  • -updated list 8-12-03 - a few went down a buck or two, added personal experiences
-updated prices to reflect after shipping costs to MD 20906
Just starting this out, feedback is welcome. Feel free to list other sites w/ cheaper media! As mentioned in the title, I used some basic rules when choosing what to copy down, so that I could save time:

1) 4x media
2) DVD-R - mostly cause of this article - but PLEASE do not start a DVD-R vs DVD+R war!
3) cheapest possible (i.e. extra features like glossy whitetop and such not included)
4) nothing over $2.00/disc
5) Be glad someone's actually collecting something - where else has this been done?

For questions about media and user experiences, check out DVDRhelp.com

Personal experiences w/ Sony's latest 510a dual 4xburner:
50 pack of DVD-Pro DVD-R 1x white top from supermediastore.com - 1 coaster
25 pack of TDK DVD+R 4x from target - no coasters (logo top, but not too bad)
10 pack of Fuji DVD-R from BB - no coaster (ugly logo top)

Good work. As an owner of a new 4x DVD burner, I'll be sure to check this thread often. So what technically makes this "official?" hehe, j/k.

How about one of anand's sponsors
shop4tech

Considering the free shipping, the prices look competitive:
Matrix DVD-R 4.7GB 1X-4X Bulk by shop4tech
50 $49.50

DVD-R 4.7GB 1X-4X Bulk by Leda
50 $59.50

DVD-R 4.7GB 1X-4X Bulk by piodata
50 $74.50

DVD-R 4.7GB 1X-4X Bulk by shop4tech
50 $82.50

DVD-R 1X to 4X 4.7GB (Authentic Ritek Media) Bulk by Ritek
50 $82.50

DVD-R 4.7GB 1X-4X Bulk by optodisc
50 $84.50

might be nice to include a quality of media type thing too, so people know whats "good" and whats "not". compatibility might be nice as well.

Ritek has worked perfectly for me, in all my DVD players as well as PS2.

Cheapest is NOT the way to go on 4x,
each burner has its quirks, likes and dislikes.
you are better off to get a sample pack of 4x media with several different brands, and try them all,
then decide if you want to have 20 coasters out of 50 @1.50 each, or 2 coasters out of 50 @1.90 each.

-my 2¢

agreed - i suppose sites like dvdrhelp.com can really help out though!

personally, i've tested at least four different types of media, ranging from junk to what's considered excellent, and i haven't had a single coaster yet (latest Sony 510a 4x +/-R). but i agree, to be safe, get a single or a sample pack, and make sure it works before buying bulk.

i just picked up a 50pk spindle fo memorex dvd-r @ compusa...$1.20/disc

and to answer question 5, FatWallet, which you should at least give credit for if your going to copy. But you are right in the sense no one here as taken the time to put a list together, so thanks. 😀

I'm in! I got a Sony DRU 510a recently and am still learning about what's what in media. Still on my first 50 spindle of Riteks and have had some coasters, perhaps they don't all burn well at 4x. I'm looking forward to finding good deals and learning about media, techniques and which ones work best for me

Micro Warehouse in Houston, has Verbatim 4X DVD+R 15 pack for $18.95. I have an Optorite 0203 and they work fine in it at 4X. Fry's in Houston, also has a 5 pack with slim cases DVD-RW for $9.99. Theie Ad price on Friday said $12 but the price sticker said $9.99 which is what they charged. Brand is "CQ" no speed listed on label. Haven't tried them yet. YMMV.

Many thanks for the research! Do you have any plans on updating the prices on any sort of regular scehdule? I think we are finally starting to see DVD media prices start to go down. If your original posting were to be updated every couple of weeks with new prices, new media, new vendors, etc., it would save a lot of time in doing research when it is time to replentish the stock. The AT effect may even cause a minor price war amongst the various vendors trying to grab market share from competitors who are a few cents cheaper per disc, lower shipping and handling fees, etc.

A regularly updated listing would make an excellent sticky here at AT.

😉

MeritLine has their Samsung BeAll media on sale for 20% off
Text
With the 20% off, a spindle of 2X 100 works out to $110, shipped - 4X 100 is $140. These are great prices on very high quality media. If you need DVD cases, they also have free shipping on DVD and DVD case combos - 50 of each is $70.

how does the be-all work with dru-500ax? does it burn at 4x reliably? I ordered ritek 4x which was suppose to work at 4x with 500ax, but it burns at 2x. Now I am leery of generic 4x dvd-r.

dvd+r on the other hand will always burn its max speed reliably. But then again, all of dvd+r media I have are name brand. It's so hard to find name brand dvd-r in the stores (I have actually never seen it)

are you sure you updated your firmware of your sony drive to the latest, that would explain the 4x problem.

BeAll media is NOT generic. It's made by SamSung and I've been using it on my DRU500A for the past year or so. Burns great...no coasters yet. 🙂

ill just weigh in on my media experience...
Had 2 25 packs of Ritek G03 media, 2x hack on pioneer A05. The last 2 disks off the spindle had major errors. If you look at the bottom of the disk, you can actually see that it missed burning some spots. Could be due to media, or the fact that i was burning 1x certified media at 2x... who knows....
Just now got the Princo 4x .... and while ive only burned a few things, loving it so far...
