I searched for "nic" in this thread and the only result was the first post. So what is the status on the loss of your connection with the onboard NIC? Is it still happening to people?

I just bought a pair of 1gb Corsair Value Select DDR 400 RAM but the bios and WinXP only recognizes 1gb, what's up with that? How can I fix this? I have the RAM in DDR 1 and DDR 2

First, check the RAM cards individually using Memtest86 to verify that both work properly.

Try setting the memory to 2T in BIOS - I think this is necessary when memory is larger than 1gb.

Check the Pcper mobo forums, they specialize in help for Chaintech owners:

Ok, so I tried one stick of RAM at a time and it appears that with one stick in the computer did not boot, with the other in, it did boot, so I think that's the problem.

Here's a strange sorta problem. I installed a Samsung SATA drive, but neglected to install the SATA drivers. (Chaintech's manual needs serious work.) The drive seems to work fine, but I've noticed that it appears in the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray! When I clicked on Properties, it showed that the drive is in Location 0 (Primary ATA Channel). Should I be concerned? Should I just start over and reinstall Windows XP including the SATA drivers? I'm leaning towards the latter now, but would like to avoid the trouble.

Please help. Thanks.

The sata controller is a hotswappable RAID controller, so thats probably why it shows up in the Safely Remove Hardware icon.

My two raided drives do as well.

Thanks, Samus. I guess I really don't have to worry, but it still nags me.

It seems that my SATA problem is well known out there. Some people say one should install the SATA drivers during the XP install, whereas others say don't bother b/c XP Pro SP2 has built-in support. I'm about to start over and re-install XP and this time install the SATA drivers, but I'm wondering what your opinions are.

On another note:
I'm not getting any sound out of my speakers! I have Cambridge FourPointSurround 2000 Digital. I've tried every jack in back and in front. I know the mobo is working 'cause I can hear sound when I plug in headphones. I checked the Volume Control and nothing's muted, but the controls for Front, Subwoofer, and Rear are grayed out. Any ideas?

I just realized that my speakers connect using a minijack-to-DIN adapter. Would that have anything to do with it?

OK, sorry about the multiple postings, but I figured out my sound problem and thought I'd share.

First, I was mistaken about the controls for Front, Subwoofer, and Rear. They were still usable; only the mute was disabled.
Second, I ditched the DIN and connected the analog Front and Rear cables. That did the trick. There's nothing quite like hearing the Star Wars theme trumpeting from your speakers in triumph! :D

Just got my system up and running using the VNF4/Ultra

With a 3000+ and 2gigs (4x512) of Muskin's value cheapo memory I'm having no problems at all.

Currently running @ 2.56ghz. With a little tweaking of course. It's perfectly stable at this speed.

I can get it to hit windows a little over 2.7 but it locks eventually.

Good board so far, just like my little mATX Summit board.

I am experiencing the same troubles as boggled had but with a DFI lanparty nf4 board and with a Hitachi sata drive, as well as a raptor 36 gig. Well the hitachi is connected, slow detection, windows hangs for about a minute on boot (splash screen dimmed) then boots. IF I remove the sata from the hitachi drive. boots fast. THen I can hotconnect the sata drive (hitachi) and it works fine. Seems like an issue with nf4 and newer sata drives.

My first board was shot and had to be RMAed, and I also first tried using the 24 pin adapter, so that may be a specific issue with frying this board. My first board actually caused my RAM chips to smoke and one of the gold teeth on each ram chip is black now, though they both seem to work just fine and mem test gives them an all clear, so got lucky. This board loaded up fine without an adapter.

It's was stable at first, then I started getting blue screen memory dump problems every other reboot which got consistently worse. Trouble shooting showed this as a driver problem. I updated the BIOS using winflash and right at reboot got a new hardware detected message and my system proceeded to install a bunch of new drivers for my raptor HD and other components. Since the BIOS update, no more problems and win XP fully loads up from power on in under 5 seconds including anti virus and my network.

The only issue I have with this board now is the front mic jack dosent work, though it may be connected wrong possibly and when I use team speak with guild wars, I get occassional beeps and other users hear some distortion when I log into teamspeak which continues until I log out, so I know it is coming from my system and it somewhat annoys them. They suugested I put in a SB live. I never loaded the Nvidia drivers or any chaintech drivers for the board or sound because I am somewhat afraid of causing problems when everything else is running perfect.

For what I paid, definately a nice board.

Is it just me or is the new 6.03.05 bios bad for over clocking? When i flashed my cmos to it, I could no longer overclock anywhere near 2.6gz anymore(originally 1.8gz ). When I flashed to an earlier bios from 03 I could get 2.6 just fine. Just a heads up guys. . . don't use it unless you have dual core and NEED it.

