The 'E' has a wifi port and 1 gigabit lan and 1 10/100 lan port. I don't think the wifi card comes w/ the board.

I recently got a computer back from someone that I had built a little over a year and a half ago and have been having some troubles fixing it. WinXP is missing a file, so I want to boot off the WinXP cd and repair the system, or worst case format and reinstall. The system is very bare bones, Asus A7N8x-deluxe, Athlon 2800+, 512MB Corsair RAM, Geforce 4 MX.

The problem I have is when I boot off any OS CD(winxp, win2k), the system hangs on "Windows is now inspecting your hardware configuration..."

I have swapped out: RAM, CD drives, video cards, PSU. I updated BIOS to 1008, cleared BIOS, tried every boot option I could think of in the BIOS, turned off all onboards hardware, unplugged the only HD in the system and even tried booting from WinXP floppies -- and I still have the hang up.

The only info I can find suggests turning off all caching in the BIOS, which I have tried.

Dumb question guys but I have never run Dual Channel chips before.

I have the single channel board with one 512 Meg chip in it now.

Can I put two dual channel 512 Meg chips in?

I don't expect them to run dual channel, just want the 1 gig and maybe later can use the chips in a dual channel board.

Thanks

Yes, you can. The A7N8X-X supports up to 3GB of ram.

Thanks for the reply, lloks like as long as it is regular DDR and not DDR2 should be OK.

Nice price Wars on DRAM going, less than $100 for a Gig so I'll crank this thing up.

Novafire: The XP's check for hardware changes when you try to reload or even repair the operating system. Part of that proprietary deal you accepted when you first signed on and registered it. Either some piece of hardware got changed or it sees a change that it deems big enough to keep you from making any OS changes or a reload. You may have to call Micro-sloth to get it re-registered; noting that it is a repair/reinstall and not an upgrade.

After building several P4 OC'd machines, I'm looking for advice on my first AMD OC experiment. On a plain A7N8X with 2x256MB Geil DDR 400 and an ATI 9600 pro, I've initially installed an old K7-850 Thunderbird (a 100 FSB proc) that I had lying around. I know its old and slow but I'm just playing and learning for now. At my default 8.5x multiplier, I can hit 125 FSB.

My question: With this odd CPU - memory pairing, if I unlock this proc, can I get more speed/memory bandwidth if I lower the multiplier and then further boost the FSB?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Yes! ;)

I don't see why the CPU shouldn't work on a 200FSB with a lower multiplier ,however if you look here, near the bottom you'll see that you can't go lower than x5 on a 200FSB which is near the upper limit of your CPU.
If your sure its ok at 1.06GHz then you should be fine at 5x200 :)

I have the -E Deluxe board with one 512MB stick on it. I'd like to turn this box into an audio workstation running 2 GB of ram. If I understand this board, I should just be able to buy another 512MB stick and a 1GB stick, then place the two 512s in ram slots 1 & 2 with the 1GB in slot 3. Is this correct? Is that the proper way to load the ram on this board. I realize I could also buy 2 1GB sticks and do it that way, but, as I said, I already have a 512 stick.

I don't think it really matters in your case. The manual doesn't say anything other than it will still be dual channel if you use all 3 slots. Just put the 1gb in the middle if you want.

Ok, another question:

I want to upgrade my cpu, as well as my ram. I have the revision 1.01 A7N8X-E D board and am currently running an XP2100 (266MHz FSB). Since, from what I understand, this board won't run at 400MHz FSB, would I see much benefit from getting one of the XP2800+ and higher CPUs? Maybe I don't fully understand the relationship between teh MB, CPU and ram. Which AMD CPU should I get? Which ram should I get? Is PC3200 fine? Should I go higher or will I not see much of a change?

I believe Nohr has the same board and same revision as yours. He has a Barton 2500+ a 2.2 200MHz FSB on it so you might want to PM him.

What do you do with your computer anyway? I have an A7N8X Deluxe with a 2100+ overclocked to 2.4GHz 200MHz FSB and it's a nice little speed bump. I don't really need it since all I do with this comp is surf the internet :p but it's there. You can probably just overclock your cpu. Honestly, upgrading a Socket A platform for modest speed gains isn't worth it anymore. My next upgrade would be Athlon 64, but my system now will last me a couple more years.

With the price of RAM these days, you can't go wrong with PC3200 if you do upgrade.

I believe for the dual channel to work properly the channels have to be balanced ,I believe biggestmuff has it right

thanks, guys. I went ahead and bought two 1Gig sticks of Crucial value ram for around $180. I'm at work right now and it's at home running through a Memtest.

I was, but didn't want to worry about the new RAM matching the old. I thought it'd be bettwer to just buy matching RAM to run. Now, I have an unused 512 stick of PC3200. I'll use it for an upcoming machine I'm going to build.

For anyone that may be interested, I installed a Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu CPU fan and a ZM-NB47J chipset cooler yesterday. They both fit on the board well together. The ZM-NB47J needs to be installed with the links flipped over. The heatsink will then need to be positioned so that the side with the two rows of shorter fins are under the CPU fan. I'm currently running the fanmate externally, through an open PCI slot in the case. The fan is quieter on it's loudest setting than my previous fan was; Mad Dog/Thermaltake.

I also installed an extra ZM-NB47J on an old Asus A7M266 that I'm using as a music server. The stock chipset fan was becoming very loud.

I have an extra I/O shield for a plain A7N8X board (not E or Dlx). If anyone could use it, send a me message with your address and I'll send it no charge. Just grateful for all the help I get here.

hi all I have recently flashed my bios Using ASUS Update to v 1013 on my A7N8X-E DELUXE. Guess what, now it wont boot into windows. It still sees the sata drive and gets to a B&W page that offers to boot into safe mode etc. All choices lead down the same path, it loads lots of divers etc from sata and then hangs before returning to the post stage and going throught the loop again. Any fixes or have Ig ot to load windows and all the rest again?
TIA robert
