I'm reading the Core 2 Duo manual right now and it keeps talking about how a "Thermally Advantaged Chassis" is strongly recommended. Shame I never heard this before now.

The Sonata II that I got does have a special duct to aid in cooling the CPU, but the case is still not listed on Intel's "approved" list.

Anybody have any opinions on this?
 
Hi, first post here. I installed this with a e6700 without a hitch, everything worked. I have one question about the ez-wifi mode with the remote. The instructions are not clear about it working in sleep mode. When I press the sleep mode button on my remote, it works perfectly and goes to sleep. When I press the Wifi button, only the monitor shuts down, the rest of the computer stays on. I was under the impression that it can go to full sleep mode(s3 i believe) and still have the wifi work. I did some searching and tried moving different usb plugs around, even pulled them all out just to see if it would power down, but no luck. I am using bios 1201.
 
sorry to interupt again but i was just about to click the button to order 1500$ worth of stuff and thought id better check to amke sure this RAM is compatible with the P5W DH
the kit im getting is

will i have any problems with this?
I think the mobo will be shipped with an up to date BIOS so anything in that regard shouldnt be a problem....

Just thought you guys would like to know, it runs fine even though it's not official.

333FSBx9 3.0Ghz on a E6700 with no volt change sounds good...still running orthos.

Mem still at 833MHz with no volt change. This I can live with.

This may be a dumb question, but ... I've got the possibility of a free Audigy 4 to add to my system, and was wondering whether it would provide a better experience than the on-board Realtek audio. Normally I'd automatically favour an add-on to on-board audio, but the Realtek seems to be pretty well regarded as a good sound solution.

Any advice or suggestions?
 
The onboard audio only stabilized after I boosted my RAM speed to what the sticks were rated for. I'd get buzzes instead of music while defragmenting, but now all is fairly well. I'd say get a card if you want...

Alright, So I tried removing drivers, using the supplied drivers from the CD. No luck.
Also tried to plug my DVD Burner and a CD Burner on the Intel IDE connector and then connect the HD on the JMicron connector and now the drive is not accessible in windows explorer says that its corrupt and when i reboot windows wants to check the drives with scandisk which I decline. How should it be setup on the JMicron? In bios I have Enabled / Basic / Disabled for the 3 settings of the JMicron.

Anyone encountered this problem ? Thinking of buying a ide to sata converter.

Some development, tried different things last night. Uninstalled the Jraid tool and uninstalled the Jmicron drivers put Jmicron setting in the BIOS to AHIC. WinXP detected another IDE Controller and the Jmicron controller also. Installed the Standard IDE Controller for the newly IDE Controller that was found installed drivers from Asus website for the JMicron controller and boom everything worked HD plus DVD. Was happy and all. Rebooted after installing a program and now the DVD is not working anymore.

If any got ideas to share please jump, i'll try to let you guys know what i found.

I just slapped my system together and I've got a few issues.

Are the other satas besides the 1,3,4 only for raid? I'm bummed because I've got 5 sata harddrives and it's only reading three.

My idle temps are around 25 for the cpu and 46 for the motherboard. This seems pretty wacky to me, what is the safe temperature for this mobo? What is the critical temperature?

Is the latest bios the 1402, and is it in german?
 
hey guys i have had the best overclock yet by totally removing the ram divider/upping the voltage. my curret setup is now that i have moved to the scyth ninja... E6400 8x 438 = 3504 mhz @ 1.75 vcore, corsair 6400XMS2-C5 running at 5-6-6-18. i will get this cpu-z varified when i return from italy but its totally stable. never ever seen anything overclock this way before
 
I setup my system last night and it seems to be working ok. CPU is idling around 50. Haven't even had a chance to try out a game yet and see the glory of my new 1900XTX.

Initially I hooked up my IDE DVD burner to the lower "Primary E-IDE" connector which is for the J Micron thing (I have no idea what that is, btw). It wasn't detecting so I hooked it up to the other one "Primary IDE" which I for some stupid reason thought was for HDD only, and it seemed to work ok. After a few hours though the CD drive started making funny clicking noises during powerup. This could just be a coincidence since it's an old drive and may finally be showing its age, but I'm hope I didn't hook it up wrong somehow.

The Asus remote software is pissing me off too since it keeps popping up and I can find no way to disable it; may have to uninstall it.
 
Read through the thread. I have stated many times that the JMicron controller does not support ATAPI drives - DVD and CD ROM drives. Frankly, from what I'm reading, the JMicron controller is to be avoided, altogether. It seems the best way to use this board is to go with SATA HDs, while connecting DVD and CD ROM drives to the native (blue) IDE port. Then, disable JMicron controller in the BIOS.

There is a big debate going on whats best to read the temps It seems most folks are using CoreTemp to read the temps. Its free. I dont remember if its mentioned in this thread or not but there are some plastic caps on the Mofsets (I think they are called) that can be safely removed and it'll lower temps significantly. If you go over to the XS forum there is a thread there about the P5W DH and it'll show a picture of exactly what it is and what you have to do. Sorry I dont have the exact page bookmarked. You'll have to go dig it up unless someone here has it linked.
 
My roommate thought the stickers on my north and south bridge heatsinks needed to go... anybody have any thoughts on this?

I am confused about all these "simple" things that lower temperatures. Is it really possible that a bunch of end users know something that the board engineers didn't? I'm puzzled why, if things like silver thermal compound are so good, don't the board mfrs use them? I would like to lower my temps but don't know if I want to mod my board yet.
 
Those caps on the heatsinks should most definitely be removed, once you're comfortable that the board is not defective. Honestly, though, ASUS would lose a lot of credibility with me if doing so voided the warranty. Those caps are purely aesthetic, and can be easily removed without damaging the board. Also, I highly recommend going through the trouble of replacing the stock thermal crud, used under both those heatsinks, with AS5. Doing both the above shaved almost 10C off my mobo temp.

Since I thought ATAPI was synonomous with IDE when it came to CD/DVD, what am I missing here?...

I haven't used the JMicron controller, but the P5WDH manual warns that it does not support ATAPI drives. ATAPI is the interface used by DVD and CD drives.

ATAPI

ATAPI (AT Attachment Packet Interface) is an interface between your computer and attached CD-ROM drives and tape backup drives. Most of today's PC computers use the standard Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) interface to address hard disk drives. ATAPI provides the additional commands needed for controlling a CD-ROM player or tape backup so that your computer can use the IDE interface and controllers to control these relatively newer device types.

ATAPI is part of the Enhanced IDE (EIDE) interface (also known as ATA-2).

From what I can gather, DVD and CD ROM drives will only partially function, when attached to the JMicron controller. I recall reading a few posts about the drives reverting to PIO mode, among other things.

Hey, Well I read on other forums that the JMicron controller does indeed support ATAPI devices. But I guess i'll either buy a SATA HD or a converter and just like you mention avoid the JMicron controller as it is really causing problems.
