There is now an independent group that measures the sales between BD and HD-DVD.

read below:
Sales Comparison

these results have been out for a little while I believe, at least to the industry execs. Fox used it to say they predict BD will reign victorious after CES.
these should become weekly, and if so, I shall update the thread with results when they are released online.

stay tuned.

edit:
in bid to help make this a more 'Official' topic, it needs more. thus, I will continue to update the list as to which movies are the best choices to own when it comes to picture.

the below will be in no certain order
Blu-Ray Must Own (Picture Quality is best on these movies):
Mission:Impossible:3
Ice Age: The Meltdown
Superman Returns
X3: The Last Stand
World Trade Center
Aeon Flux
Black Hawk Down
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
The Punisher?
The Phantom of the Opera
Reservoir Dogs
Tears of the Sun
Underworld: Evolution
Windtalkers

not all of the above may be the best movies, and some better movies with better quality than some of the movies listed do infact exist. I do claim this is a complete list, I merely have run out of time to compile the list, but thought I'd at least start.
I will also add the HD-DVD section soon enough.
I am getting all these picks from both highdefdigest.com and avsforums.com. This will simply be an easy thread to compare the two formats, and list the best choices both formats have to offer.

Not surprising. Sony is forcing early adoption of BD by including it in ther ps3s, hddvd is cheaper and all that etc... but thats not enough to win the war. Sony is working hard for this one.

Interesting to see that the BD is gaining ground so quickly when the PS3 isn't selling all that well. Does anyone know the number of BD players sold excluding the PS3? I'm happy nonetheless since I own a PS3.

Well its not selling well when compared to other consoles, but it is selling. What we need to find out is how well it is selling compared to hddvd players.

i personally am glad they are risking so much on it... because its a viable format and essentially the better format. nice to see this time around, when they have a strong format, they actually have studios supporting it. Disney and Fox are going to be key. Thankfully Warner is now on both formats, just gotta convince Universal to start sharing. It's going to be sad when some of Spielberg's movies are released only on HD-DVD (versus the Paramount movies will end up on both, so no Spielberg movies will be Blu-Ray exclusive, because I am not aware of him making anything with Fox). waiting to see Lucasfilm's format choice, however. But knowing Lucas, no movie of his will touch the new formats until one format is declared the 'winner' and 4+ years have passed.

I think that alot of these sales figures come from the release of the PS3. In reality I believe that once players make it to market, and become affordable enough for people to actually purchase (Without bugs, and with all the features). I believe that HD-DVD will win in the long run.

Actually, PS3 has sold more than 360 (launch wise) but the supply is greater.

there was talk that people who were buying BD players were buying, on average, 20+ BD movies. Believable, considering there are people on the extreme end of the spectrum buying 30-50 of the movies (the people who have an insanely large checking account). My BD player is my PS3, and I personally already own 8 BD's, 7 of those being bought (one was a gift, one was half of a gift since I exchanged a DVD version for the BD version), with Talladega being a gift from Sony. I plan to continue to purchase them, but at a slow but steady rate since I still have to have faith in the format being the dominant. I have no fear that it could win out over HD-DVD, but rather fear a compromise format that is incompatible with both players.

DVD's are only fine if you don't have an HDTV. ;)

well obviously people care, since this is probably the 10th or 20th bd vs hddvd thread in the last 3 months.

true, expense is definitely a variable in the matter. Blu-Ray commercials need to strongly advertise the PS3 as a viable player so people don't go to a Best Buy, see that BD players are $1000, whereas Toshiba offers $500 models for HD-DVD... a consumer is going to choose that, without knowing that a comparable, and more capable player is available from the other camp in the form of the PS3 for $500 (more capable as in, can do more things, and is more or less bug free and faster loading than all other HD-DVD/BD players, not necessarily just because its a BD player in of itself).

Out of launch with the supply, now it isn't selling for jack from everything I've seen. Particuarly in Japan, last week alone, only 21k. Can't wait for the NPD January numbers for North America.

Anyhow, just got my player, I certainly plan on picking up some of the Spielberg classics that are coming to HD, plus 300 new titles on HD-DVD ftw this year.

I honestly believe blu ray will win, and this is coming from someone who owns an hd-dvd drive. I'm just being a realist. If you look at releases for both formats blu ray will be getting around 3 times the amount of titles as hd-dvd, not to mention better movies in general. Plus porn WILL be coming to blu ray(with 'debbie does dallas again'), as well as hd-dvd. Plus the industry supports blu ray much more than hd-dvd, but consumers supported hd-dvd more.. now things seem to be starting to change. I would be willing to bet that hd-dvd will be phased out by the end of 2007 to mid 2008.

many places have basically said the PS3 is the best BD player available, with the shortest load times, most responsive player controls (pause, rewind, fast-forward), and no video faults introduced through the player.

thread is now complete. :D

blu-ray has better read times at the moment (compared to HD-DVD), and larger storage capacity. the only complaint that could have originally served as a point for HD-DVD was the distance data is written to from the surface of the disc. however, this no longer matter because the protective layer developed by TDK that is placed on all BD's has proved to be quite durable, standing up to some of the worst treatment a consumer could throw at it, practically non-scratchable by the typical consumer. steel wool apparently doesn't even phase BDs.

Porn is going HD-DVD, not Blu-Ray
I read this 2-4 weeks ago.

Then again, the sound of porn on a regular dvd is bad and it's no better than VHS for all you sound buffs
