I haven't looked inside my case for a long time. So thanks for answering my chipset question. No fan, no noise. Is the Zalman pretty quiet?
 
Anybody could help?

I only copied AWDFLASH.EXE when trying to update my BIOS but I couldn't copy the BIOS

Everytime I boot up... I get a BIO SUM CHECK ERROR and the AWDFLASH Utility comes up... I can't load the BIOS
 
Looks like my ram crapped out. Any recommendations for a 1gig stick as I know this board is rather picky when it comes to ram?

I have (had) a working A7N8X-E Deluxe Mobo. For some reason, I woke up one morning and the computer wouldn't boot. I did all the MS Windows based stuff and eventually found something when wrong with the Bios so I tried updating it.

I followed: http://support.asus.com/technicaldocuments/ technicaldocuments_content.aspx?no=532&SLanguage=en-us and downlaoded everything off the site.

It got to the point of wring the Bios and it got to the bottom right few blocks and it just stopped. As it says not to switch it off, I left the machine on from 9am Saturday to 9pm Sunday and nothing had changed! I went to have a shower and my dad in his wisdom switched it off.

Now when I switch computer on - I can fan going and hard drive whirring but that's about it.

Can anyone help me - best just to upgrade now? I did read "If your system does not reboot, please consult with your local ASUS dealers or contact ASUS Hotline." but I was hoping someone managed to work around this.

Seeing as it was shut off ,you can't use the option of re-installing the old bios 🙁
If you had a hardware fault then updating the bios when it's unstable isn't a good idea 😉 ,or did you mean you'd discovered a software problem with your old bios version?

Anyway ,AFAIK your options are limited to :-

1.Hot swap the bios chip from another identical working mbrd to enable you to reprogram your bios chip.Assuming you can find a willing particepant ,& you have the right bios extraction tool.

2.Send your mbrd off to Asus to be re-programmed ,BUT I don't know how much that would cost & whether it would be worth it.

3.Buy a replacement 2nd hand mbrd

4.Take the opportunity to do a mass upgrade 😀 (& flog off the working old bits)

This of course is assuming their isn't some other fault with your PC.
When you said and the computer wouldn't boot ,what exactly did you mean? ,because if you could get into the bios then it could boot to some degree naturally.

I am hoping that some one can help me with this and excuse me for not reading all 75 pages of this thread 🙂

I finished installing a new Seagate SATA 250 GB HD to my Asus A7N8X Deluxe so now i have an old IDE 80 GB HD and a new 250 GB disks. I unplugged the IDE drive and installed a fresh copy of XP on the new SATA one. I tried booting from the new SATA and it boots fine only if the IDE one is unplugged however as soon as i plug both of them i could only boot from the IDE no matter what i tried.

Can someone tell me what the trick is please i dont get a selection of SATA vs IDE in the boot order in the bios so i am not sure.

Any help would be appreciated

Ps. i had to install the silicon image controler (by hitting F6) when installing windows on the SATA

The problem is in the BIOS i only see HD and there is no option for SATA. I tried making the DVD RW master on the primary and the IDE as slave so it would boot from SATA instead but that didnt waork. I then changed the IDE HD from the primary IDE channel to the seconday IDE channel (now on the same channel as the CD RW) again to force it to boot from the SATA drive and it still doesnt work.

Basically if both IDE and SATA HDs are connected it boots from the IDE HD no matter what and this is the bit that i would like some advice on because i am sure that it does work i have read that people are running modded bioses but i was hoping that i could do it with the official bios.

Also on a side note if i want to reflash my bios is there an easy way i have never done it but i know that it is risky and i dont want to fiddle with floppy disks ETC

Ok the problem is that your computer is thinking that your main boot is your IDE drive. You need to do a couple things first you prob want to back up your IDE drive by booting to windows or how ever you want. Then reinstall windows this time with both drives installed and function and here is the crucial step ...... format the IDE and then install windows on to the SATA. Maybe just formating the ide will fix it but it may be a driver issue you where you need to install the sata drivers from the floppy on boot?

Another fix may be to change jumper on ide to a slavve and/or change its ide cable from primary to secondary? Prob try that first and the floppy that came with the mobo for your sata drivers at boot up

I tried chaning the jumper so that the IDE HD is set up as a slave but that didnt work and yes did change the IDE cable from primary to secondary that didnt work either.

i dont have the floppy that came with it (that was a long time ago lol) but i did download the latest drivers from silicon image and managed to install windows (otherwise you cant even install windows on the SATA drive).

I dont want to format the IDE drive just yet although most files have been backed up because i read somewhere on the net that i will get a boot disk error (insert boot disk) as it will not pick up the Sata drive it will just look at the IDE HD and since it doesnt have windows on it it will complain about the boot error
 
After years of solid use, I finally hooked up the wires from my Antec Sonata FireWire front port to my A7N8X Deluxe v. 1.04. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. I only have one external hard drive to test with (the HD is confirmed to work on both FW and USB 2).

The pin-outs on the board seem very straightforward. Am I missing something obvious? I haven't tried the second FireWire bus on the motherboard yet, but I guess that would be my next try (it's a pain moving my case around).

No and yes. I should have mentioned that Device Manager lists the FW bus, so there must be a mismatch in my wiring...

No luck with the other FireWire conection on the motherboard.

There are 3 ground pins on the header; I chose the one next to the power pin but would this be the problem? All six connected pins are adjacent.

Allow me to clarify. I'm pretty sure about the wiring. Although I didn't locate my Sonata manual (and Antec.com was hosed the day I checked), each wire is clearly labeled.

However, it doesn't work. 🙁 I guess I'll just deal without it; I've never needed FireWire on my PC before and my ext. hard drive works okay over USB 2.
 
Ah ok ,sorry I can't really help you.
How about emailing Antec & asking them? (assuming theirs no FAQ for it) ,when I had an Antec PSU die recently they were quite responsive.(assuming it is the same company)

Have you tried the Antec site again since it was hosed?
 
I was wondering if anyone can help me out with my vista problem. I have installed vista after a lot of troubleshooting.

My samsung 160gig HD causes vista not to boot, and after long time I will just get a black screen after that first green status bar.

It is set up as the primary slave and not the master so I have no idea why...or what to do about it.

Any suggestions?

My motherboard is an ASUS a7n8x deluxe ver.2, I have a western digital HD as the primary master and two dvd drives on the secondary ide channel.
