I don't think that's the case at all. In most games (i.e. not Diablo or Borderlands), to play a higher difficultly level, you typically just start a new game at that difficulty level. In some games, you can swap difficulty mid-game. For example, Torchlight II lets you set the difficulty when you create a new character.

Diablo and Borderlands differ in that the extra playthroughs offer the higher difficulties.

Why not just buy the gear in the AH? And also, equipment have level requirements so it's not like your lvl 1 can use a lvl 30 weapon and charge through normal mode. You're still stuck with level progression and item upgrades.

Pretty much any game that you have to "Unlock" nightmare mode, means that you have to be of a certain power to survive that level. So kind of like not being able to play NWN2 - Mask of the Betrayer prior to 17th level. You would get killed by just about any of the monsters.

Word from my friends that play Inferno with a Wizard is that the only viable damage spells are Arcane Orb, Blizzard and Hydra. Anything that you need to stand still while using is instant horrible death.

I had to switch to Arcane Orb + Blizzard + Magic Missiles (Seeker) for damage spells once I started Hell. It's all about being highly mobile once you get past Nightmare x_x

What I'm trying to state is that I think people are looking at the difficulty levels of Diablo in the wrong way. The user most likely assumed that Nightmare was no different than turning up the difficulty in other games where it is simply a toggle. There are some games that do use the simple toggle method where harder difficulties cannot be unlocked until you beat the game on an easier difficulty.
 
is there a trick for searching for gems in the AH?

I super don't feel like leveling up the skill on my own, but all my searches come up empty.

Does anyone else find it a bit ridiculous that you have to 'Level up' the blacksmith and the gem dealer? And with Cash no less? Seems to me like they just wanted to further push people to either farm gold or to use the auction house.

with weapons its really only the physical that matters. A bow with a lot of elemental damage might look cool if its boasting a big dps number. But in actuality that elemental damage only adds the amount of elemental damage and does not scale or gain bonuses like the physical damage would.

For instance on my hunter if I put on a bow with 800 dps that is all real physical damage then my DPS is about 35000. However If I put on a bow that does 800 damage but its 400 physical and 400 fire then my DPS drops drastically and is only about 22000.

So in other words elemental damage does not gain bonuses from dex, physical does.

Anyone tested this? If it's true I will have to completely re-work how I examine weapons for purchase on the AH. I kind of doubt it is true, but if it is I would rather know now than later...

From my testing and experience, this is wrong. Damage, regardless of the type is added to DPS and is affected by modifiers. There is even a physical damage modifier on top of +% modifiers.

The reason for differentiating the damage types is that mobs/players have a different resistances to different damage types and that is factored into the end damage.

For example, if a weapon had 200-400 dmg @ 1/sec, that is 300 DPS base. Let's say it has added + fire damage at 100-200. That means the overall DPS of the weapon is now 450 DPS.

Now you shoot a mob that has fire resistance equivalent to taking 50% less damage from fire. That mob is taking the full 200-400 dmg + 50-100 fire dmg for a total of 375 DPS.

If you shoot a mob that has no fire resistance, you will do a full 450DPS.

This is all assuming you are using the weapon to attack. Some abilities transform the weapon DPS to skill DPS and the damage type becomes the skill damage type.

For these classes, the damage type pretty much doesn't matter. For example, a wizard just get the highest DPS weapon. Their spells determine the damage type to the mob.

I pretty much salvage everything I can't use, or put it on the AH.

Big dps weapons don't start to drop til inferno, and my 681 dps one-hand axe dropped in A2 inferno. After about 10 runs in A1 (I can survive almost any elite there), I haven't found anything close to it (but did find 2 plans and random other good gear).
 
Why do you use magic missile with seeker instead of shock pulse with piercing orb? Is it just for temporal flux? It seems shock pulse damage would be similar but ability to aoe pierce would be more damage?
 
Keep in mind too guys...once you get to Inferno, killing rare or champion packs will grant you the Nephalem Valor buff, which lasts for 30 minutes and stacks 5 times. This greatly increases your MF/GF. However, if you swap skills, runes, passives or leave the game, you will lose this buff.

The Arcane Orb has a knockback which is minor and seemingly random, but combined with the aoe explosion, it helps me survive inferno.

I used to use Celestial Orb (passes through), but I was dieing alot, even to trash... switched over and I survive much better.

In Hell I used Celestial Orb exclusively without a problem.

I means replacing the signature spell magic missile with seeker rune with the signature spell shock pulse with piercing orb rune. Not arcane orb.
 
From what I've gathered, people aren't complaining that much about Inferno it self being too difficult, more so the champion/elite packs which are just down right silly. There are some combo's that are simply unkillable for classes.
