now I'm not much of a baseball guru, but why didn't Smoltz pitch before Gagne? Everybody was building Gagne up and he was 31 for 31 with saves, so why wouldn't they have him close out the game?

probably since Smoltz is a veteran, Dusty wanted to reward him by letting him close the game

Because Smoltz could easily be considered better...He has 3 more saves, and he holds the NL record for most saves in a season.

Edit - Not to mention Smoltz's ERA is more than a run better than Gagne's.

Seven of the last eight World Series were won by the team with homefield advantage....I'm pretty sure it's not close to 50-50 in the last 35 years......

Mike Scioscia out managed Dusty Baker in the World Series and he just did it again in the All Star game....he wasn't worried about making friends by emptying his dugout early just so everyone got a chance to play. Baker had only 1 batter left once the 9th inning rolled along:)

I guess you could make an argument between Gagne and Smoltz, but Smoltz is just... Smoltz. Atlanta's only and one of baseball's greatest ever big game/postseason pitchers, awesome year last year, awesome year this year. To me it could have gone either way, smoltz setting up gagne or vice versa, but to me, if a tie in talent is determined, then the edge would go to Smoltz cuz he's Smoltz :). As a huge Braves fan though I'm sorry he didn't get a chance to pitch but also glad it wasn't him blowing the game. wtg gagne! heh

And now looking up the stats, I see that not only do Russ Ortiz and Dontrelle Willis have better numbers than Prior, but Woody Williams and Randy Wolf do too.

Of course my bitterness towards comments like "Prior should get the start" come from the fact that Dusty Baker took both Prior and Wood over Dontrelle Willis.

ok, ortiz, williams or Wolf should get teh start over Schmidt.

i just don't understand why Schmidt is starting.

but with R Johnson and Curt Schilling hurt, Maddux having his worst season, the traditional NL starters aren't available i guess.

It was just a reward for his performance last year with the Giants. Plus Baker was trying to give him a little love since his mother recently died. I belive it was fairly recent anyway.

Defenitely a good game this year though. Good to see the Mariners represent (or at least Ichiro) although I wish the fvcking fox geeks would quit pronouncing his name Itchyro. And yes, Garret Anderson was a straight up stud in this game. Home run derby champ, all star mvp, not too shabby :)

how about my main man Hanky B saving the day for the AL? He's easily one of the best young hitters in the game. Of course, knowing the Rangers, they will end up trading him for a 43-year old pitcher who will come to Arlington and post a 7.50 ERA. Garret Anderson, the least-talked about superstar in the history of baseball?

For some reason, Angels don't get much attention as the Dodgers do. Tim Salmon should have been an All Star few years back, he was consistent 290-30-100 guy but never really recognized. Jim Edmonds wasn't really talked about until he went to St. Louis.

I think superstar is going a little bit too far when describing Garret Anderson. Great hitter, extremeley underrated, but going by only numbers he doesn't match up to "superstar" status. Last couple of years he's had the RBI's (117, 123, 123) but his average hovers around .300 and he draws very few walks, thus scoring few runs. Anyways, it's pretty common knowledge that he's one of, if not the most, underrated players in baseball.

Woot for Hank Blaylock of the Rangers. Texiera should be just as good by next year. The Rangers will have an awesome infield of Blaylock, A-rod, Mike Young (who is hitting over .300 and is probably the top defensive 2B in the AL), and Texiera at first. Now if they could just develop some of that pitching they have been drafting the last few years, the Rangers could be a stout young team.

Garret Anderson deserves a heap of credit for the home run crown and the MVP. He makes the game look easy and he is a class guy. And I wish ESPN would fire the idiot Bobby Valentine, I cannot stand to see him cover any baseball much less the All-star game.
