In Japanese, is that calligraphy word pronounced "aye4" as well? Just curious because two of the new ninjas have an 'i' on their clan band while the middle guy just had the word written on his forehead.

NO, these guys were featured in early episodes of Naruto. They're Genins from the Sand Village. The thing on their head is suppose to represent some kind of sand pillar like the icon on the Konoha ninjas is a leaf. And from what I know that doesn't say anything in japanese.

I think his aye has something to do with the love for himself and nothing else. They get into it in some of the earlier episodes

it's basicly pronouced the same in chinese and japanese and i thought it had to do with his mother. dunno, i don't remember those chapters very clearly.
