I have a mobile authenticator. I have *not* been hacked.

There is no proof of people with the secure (not dialup/SMS) authenticators getting hacked. Please post proof if you're going to spread the same tired rumor.
 
Been playing a witch doctor. Easily went through the first two acts in normal. Already level 22... Barely played at all. I've been rushing through all the places, only killing shit when necessary and I'm already leveling super fast.

The +30 intel from each enemy spell (stacks 5 times) + fire bird (single firebird that does 250%+ of your weapon damage) is mega OP. I do 300+ damage on that shit. Takes out almost everything in one hit. Champions are a joke. Run, fire, run, fire... stutter step micro the whole way.

With my monk that I had before... it wasn't possible to do that kind of shit. I might have been able to kill stuff pretty easily, but I had to do it melee... With the WD, I can run and shoot... and pray that I kill shit. And usually I do, I've seen more 7+ killed at once stuff than ever before. I think one of my spells killed over 20 things at once. It was ridiculous. The damn spell travels a ridiculous 40 yards.

At any rate, I'd like very much to know why exactly there isn't a free desktop version of this 'authenticator'. I don't have a $200 phone, and if the things are necessary to the extent being tossed around - they damn well should've been free with the purchase of the game. Period.
 
Did something happen to latency with the 1.02 patch? My latency went from low 200 to 290/300 ish, to 300-1000ish. Even in town this is going on...wtf. I checked DSL links, from Albany NY to NJ I get 22ms. 120ish to DC, and 170 to LA. So then I checked BF3 and have no problems.

I had connetion problems before, now I can connect but get a slideshow that keeps throwing me back half a screen so I can't tell where I actually am in refrence to mobs and have died 10+ times.

I only get to play a game 1-2hrs a day on weekends and now this crap.

there is an andriod emulator you could use. I assume they don't offer it on the desktop, assuming the passwords are not being brute forced and the client computer is compromised having a 2nd authentication factor on the same machine is pretty much worthless from a security stand point.

They also offer USB authenticators for like $10, I know it sucks to pay for security but if you can't afford $10 then you probably shouldn't be playing anyway.

I agree about that buff; it is awesome! My WD is nuts. Just wait til you get the rune for your Gargantuan, the one that makes him turn into a total beast for 15 seconds when a unique/champion/boss is encountered. BTW, it supposedly will only trigger once every 120 seconds, but all you have to do is re-summon the Gargantuan (which has a 60 second cool down) and that resets the enrage buff (or whatever it's called).

I've been using poison darts + splinter rune. That seems to annihilate everything pretty well. My WD is lvl 33 currently in Act 1 Nightmare.
 
got some momentary disconnect from the damn server, popped back in and the dungeon was refreshed and all the items I'd gotten missing from the bags.

If your password was compromised, it's quite possibly because your computer was compromised. The idea of an authenticator is to have a non-compromised system providing an extra layer of security. If a hacker can screencap your computer with a Windows-based authenticator, they can swipe your codes.
 
It's also quite possible it was a web based phishing attack, or other compromise. A desktop authenticator would protect against those. And surely having additional security against the most common types of attacks would be of enough benefit to make it worthwhile even if it doesn't protect against far less common severe compromises like would be required for that.

Beyond that though, meh. 8 hours, no response on my support ticket at all, and anywhere I talk about it I get accused of falling for phishing schemes. So, 90 hours work all gone, and I get called an idiot to boot. At this point, it's just not worth playing the game anymore.

my wild guess is that some popular gaming forum databases have been compromised and to just make sure to give the bnet account its own unique password

and to the people leveling up a Witch Doctor, enjoy it while you can because the fun definitely ends by Inferno Act 2 unless you really like spamming splinters and using CC/kiting tactics which I unfortunately actually enjoy otherwise I'd make a DH and be rolling in the monies

There's something else going on, too many are getting hacked. Blizzard should have just put an authenticator in the box, it's not like they didn't charge enough.

To be clear, there are 3 types of authenticators. The dial-in are not supported by Diablo 3. The physical & mobile are the only 2 that will help.

Even so, Blizzard had stated it is not an end-all be-all solution, but ridiculously lowers your chances of being compromised.

Imagine that, let's say, 10,000 people have been hacked (compromised, actually). I would say with the amount of complaints, that's probably a generous number. Do you know what percent of players that is?

0.159% (10,000/6,300,000)

In fact, for it to be 1% of all players, there would have to be 63,000 (yes, that is 63-THOUSAND) records of "getting hacked".

Now really, with the actual amount of reports, is it that big of an issue or "too many"?

These people are being compromised, end of story. If there was a hack going on, there would be much more outrage.
 
I was doing good leveling my DH today (around middle of NM) til a thunderstorm knocked out my internet. Oh and it also struck my HVAC unit outside and set fire to it and a tiny part of the house lol. I got an awesome response from the fire dept though, so it coulda been worse. Looks like I won't be hitting up Inferno with her his week though.

I started out as a wizard, got to A2 NM, but I didn't really like how it played. Monk was fun til inferno, and I'm really liking DH so far.
 
Lets face it, blizzard will never give out numbers, their phone queues are at the very minimum 1 hour long (my wait was 68 minutes on a weeknight) and there's definitely a lot of outcry about hacks.

So get an authenticator to start off.

Back on topic, at lvl 59 with wizard, about to finish act 4 (which will put me at 60) in hell. What should I be doing next? Run inferno act 1 and get my ass handed to me? Start farming gear somehow?

Or... save money for auction house lvl 60 gear....
 
To be clear, there is a legit free authenticaor for PC. Get an android emulator and you can run phone apps on it. Thus, you can use the mobile authenticator and have it on the computer. Its what I use and I wasnt going to pay for one nor do I have a smart phone. Its legit, and free.

I saw some asking so.....

If there are bots then they're in the general chat. They spam occasionally about selling gold.

But, you're not going to notice bots... Bots are going to do private games, if they exist. Public games do not do any favors for bots. (Less MF, for one)

I doubt bots exist at this point anyway. (Only because in D2 it was so easy to tele everywhere)

What is this firebird? Are you talking about the single bat with the fire rune or are you talking about the firebomb?
