Like others have said getting to 20 can take 15+ hours depending on how you play and how often. Once you get the hang of it you know what to use to level up quickly. The first time going from 20 to 25 will be the hardest because of Gear but buying armor from the vanguard when able will help a lot.

It took me about 3 weeks to get my second character to 28 and 2 days (about 10 hours) to get my 3rd to 24 but my first character took...let's just say longer to get there.

There is one DLC coming out in December which I don't think you're required to get if you don't want to and another next year.
 
I just got this game last night for Xbox One and just got to level 10 LOL. So far I am really loving this game. Its like a cross of Halo meets Mass Effect but with way better controls.Any tricks or tips for leveling up a bit faster?? I tried going to a level 12 mission but the enemies in that level are so strong that if I get hit once I die..

Just do all the story missions and then do the beacon missions for experience. The strikes too help level you up when you haven't hit 20 yet.

I did that one with a void machine gun and an void fusion
camping heavy ammo and going really slow is a good idea
I did it all in control

Stack up on bounties from the tower before you go out it's a good experience boost, some you have to specifically do others you can get done while doing story missions.

Do the strikes for each planet you unlock as well (sometimes there are bounties to complete specific strikes).

I also tried to get in at least one public event per day which also nets you upgrade material for later.

Hmm I was going to wait for the next iron banner to do it since I don't play much PVP but I might just try and get it done in control. I don't even think i'll use the gun after I get it either lol
 
Do you need all raid armor to get to 30? I currently have my exotic helm, my leg arm, and leg boots maxed. I just got a chest from a raid last night, habrs wrath I believe it's called. If I max that, would I get o 30?
 
you need 4 raid items maxed to get to 30
or 3 raid items and an exotic

2 raid items an exotic and a normal legendary will get you to 29.75

you need 120 light for 30

Do all the bounties every day for the vanguard. They are easy, like do 6 patrol missions here or kill that boss. They give bonus experience.

How did you get enough legendary stuff and the materials to level it? You can't even buy legendary gear until rank 2 and you need marks and with a cap of 100 per week you need 3 weeks worth. I don't know anyone even on other forums and stuff who has seen that many legendary drops for the correct class.

My only conclusion would have to be he got a few of good drops (exotic and or legendary with some to scrap) and a lot of public events lol

3 legendaries from vanguard = 190 marks = can be achieved early 2nd week (you get to rank 2 fast, as you progress to lvl20)
1 exotic helm from Xur = one Xur weekend
70 Ascendant shards - that would be the hardest part actually... let's say 20-ish from daily heroics and a bit of luck over 2 weeks, then if he's lucky, some from the weekly heroic (10 over 2 weeks?), then raid twice for even more. Rest is grinding public events...

Not impossible.

Definitely not impossible but just takes a lot of play time. And luck with daily heroic giving shards and not energy.

Yup, in bought three legendary armors in a couple days. I already had enough for one piece, then Tuesday came around and in literally like 4 days I had full legendary gear since I already had an exotic helmet. It's real easy to farm Vanguard Marks from Public events. This past weekend I finally got to Rank 3 and starting to buy some legendary weapons.

I have played an average of 6 hours a day i would guess since launch. Took me about a month to hit 29.

I currently have 210 hours in the game according to Bungie stats and will just now hit 30. I did everything I could to get stuff, vanguard is 16 cryptarch is 47. The amount of RNG in the game is sickening sometimes.

Well not impossible but the raid part does depend on when he started playing the game.
 
I also didn't start on a Tuesday so two weeks for me meant three nightfalls/weekly/raids. Bought two legendary pieces, and an exotic helm, and had one piece drop but I could have bought it as well.

went a bit faster for me, but I lucked out and got 2 of the queens wrath pieces and purchased the other 2. I went from 24-28/29 in about 3 days

Heh well I do have crap for luck best thing nightfall gave me ever was an exotic helm I already had leveled lol