I've been using this board for a while, from february this year, if i'm correct.

the good things:
>super stable board
>rev 1 (passive NB HS only), so quiet board
>good looks and small size
>great OC capability

the bad things:
>stock bios is total junk
>24pin atx power connector placement
>no CT specific windows based flash utilities (you have to have floppy drive to update bios or you have to use 3rd party software, which is not recommended)

At first I got the board with stock V1.0 bios and it su**ed really bad. Couldn't get HTT above 240 and whenever i upped HTT, it put mem command time to 2T.
bios update was little pain, as i had to borrow a floppy drive from a friend. Winxp sys floppydisk doesn't recognize NTFS, so couldnt flashed from harddrive and 1.44MB floppy can sport only one bios image. So no backup possible. Risky stuff. Anyway I did that and upgraded to 0117 beta bios.
2T and 240HTT problems were gone, i got primestable 9x266 3xHTT (3000+ A64 Winchester and 2x256MB DDR566 TCCD chips), but no further than 2.43Ghz. The problem was in core voltage: the best range (1.475-1.550V) was not available (selectable, but didn't change a thing). Anyway, I lived with that, as 2,4Ghz and DDR533 2,5-3-3-7-1T was sufficent. And CPU incorrect speed in POST (because of over 256Mhz HTT) wasnt important. Ran this board at 9x266 1:1 for a couple of month and no coldboots or bluescreens. stable as a rock.
So a month ago I sold my TCCD chips and went for a Apacer AM1 chips noname memory (swapped 2x256MB TCCD for 2x512MB dualsided Apacers for the same price) and new problem arouse. Whatever I put to mem timings, it always gave me 2,5-3-7-7-1T, manually or auto. So I updated to V4 final bios. Fixed voltage problems, incorrect cpu speed showings and memory timings problems.
Now, because of possible higher core voltage, system can run 9x283 (2h prime was), memory at ddr460 2.5-3-3-7-1T (which is excellent for a noname 512MB ram with factory timings 2,5-4-4-8). 1,8Ghz to 2,55Ghz OC is nothing less than impressive, especially with regular RAM. Also tried 8x300 and system booted and benced with no problems (but scores were worse than 9x283, so no point of using it, especially when i had to lower RAM to 200/133 ratio).
Cooling have never been an issue, i have higher end Thermaltake Venus 12 copper cooler.
Still, had one intresting bios-mobo drivers issue. Tried beta nvidia nforce platform drivers and it messed up C'n'Q. After enabling cnq, it couldnt get up to normal speeds. I noticed it after a while (playing CS:source). Disabled cnq from bios and now all OK. Now i updated nforce drivers upto final release, but havent checked C'n'Q problem yet.

With updated bios, this board is a Killer. Especially at this price. Havent seen any BSOD-s, absolutely rock solid
NB! It does choke at HT multiplier 4x and 5x, i don't know why. I can use 3x300, but no 4x240, how strange is that. But performance wise HTT multi is unimportant (no difference whatsoever), so you can always stick with safe 3x.
I use older Antec 350W SmartBlue PSU (came with antec lanparty case), with 20->24pin adapter. Works fine.

I also dont have a problem with this board and just a 20pin HEC 350w PSU. Didnt even bother with the 24pin adaptor.

I'm only running a 6600 for video though.

Hi HQee,

I've heard the knock on the placement of the VNF4's PSU connector repeated in reviews and now in owner comments. Even if cards were added to fill up the slots, the PSU cables wouldn't interfere with anything in my Sonata case setup, as shown here:
http://www.gadgetbuilder.com/VNF4%20004.jpg

So, what am I missing? Could you post a picture of your case interior so I can understand the problem you have encountered?

i have modded case. Well, sleeved ATX (in a garden hose :)) runs exactly over CPU cooler. Okay, its sleeved, so no real airflow issue. But then issue with 20-24pin adapter. 12V 4pin ATX cable is as long as 20pin ATX cable, but with adapter, main ATX power gains 20 cm in length and resulting a bit of a mess, shown on the pic (not the best pic, but still shows something). And worst part is that it does lie against my MSI 6600GT card (thankfully no issues).

I couldn't OC-d video card that much withoud adapter so I haven't thought of removing the adapter.

24pin and 4pin connector placement is not a big deal, it's just could have been in a better place (at least for me)

Thanks for the picture, you clearly have a much different cabling setup than I have.

I'm surprised to hear that adding a 20-24 adapter helped in overclocking your video card.

Chaintech indicated that the VNF4 was designed for 20 pin power and that 24 pin power is accommodated so it can work with most any presently available PSU of appropriate amperage. I.e. 24 pins is a user convenience, not a necessity. I would have guessed that the additional contact resistance introduced by an adapter might cause problems rather than cure them.

I know that 20>24 pin adapter is not necessary, some even say it is not recommended. But strangely, without it, my MSI 6600GT couldn't get memory above 1200 Mhz (lucky having 1.6ns GDDR3 mem). With adapter, it ran 1330 without artifacts/issues.

Hi, I purchased this board for my new computer build. The basic specs include:

AMD x64 3200 Venice w/ Zalman 7700cu CPU Cooler
Chaintech Zenith VNF4 Ultra
PQI 1GB DDR 400 memory
Chaintech 6600GT PCI-e

I cant seem to get this thing to overclock much. Right now im set to 2.2ghz (200mhz overclock), anything else above that doesnt work. WTF

I've read reviews on my CPU with other boards and lots of people are getting 2.4ghz easily on stock volts. Is this board just really awful for OC'ing, or am i not going something right? The manual for this crap is like a 4 page pamplet, and it doesnt explain anything. As far as i know, most my settings in the BIOS is set on AUTO in terms of the HT, Memory timings stuffs, cause i dont know much about those settings. O'yeah I've already flashed it to the latest BIOS (the one that has support for dual-core)

Thanks.
