I did the sleep study last night. Within 3 hrs she woke me up and put on the CPAP machine, my Oxygen levels had dropped to below 60%. The machine is horrid, how can one sleep with one, thank god i have the operation i can consider as an option. I tried different masks,i finally used the one that blows directly into teh nose rather than a mask.

The lady said that its very unusual to see a guy my age and size to have sleep apnea. But in my case its due to tissue on the back of my throat and enlarged tonsils.

I have the exact same problem. I did the sleep study last fall. Enlarged tonsils are restricting airflow while I sleep. I still haven't gone to do the surgery yet though. I keep pushing it back because of job searching, new job, and pregnent wife.

Where do you go for the study? What signs told you you had a problem? I'm curious because I truly feel I need this as well, just haven't done it.

Go see your doctor first. He'll send you to a Sleep Center (I went to the Sleep Center of Atlanta) for a consultation. From there they will determine if you need to do a sleep study or not.

Oh, as for the signs that I had a problem.
1) Being tired all the time no matter the amount of sleep I got.
2) Waking up in the middle of the night choking because I had stopped breathing (great way to scare the wife or girlfriend).

While it's true that majority of people with sleep apnea are overweight a good number of people with this disorder are within the weight range. In your case, most likely, it's due to the consitution of your nasal passages, throat muscels, or combination of both. A surgery will only give you a ~ 70% success rate, if that much. Additionaly, throat tissue may regrow over time so, eventually, you may face another surgery.

My suggestion is to give the CPAP machine another try. Like you, I absolutely hated the idea of sleeping with the machine, and wearing the mask was unbearable and a bit claustophobic (I wear a full face mask) However, once I was able to sleep through the entire night with the mask on (took about a week or so) I was AMAZED at the results. I havn't slept so well in years.

If you think that CPAP restricts your berathing you have couple of options. Doctor may adjust the airflow pressure, or you may go on a BiPAP machine.

I've got some big old tonsils myself, I figure they're probably a leading cause for my snoring.

How did you find your sleep clinic? I think I need to do a sleep study, as well--I'm wondering if there is some website that lists reputable sleep clinics. Was it expensive for the study?

Go to your doctor. They will give you a referral to a sleep clinic.

Your physician can refer you. If you have health insurance, it should be covered.

seems the operation is definitely indicated and should take care of your problem.
is your surgery scheduled?

I don't wake up at night, but I'm always tired no matter how much sleep I get. I'd like to give this a try.

Don't forget that the condition is both the cause and the effect of being overweight. If you're overweight, you have a higher risk of excess fat constricting your nasal passages and causing the Apnea. If you have sleep Apnea and are tired all day, it makes you less energetic, and thus fatter. It's rough.
