Bring some beanbag chairs or other ass support devices if you're going to have a TV in your room. No matter how big your screen, I'm sure as hell not going to be standing around all day :p

I'm assuming you are going to be a dormie, so my list is based on that criteria.

1. Duct Tape
2. Sandels for the shower( this is VERY important)
3. Some sort of shower caddie
4. Air fresheners (yea, I know you stink, and so does your laundry)
5. F'breeze
6. Refridgerator
7. White Christmas lights(very nice if put up properly)
8. Computer(of course)
9. TV/DVD player
10. Sound system
11. Couch(screw chairs man, you can sleep on a couch and do a lot things on a couch, trust me)
12. Cleaning crap(carpet cleaner, dusting material, 409, Windex)
13. Carpet ( if your room doesn't have carpet, get some. It makes a HUGE difference)
14. Get a loft that uses 4x8's. (2x4's will break under certain situations)
15. Closet organizer (Space is a premium, so make the best of it)
16. MiniVac
17. Sheets that are at least 300 stitch
18. Quaters for laundry
19. Get an ATM card with a nearby bank or whatever one your school uses.
20. Get your books early so you can get used.
21. Bike
22. Bring lighting if your room uses flourescent. FLOURESCENT SUCKS!!!
23. Bring some good drinking glasses for those special occasions
24. I suggest liquor, but this is up to you. At least have the basics. (Vodka, Rum(White for mixed drinks), Gin, Whiskey(Blended is best for mixed drinks), Triple Sec, Tequila) The quaility is up to you.
25. Classy posters, not ones with girls in swimsuits. That screams horny freshman.
26. I reminder board for your door so people who stop buy can leave messages, make sure to chain the marker to the door.
27. Your head, college is the best experience in the world, just don't blow it.

Everyone has pretty much covered everything except one thing.
HEADPHONES!
Reason #1
If you have a roomate they may not like your type or music or just don't want to hear it.
Reason #2
The walls are paper thin in most dorms. If they were any thinner you could cough and they'd fall down. If you turn up your speakers odds are every person within 100' feet of your room will hear it loud and clear.

Oh yeah and on this subject... Good earplugs for when you want to sleep.

Also even if you are 21 or over check the rules on liquor. Most dorms do not allow any alcohol or drinking in the dorms regardless of age. Also most of them if you are under 21 (this is where it's 21 mind you) and even if you went out to drink, you get caught drunk, you get kicked out of the dorms. My brother-in-law's roomate at Purdue had this happen to him so take those rules seriously.

A lot of people don't have cable outlets in their room.
At my school we use our student card to pay for everything, including laundry. :)
Wouldn't a reminder board be seriously abused?

I believe I've read you're going to U waterloo next year, but I believe you're mistaken if you pay for laudry via student card. (though I could be mistaken).
A reminded board is really useful, but sometimes the university provides you with one. But I wouldn't really count on it. People will leave messages.
Which residence are you in?

Bah- if your parents live only 20 minutes away, you're not "really" living away from home. You may as well commute.

i disagree, i wont be going home on weekends or anything, and theres no time durng the week for me to see my parents. i really am living away from home. in any case, i have to live on campus to accept my scholarship, so that makes my choice for me.

Village one single room. We were told back in october 2001 that we could use our watcard at the laundry facilities. Maybe only some of them support it and others take quarters.

I meant couldn't people write really incriminating things on your reminder board like say if your girlfriend was angry with you or your friends were pulling a prank...

mm.. V1..

and yes people could, but I doubt anyone will. I mean it's fun for mybe frosh week, then everything sorta settles down a little bit. I'd say take the reminder board because it's good to have, besides what's the big deal if someone writes on it you can laugh at it. Generally you won't find earth shattering news written on your whiteboard. ie, your 'girlfriend' leaving you a nasty message on a white board probably won't be true, in your email inbox, a little more believable, on your answering machine, yes.
