Well I have reversed the cable on my floppy and the drive "appears" to run, however it does not recognize any disks I place in the drive. Therefore I just flashed like pelikan suggested and was successful in upgrading my BIOS to 1004. Unfortunately the system still only runs at 100MHz FSB and single-channel for my RAM. I am going to attempt to manually change these, however I am concerned about instability again. I will keep you posted, but any extra suggestions would be appreciated.

Edit:

Made an attempt at adjusting to FSB=133 Mhz and was stable for minor apps, crash on any CPU intense apps. Back to running my 2100+ as a 1500+.... 8(

Edit#2: My problem with the CPU clock speed was heat related, see this forum thread for more info.

I'm having a weird problem that i've never experienced before. Basically my USB2 drivers from the actuall mobo install pack don't install. I have no idea why and i have reason to believe that this is causing my computer to randomly restart in the middle of playing games and stuff. Here is my rig....

A7N8X Deluxe
1900+ XP Athlon
512 mb PC3200 Corsair XMS
Radeon 9700 PRO
200gig SE WD hd
Buslink 16x10x40 burner

I had ordered A7N8X- Deluxe(Rev2.0) but I have been delevered Rev.1.04.
My question is

1) Is the revesion -2.0 any better except support for 400 MHz FSB?Is it worthwhile to go to the headache of getting my board replaced (from a very unwilling dealer) or will it be OK to just update the bios?

Any comments are welcome. Thanks in advance.

I would definately return the board for a rev. 2. No question about it, its worth the hassle.
1. You will have a board that does over 200FSB for sure.
2. The chances of your board dying of bios corruption will be slim to none.
3. You will have a cooler running chipset.
4. You will have less unfixable issues with the mb.

dual channel with A7N8X?
hi guys,

got a machine to put together, all these parts are already sourced:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe
AMD Athlon XP 2200 (don't know what core???)
2x Integral 256Mb PC2700 DDR SDRAM

the question is: can i use those two sticks of ram to run them Dual Channel?

What is the Bus speed of the chip? Is it 133?

Can i run the chip at 133 and the ram at 166 and it still be dual channel?

bit confused about all this????

hey pelikan, you changed to the NF7-S rev. 2 from Asus A7N8X??

you seem to be able to run really high FSB at 220 Mhz. overall a better overclocking mobo??

yes it will still be dual channel if you do it this way,
but it will be better to run your CPU FSB and Ram at sync ( 100%) rather then by SPD to get better performance.

YES, at stock speed. your processor runs at 133

I was satisfied with the Asus, but it died of bios corruption. It was a rev. 1.04. So I RMA'd it to Asus and bought an NF7-S rev. 2. This Abit is doing so well that I'll probably just sell my Asus when it gets back here. I'm running it at 220FSB right out of the box. So for overclocking I definately like the Abit better than the Asus I had.
But I've heard great things about the rev. 2 Asus board. There's a guy here and Anand, Jeff something, who can run his at 230FSB with no mods.

i once had a rev 1.04 like u and i know what u mean..
in the end i got a Rev 2.00 but it appears that 215 fsb was already pushing the board to the limit.
maybe those guys got a better board.

nice to hear that ABIT overclocks better than ASUS anytime. :) I believe your PC3500 helped you acheive 220 as well, where as I got a CORSAIR PC3200LLPT instead, I could try lowering the settings to CAS 3, but I think its not really worth it

Windows likes to go back to 800x600 after I shutdown and then reboot. Anyone have any idea what would cause this.
Thanks

Hi there, i have an asus a7n8x with a xp 2500(333 fsb) processor but when the computer starts i see that the mobo recognices a xp 1100.
My system has a kingson 512 memory (pc400) so the problem could be here, dont know..

I change the cpu external frecuency from 100 to 166 and thanks to this i got my 2500 mhz recogniced, but im worried about the sys health (am i overclocking or something?).

thanks a lot

No your not overclocked. Totally normal for the BIOS to read minimum FSB until you revise or reset it . Each time your do a BIOS revision(flash) it will need to be reset. When; and if you decide to try overclocking; you will see the CPU freq. increase; but it will still report as a XP2500. Hope this helps.

Hi. I recently bought the A7N8X and started building my own gaming computer. I almost the same components as you have but I have a boot problem. When I cold boot my computer it doesn't start right away. I have to push the power button again and then press it again and It finally starts on and stays in the POST bu it doesn't continue. Is it a problem with my barton 2500+ or the fact that I'm using a 350W PSU generic brand?

I hope you can help me with my problem.

Thanks.

Hi, didnt know where to post this so i'll post it here and in technical support. I just got my 2500+ and the A7N8X deluxe and put it all together and fired it up, went into the bios and it just shut down on me. Now whenever I try booting up, it powers on for about 5-10 seconds then just powers down. Before I rma the mobo, does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem is? No beeps, just on and off. I even removed everything except ram, and cpu and it did exactly the same thing.

Btw here's my specs

Antec 400 psu
A7N8X Deluxe
2 sticks of pc2700 ram
2500+

dunno if anything else would be relevant, any help appreciated, thanks.

I would take it out of the case, lay it on its box or a magazine, and hook up only psu, ram, video/monitor, cpu and hsf. Re-mount the hsf being careful that it is seated correctly and not hung on the raised side of the socket.

Getting some weird memory behavior with my DDR RAM (I have XP1700+):
1) 2x256MB PC2100 in slots 1 & 3
With "Optimal" BIOS setting, POST report says "133MHz memory timing enabled." With "Aggressive" BIOS setting, POST report sas "Enhanced DDR performance enabled." What's the difference? Also, where in the POST does it say whether dual channel is enabled? I'm not seeing it or it flies by too fast.

2) 2x256MB PC2100 in slots 1 & 3, 128MB PC2400 in slot 2
With "Aggressive" BIOS settings, after a little while (5-60 mins), system crashes. While in Windows, it suddenly shuts off and reboots. Haven't tried with "Optimal" settings yet. Why would it do this? The PC2400 stick is a Corsair XMS memory, so not a no-name brand.

3) Right now I have at 2x256MB PC2100 sticks and 1 512MB PC2700 stick. Which slot should I put the 512MB PC2700 stick for best performance? I do plan to get more PC2700 sticks (and a Barton core) later, but until then I figure I should get the full 1GB memory.

Thanks,
Joe

How likely is it that I will receive an Ultra A7N8X Deluxe board (rev 2.0) with the most current BIOS if I order now? I would truly like to avoid the hassle of having to return and repurchase the motherboards I will be buying.

Thanks.

I just purchased this board & am anxiousy awaiting it's arrival. I've read the manual online. I saw instructions for running RAID w/ serial ATA, but not IDE. Is it possible to run a RAID0 on the IDE channels?

Pelikan, my Rev 1.04 A7N8X Dlx died of BIOS corruption too :(. Is this a common problem with that revision?
Also, anyone that has had to RMA a board to Asus know how long it took them to send it back?

EDIT: Cheapherk (sp) you can only run a software RAID on the IDE channels which means big CPU utilization on disk access, you'd be better off with a RAID card or SATA adapters IMHO.
