Except for the gay part, the forum was excellent. Like eits said, the President is a very gifted speaker (like Hitler and Reagan), but far more poetic and cultured. I really liked the way he mixed the religion and science together. The guy is clearly an intellectual of the highest order. I was able to get a handshake on his way out to 114th street.

Actually he was evasive, intellectually dishonest and really nothing special when it comes to speak - I'd take Tony Blair over him in a debate any day of the week. Your seeking out a handshake doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

How was he evasive?

Did you listen to a word of the debate? He avoided clarifying his position on whether Israel should be "destroyed". He avoided stating whether his nation would clamp down on insurgents or war material flowing into Iraq. He avoided discussing the specifics of why he considered the Holocaust to require a factual revisiting.

As the president of Columbia implied at the end, he didn't really answer much at all.

Have you ever met a politician that answered such questions in the same manner your children talk to you? I haven't. The man is the leader of a sovereign nation. Pinning him down with such absurd questions was rude. I sent a protest email to President Bollinger for being so arrogant and rude towards the President of Iran. If Bush, who has more blood on his hands came to our campus, Bollinger would show more respect to him (the man that has far more blood on his hands and is hungry for more).

So you admired the poetic and cultured way he avoided actually answering anything. And the "mixing" of science and religion together... Could you clarify what he talked about that you're referring to there? I didn't hear a single mention of anything scientific.

He was basically talking about science being purity of the highest order (my own words) and how it was handed down from G-d to man and how it is for all men, not a select few. That was his speech.

As for the QA part, if you've ever been around diplomatic circles (as I have) you know that policy makers and politicians NEVER answer questions directly. They answer their own questions.

EDIT: Again, the man is not a child. Don't treat him as such. Who the fuck are we to demand answers from him? Show some respect?

Are you surprised by my candor? Is anything I said factually incorrect?

Oh..pretty much everything. Unless of course you were watching a different Q&A session than I was.

How old are you?

Reagan a gifted speaker? Not that I recall. He had his moments but quite often he was irritating to listen to, stumbling and bumbling with his "ahhh" and pregnant pauses. Clinton was a far better speaker.

Not to mention that people who are swayed by silver tongues are a bit frightening.

It takes one to know one. Many people say I'm a good speaker and good debater.

That's great. Apparently you've swayed yourself. But, frankly, you don't do a thing for me.

I must have misunderstood the purpose of a question and answer session.

I don't speak farsi so I cannot quote him directly. Watch the video yourself and you will see what I mean.

As for the QA part, try listening to any politician in America and see if they ever answer the question they are asked directly. Then see if the President of Iran is any different. He won't be, unless you expect him to answer the Dean the same way your children answer you, which is rude.

Look, I can see that I'm speaking to somebody from the microwave generation. WTF are you to expect things your way all the time? The world doesn't work that way. Put some thought process into his answers and try to see what he's really saying (behind the double-speak). That's what I do for all politicians. You should too.

I've shaken his hand before, outside the ScottishRite Temple on Lavaca and 18th Street in Austin, Texas. I would certainly do it again out of respect. In my opinion you always meet a man as equals.

I listened to it live and caught it all. I still don't know what you mean, because you're making it up out of nothing.

Mr. Ahmadinejad came away today having said nothing he hasn't said in the past. It was all evasions or outright dishonesty from a man whose full-time job is to justify the reprehensible actions of the government he is a party of. Knowing all this, you sought to shake the man's hand. That, to me, speaks a lot of about the kind of person you are.

So you did not hear his references to science, the prophets, nuclear technology, big powers? If not, then you missed a big chunk of his message.

And you are right, he said the same things before. Nothing new. We're you expecting a surprise because you're so special? Try to have the same standards for all politicians. Just because he's Iranian, don't expect him to answer you like a child answers his father.

Yes, and you were bitching then as you are now. Again, find me an interview where a leader of a nation answered all the questions directly. Just one interview. No evasions, just straight talk. Again, President Bollinger was rude and condescending (for political reasons no doubt) and I was disgusted by it. He got exactly what he deserved by being so rude towards a world leader.

Narmer, if Ahmadinejad is to be taken seriously and with the same respect as anyone else while also being a politician that answers only questions he wants to answer (which I agree is like most politicians), as you posit, why would he publicly deny the holocaust? Is that not suicide economically, given the sanctions on Iran, as well as politically/diplomatically with practically every other civilized country in the world? Can't I reasonably conclude that he's merely a bigot, and perhaps even a bit anti-social (I'm using that term in its strictest psychological usage). Bigots and anti-socials do exist, in fact there are some powerful ones in the US. They don't deserve much respect, no? They deserve study, sure. Respect? Not really.

Apparently you are illiterate, considering you're arguing that I'm saying something that I very specifically said I was against in the 6th reply to this thread. Not to mention that your method of argument is to cram things people have not said into their mouths and then refute them.

Let me summarize the proper way to discuss an issue:

1. Read what they said. No, not what you made up in your head and thought they said, but what's actually presented on the screen in front of you.
2. Reply to what they said.

Now, can you do that? Actually - take a night to sleep on it, maybe with 8-10 hours of rest it might start to seep in. I'm headed to bed.

Why should the President of Iran sacrifice his dignity for money? This may surprise you, but some men are incorruptable.

I am simply responding to your questioning of my opinion of the speech. WTF should I have to go back and read what you wrote when you basically answered your own question earlier? Listen, I'm not your mother. It's not my job to remind you of what you said earlier. Now that I've corrected you, you claim to have said what I was saying all along. You're strange.

How was he evasive?

No way you just asked that; you can't be that dumb. Between his interview on 60 minutes and his forum at CU he has earned the title "King of the Strawman". He evades nearly every question and comes back to "but Bush does..."

Pinning him down with such absurd questions was rude.

No it's not. It's calling him on his bullshit.

I sent a protest email to President Bollinger for being so arrogant and rude towards the President of Iran.
