fallout 1 & 2 have been added to Good Old Games for $5.99 each, drm free.

I think they're also up on Gametap.

If you go to GoGamer.Com right now, there is about ten hours left on their 48 Hour Madness Sale. They have the Fallout Collection (Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel) together in a DVD case edition for $12.90.

So how many of you actually played WASTELAND back in the Apple IIE days? ;)

I should probably point out that the GoGamer deal includes Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, not just plain Fallout: BoS. I haven't played either game, but apparently FT:BoS is not bad, but F:BoS is terrible. Also, F:BoS is an original Xbox game.

Oops, sorry, meant to say Fallout Tactics: BoS. I didn't even remember that there was a Fallout: BoS game.

Damn it, that is the second time today I have accidentally edited my reply into a post instead of quoting the post. Sorry about that, AstroManLuca.

If I sneak up on someone (I assume this just means it says HIDDEN), will any shot (regardless of percentage), be a critical strike?

The Scrounger perk is your friend when it comes to ammo. Until then, conserve as much as possible with melee and getting up close for easy headshots. Also, don't be afraid to carry lots of weapons with you - more guns means more ammo that you can use. Keeping your guns in good repair can also be helpful if you can do it yourself - the shops charge an arm and a leg for the service, alas.

I think a lot of it is just genuine unfamiliarity with the system, though - I'm doing a second run-through right now, and I'm not finding ammo to be nearly as much of a problem.

I think of Scrounger as comparable to the bottle cap, +50lb and bartering perks. You get any 1 of them, and a second would only be unnecessary overlap. For example, if you get the 50lb perk, like I have, it means you can hump more stuff back to town to sell, which in turn leads to more money to buy more ammo. Same goes for more bottlecaps and better bartering skill. Scrounger you can pick stuff up in the field and rarely have to make return trips to town, but with fast travel, you may as well.

With all the dungeon exploring I'm doing, I feel as though Strong back along with a high repair skill is the best way to tackle dungeons. You can pretty much leave a dungeon with several near perfect suits of armor and energy weapons that sell for over 500 bottlecaps each... bottlecaps that ultimately become useless by about 20 hours into the game.

Yup. The perk "better criticals" and a high small arms skill will make you 1 shot super mutants with a hunting rifle. Pretty awesome stuff

Thanks for the tips everyone. I explored the elementary school and it was pretty scary. Ok dumb question, but is the person I am supposed to give the letter to at the school? It seems like it because the waypoint seems like it's flashing sometimes. I think the waypoint compass thing is kind of annoying/confusing to be honest :(

Heh. Yeah, I made the mistake of going into the Elementary School prior to going to Megaton after leaving the Vault. That was pretty tense because I was still learning the ins-and-outs of how to fight in Fallout 3 plus I was extremely low on ammo.

I think the letter you are talking about is from the blonde girl in Megaton? You have to go to Aref for that. Go to your world map and it should show you where Aref is.

I just left the vault and decided to look around a bit before going to Megaton. I found a school and was wondering is there a quest that will bring you back to it or is it just a "dungeon" type spot?

As far as I'm aware, it's just a dungeon. No associated quests. I'd recommend you tackle it _after_ Super-Duper Mart, since Springvale School is a little bit harder.

There actually is a quest item in the school - some sheet music in a desk (although there are several copies of that item in other locations, and you only need one). That, along with a Stradivarius violin in an abandoned vault, both end up going to an older woman named Agatha.

Tip: If you find an item called the "Soil Stradivarius," DON'T sell it to anyone! Hold onto it until you find Agatha. I found it before I knew there was a quest associated with it and ended up selling it to some guy in Rivet City. Still gave me the achievement for completing the quest, but I just got a few lousy caps instead of the real rewards (a unique Scoped .44 Magnum and a new radio station).

The level cap is too low.

I hit Level 20 going through Raven Rock (The Enclave).
So I got a bit more main story line to finish, and I've already hit the level cap.

On another note, the gatling laser rocks.
